School Question

My husband and I are new to the area and our kids slated to attend South Lakes next year. Some of our new neighbors have warned us to stay away. Is this school really that bad?

This can be true of any school in the county. Do you consider yourselves to be good parents who are actively involved with your kids and have open communication with them? If so, I don't think that you have anything to worry about. Have you visited South Lakes? If not, maybe it is worth spending an hour or two to see for yourselves.

What exactly did your neighbors tell you? There was a huge controversy involving South Lakes and some other schools a couple of years ago, but the Earth continues to spin and I have yet to hear that anarchy is the norm.

Yes Southlakes as well as Westfield. Any school with a direction in its name is bad.

Yes, South Lakes HS is as bad as advertised in most varsity level team sports.

Otherwise, my freshman has been happy there while some, but not all, of her Carson friends from last year have been less than thrilled with Oakton and Westfield. There are one or two people in the neighborhood that are still bitter about the redistricting and clinging to Oakton but most have moved on to SL without regret.

I'd suggest getting a broader sample of neighbor opinions before pupil placing out.

There are bad elements at ALL Fairfax County Public Schools. It is up to you as a student to rise above it, if you so choose.
