My son just came back from school today. All he did today was watched the movie "Spy Kids 4, Yours,Mine & ours. Had 1 hour recesses. Anyone know They stop learning? They still have 3 weeks of school left.

SOLs are done, right? In the words of the great GWB "Mission Accomplished"

That's it - there is almost no teaching after SOL's. I think the elementary schools are already turning in final grades. What a waste of everyones time and money - not to mention FCPS is short changing the kids on their education!

Teachers are very, very busy this time of year.

Thank goodness they will have three days to clean out their classrooms.

Teachers suck! I wish they would give my kids another exam to prepare for before the end of the year! Maybe a project for my kids so they can put it off until the last minute and spend the entire night completing the dang thing!

Or maybe some more GT/AAP testing so my kids can get into Harvard!

The movies mentioned by the op do suck - at least pick something with a bit of historic/scientific/cultural relevance. Then make the kids write a 3-5 page paper connecting the movie to the SOLs!

The kids clean up the classrooms. The teachers are pretty much on easy street till school ends.

When I was a kid in the midwest our school year was over just before
Memorial Day. All my kids here in Fairfax did for the last two weeks of
school was goof off and go to ceremonies to hear about what a great year
it's been. I say let them out now and be done with it. They aren't learning
anything anyway.

"Spy Kids 4, Yours,Mine & ours"

Are teachers allowed to show movies like this in school? Not because of content but for copyright violations.

I remember back in my school days they'd drag out some educational films for our entertainment and just maybe we might learn something.

I seem to recall seeing a film about Prince Edward County Virginia shutting down it's public schools in refusal of a desegregation order?

Yes. It's fair use. Whether it's a good use of time/resources is another issue

Personally, I dont think they should play any non educational content in the schools. who the hell are they to decide what my child can and cant watch. While I havent seen 'Spy Kids', I do know that MOST of these childrens tales are laden with sexual innuendo and dirty jokes. Think Shrek

I never said I personally have a problem with said content. I have a problem with a government entity overstepping their role. I have a problem with paid civil servants not doing what they are contractually obligated to do the mere 150 days a year they work.

Most government entities have technology usage regulations to specifically prohibit the using publicly funded equipment for non-work related activities.

Not a complaint here, but the 18th and 19th are pretty much filled up with trainings and other meetings.

I am a teacher, and I pretty much haven't worked in the last ten years. I show the kids movies like TOTAL RECALL and HARRY AND THE HENDERSON'S starting in February and make them promise not to tell or I'll bring in THE NOTEBOOK instead.

If you dummies would vote on tax increases I could afford to show them BLUE RAYS.

Oak View????
We beat that school's ass at Tri-Corner Red Ball every single season. Is your kid the one I always humiliate by asking him how Spy Kids 4 is while my school shows us Directors cuts of Tarantino films?

Soft, Good luck with that!

Lady, get over it.

DURING SOLs it is useless to try and teach when more than half of your class is pulled out at all different times for testing. Repeat the lessons 3 times to catch every student or just wait until the majority of the class is PRESENT.

Remove that stick from your ass, wannabe tiger mom.

Teachers and students alike tune out once final exams are given. If there's nothing else to influence the grade, nobody's going to put forth any effort. If they gave out homework after final exams, you bet your ass there would be parents complaining about how their precious snowflake had to do work even though the tests were over.

Just be glad your kid did well enough in school that it could blow off a few class days. If your kid didn't do well enough by this point, then a couple extra assignments certainly weren't going to help.
