Why do many ghetto thugs love pitbulls or rots?

Was watching a documentary on urban crime and it seems the vast majority of hoods or barrios have pits running around.

A small group initially uses them for fighting, then of course the image builds to the point where every clown with an ego decides they'll suddenly a become a badass with one. Rots and some other breeds are also used to guard stash houses (Think Presas, Cane Corsos, etc.). Some people legitimately buy them for protection of themselves and their household, or they at least decide that if they have a pet they want it to be of the type that can protect them too.
