The funny thing is that Marion Barry is one of the only DC board members that is actually representative of the average DC citizen. Most black people in DC think exactly the same way he does.

into buying a liquor store in NW and I went with him to check it out.
It was owned by an elderly Jewish guy who'd been there for years and
wanted to retire. The inside of this store was like a fortress.
Bulletproof glass between the customers and the counter. Nothing within
reach, all liquor and everything else sealed off. Big, I mean big, Shepherd
in with the clerks. The dog stayed there at night. Alarm systems everywhere.
The doors in this place reminded me of an old prison. The owners books
showed he was making an excellent profit but my boss freaked out at all the
security and dangerous looks of the customers. What a workplace!

What I've always wondered is what do they do when it's time to go home? They're relatively safe behind the plexiglass, but how do they get to their car without getting shot? Or do most of them live upstairs. Even if they did, they'd have to come out of there sometime. And the jigs could be waiting for them.
