In terms of the spirit of the times, economy, music, fashion, attitudes? Were there less assholes around here or more? Was there a more optimistic or pessimistic mood in this area? Were people more adventurous and friendly back then or now? Thanks for your replies.

In my early 30s so growing up in the 90s conjures up:

Went to Tysons and Springfield mall a lot. Back then Springfield rivaled Tysons in visitors. Another Universe and Discovery store rocked

Traffic was still bad but 66 didn't have the all-day congestion it has now

Most of the kids nowadays are less wild and more driven than when I was growing up. I think kids back then had more fun to balance with school.

I think people were friendlier back then too. I had a blast in the 90s. Partied like crazy but somehow managed to also do decent in school.

Was NOVA in the 90's better than NOVA last few years?

In the 90's....I had a $15 an hour job but could easily rent a sub-$1000/month 1 bedroom apartment (even in Reston or Tysons if i looked hard enough!) and live close to work- no problem. My neighbors were all friendly and I knew everyone by first name and we all got together frequently to BBQ and chip in for a keg every so often. One time, we threw a rent party to help someone out with their rent since they lost their job. Life was GRAND.

Now? You can't even find a studio for <$1000 ANYWHERE in fairfax which is not in the middle of the hood or near Hagel Circle. And the $15 an hour job I had back then only pays $9/hour now. My current neighbors, no one on my floor speaks ANY english, all are immigrants. I try to be nice and say hi- but they look at me funny and keep walking. NO neighborly people around anymore.

Lets see, back in the 90's:

1. Lower cost of living
2. Smaller population
3. Less crime
4. Lower taxes
5. Better driving conditions (less traffic, fewer stoplights, etc.)
6. More manageable immigrant numbers
7. Fewer d-bag transients
8. Fewer liberals
9. More real restaurants, fewer chains

Yes. And the 80's were better than the 90's and the 70's were better than the 80's.

Of course, many of the amenities we now have didn't exist...no Starbucks on every corner. Somehow I found life to be better in many ways and at the same time feel like some of the growth has been beneficial. But with the growth has come the surge in population which has brought more crowding, higher taxes, more construction, higher population density, more traffic and, more than anything else, an overall "me first, F-you" attitude from the influx of this new population that makes me sick.

This area still has some good things going for it, mainly economically, but the 90's it was a fairly fun place to be. The economy was humming even better back then, you could still get across the county in thirty, forty minutes at the most, and it was a lot more relaxed atmosphere. Sadly, those days are gone.

Other than the earthquake, that's about the best thing to happen to NOVA other than the civil war in the past 150 years or so.

Was driving home from Franconia tonight about 10:30 p.m. use to be traffic lightened up around 9 pm. Noticing now that traffic is still heavy till 11 pm . We are now an urban environment. sucks imo


hell of a lot more people and yet I find the area far more boring and folks unfriendly as hell seems like folks nowadays are so self involved and act like there shit smells like roses


Rents too High, you should look into locating to Raleigh. Still friendly folks around in them parts and can find affordable and decent housing outside of town and they seem to be building roads to handle the growth sort of. at least better than around here
