Our new traffic reality is congestion 24/7

WASHINGTON - Traffic congestion is no longer to confined to morning and afternoon rush hour, or even daylight hours thanks to overnight construction projects.

The projects, which are happening all over the region, can create traffic jams on some major roadways in the middle of the night.

"What you have now is congestion 24 hours a day, seven days a week because of this," AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesman John Townsend tells the Washington Examiner.

As bad as the nighttime traffic jams can be, officials tell the Examiner it would only be worse if they were trying to do the work during the day.

And as bad as it is now, officials say it will get worse during the summer -- when road work will be on some of the area's busiest roads -- like the Beltway, I-66, New York Avenue in D.C. and Rockville Pike in Maryland.

Construction of the Dulles Rail Project is just one of the projects that can slow traffic to a crawl at night. (WTOP File Photo)

I live right near Silver line construction. It in no way effects traffic 99.999% of the time. If you are gonna blame a project then blame HOT lanes which close down 495 ramps like theres no tomorrow every night at 10 pm not to mention the mess that continues to be Route 66 which I have no fricken idea why it has to be such a disaster all the time.

But it aint silver line outside of minor effects on Route 7 in Tysons itself and a few times they had to close down the ramp from 123 to 495, but that late at night all you have to do is go up to great falls instead (not an issue, and definitely not causing a back up).

It's not just from the construction, it's the sheer number of people moving here. For instance, ever since LoCo re-zoned a lot of farmland and began stuffing McMansions, townhouses, and apartments onto every single inch of previously large expanses of land, the traffic has gone through the roof. It used to be that once you got past the Dulles mall the traffic on Rte. 7 was light, but now it's back-to-back all the way through Leesburg.

I do a lot of driving after 9 pm from Springfield to Annandale and out to Chantilly and Centreville. Use to be traffic lightened up around 9:30 ish pm. Noticing in last year that traffic doesn't lighten up till 10:30pm or later. Out in Chantilly area around 11pm recently and was amazed at the amount of traffic. Sunday and Monday still light traffic but now count Tuesday and Wednesday as heavy traffic nights when they didn't use too be in recent memory.

Well the reason why it is so bad around Leesburg is due to the masochists who commute from WV and Frederick coming through. I've been out that way at 6-7 AM, a and there are a whole lot of Maryland tags on the road. We should put a toll up at Point of Rocks to pay for accommodating these MD leeches. Out of state plates only. Virginians get to pass through.
