Arlington house razing spurs neighborhood ghost talk

ARLINGTON, Va. - Neighbors who live near the Overlee Community Pool just off Lee Highway in Arlington are very familiar with a 14-year-old girl named Margaret -- despite the fact that she died in 1913.

"Margaret was the little girl who, in the 1800s, lived up here at the house -- she passed away unexpectedly," says Jeff Schreiner, construction manager in charge of renovations at the pool.

"I haven't seen her, but I keep my eyes open for her," he says.

A Victorian-era house that once served as the pool's clubhouse was demolished in February, Schreiner says. As workers were preparing to raze the home, The Examiner reports one construction worker reportedly saw Margaret peering from a window.

After encountering the girl inside the house, the worker reportedly asked to be transferred to another project.

"She's watching over the project," says Schreiner, who acknowledges being a believer.

Neighbors have embraced Margaret's presence over the years, knitting her into community stories. Some warned construction crews they might run into her.

A member of the pool club tells The Examiner Margaret is welcome to live in the new clubhouse.

Ghost of girl appears, worker flees, 'good karma' remains

As far as ghost stories go, the one they tell at Arlington's Overlee Community Pool is spine-tingling: A young girl in Victorian garb, appearing in the window of a 100-year-old house that sat on the property. Patrons sometimes hear odd bumps and noises or wander into inexplicable cold patches there.

Now, as construction crews are renovating the pool and razing the Victorian-era Febrey house, the so-called Ghost of Overlee was enough to send one construction worker home.

Just over a month ago, a group of construction workers was preparing to demolish the house, which served as the pool's clubhouse for several years. Suddenly, one of them spotted something -- a little girl peering from a window, he told his co-workers.

The man went inside to find the girl sitting silently on the basement stairs. He turned around, then turned back -- but the girl had disappeared.

"He was really shook up," said site supervisor Jeff Schreiner, who hasn't seen the girl himself but says he "believes in apparitions" nonetheless. "He came in the next day and asked the supervisor if he could be relocated to a different project."

For the residents of the Overlee neighborhood, these stories are nothing new, and by all accounts, they take their neighborhood ghost very seriously. Ask, and they'll tell you the ghost girl's name (Margaret Febrey), her age (she died at 14 in 1913) and her connection to the property (her family once lived in the house).

Margaret -- rather, Margaret's ghost -- is a perennial character in the stories local children tell and, some residents speculate, a good-luck charm for the Overlee swim team. The area's civic association in a recent newsletter reminded residents that it's "important to be aware of all aspects of our neighborhood -- even the supernatural elements."

Members of the Overlee pool's board of directors didn't waste any time when construction crews arrived to tear down the Febrey house. They provided contractors with emails detailing the house's history and warning that some workers might spot Margaret.

"We're always cognizant of the fact that she was there. A big deal has been made out of it," said Harry Braswell, the owner of the contracting company at Overlee. "We got an email that had pictures of her and her birth date and the family. They said, 'Watch out -- you may see her.' "

Besides the single encounter with the ghost by the now-gone demolition worker, no other sightings have been reported. But some are concerned that renovations at the pool may have disturbed the Febrey ghost, and pool board members have visited her grave several times to assure her she's "very welcome to come and live in our new house," said Mary Bohan, a member of the board.

"I don't disbelieve in her," she said, laughing. "And I don't think anyone has ever felt anything sinister. We really hope that we're sending good karma to the ghost."

Bunny man is 1970's vintage. Margaret died in 1913.

And Clifton and the Overlook Pool are about 20 miles apart. In 1913, that trip was probably a good two hours or more.

North Arlington ghost: Construction worker quits after Margaret Febrey sighting
By Kendis GibsonMarch 19, 2012 - 07:15 pm

An eerie encounter recently brought work at a North Arlington construction site to a complete stop.

Two months ago, an old Victorian house sat on the site, but as crews began demolishing the property to build a new club house, one of the workers spotted a young girl inside of the building.

The girl is thought to be Margaret Febrey, who was laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery almost 100 years ago.

"He said he saw this little girl in the window ... and he went in and couldn't find her, and on his way out he saw her on the steps and turned around and didn't see her," said Jeff Schreiner, construction supervisor.

The encounter was too much for the construction worker. He immediately packed his stuff and walked off the job permanently.

Fourteen-year-old Febrey had lived in the Victorian house being demolished before her death in 1913.

The sighting spooked workers so much, they stopped construction on the 99th anniversary of her death in January.

Over the years, the old house even turned skeptics into believers.

"It's certainly possible. The house has been there a long time," said North Arlington resident Liza Marshall.

The sighting of Margaret by a construction worker remains the only occurrence.

Workers Report Ghost Sightings at Overlee
by Katie Pyzyk | 8,036 views | March 16, 2012 at 2:30 pm
http://www.arlnow.com/2012/03/16/workers-report-ghost-sightings-at-overlee/

(Updated at 3:15 p.m.) Something eerie is going on at the Overlee property, and it has nothing to do with logistics of the pool renovation project. Workers report seeing an extra person lingering at the construction site — a ghost.

The news isn’t entirely surprising to those who know the history of Overlee. The Victorian clubhouse, which was recently torn down, had been built in the 1890s and came to be known as the Febrey-Kincheloe House. Ernest Febrey built the house and later it was inhabited by the Kincheloe family. After her husband’s death, Mrs. Kincheloe turned the house into Crestwood Sanitarium, a home for elderly Washington dignitaries.

But the ghost isn’t believed to be one of the sanitarium inhabitants. Mike Maleski, who is on the Overlee Board of Directors, said that for decades people have reported seeing a girl in Victorian clothing. Researchers think the girl is Margaret Febrey who died in January 1913, and was said to be 14 years old. A family member reported that the Febrey family stopped using the house after Margaret’s death.

Over the years, some managers for the property had lived in the upper levels of the house and encountered the ghost. Managers and contractors have reported seeing a girl in odd clothing near the stairs of the basement. In January, some crew members demolishing the house admitted to talking to a girl who fit the description, and they believe it was the Febrey ghost.

The Febrey ghost isn’t the only unusual activity that’s been reported on the property.

“There were other ghost stories as well,” Maleski said. “Music and strange noises and things. I don’t know if that’s been idenfitied as one person. Most people believe it’s from the time when it was a sanitarium.”

The Febrey ghost appears to be friendly and has chatted with numerous people on the property throughout the years, we’re told. She also has been known to enjoy playing with children at the Overlee pool.

Nobody has reported any additional sightings since January.

Music and humming in the middle of the night, Lights on that I turned off, a basketball that rolled out of a room and took a 90 degree turn and stopped at the doorway of a room I was in. My dog laying next to a door that went to the clubhouse wagging her tail, sniffing the bottom of the door and whining (a door that we never took her down by the way). On several occasions I heard whispering (bestway to describe it) coming over our baby monitor. Like I said alot might be able to be explained but when I heard stories of others who have lived in the house over the years there are som similarities. I have been sitting on these stories until recently. I have only told a couple of others.

That house in Arlington was not the residence of Margaret Amelia Fabrey at the time of her death.

Her death notice, Washington Post, Jan. 16, 1913:
On Wednesday, January 15, 1913, at 12:30 p.m., Margaret A., only child of Ernest J. and Grace W. Febrey.

Funeral from parents’ residence, 3547 Thirteenth street northwest, Friday, January 17 at 1 p.m. Interment at Oakwood Cemetery, Falls Church, Va.

I suppose she could have decided to haunt her OLD house instead of her NEW one.

Overlee Clubhouse is gone
By Michael McMorrow
Thursday, February 16, 2012
http://www.connectionnewspapers.com/news/2012/feb/16/overlee-clubhouse-gone/

Generations of swimmers in the Northern Virginia Swim League know the Overlee Clubhouse on Lee Highway, Arlington. Thousands of youngsters literally competed in its shadow. Built in the 1880s for the Febrey family, and long the home of the Kincheloe clan, it was a sanatorium until purchased by the Overlee Community Association over 50 years ago. Preservationists lament the loss of the historic structure. Old-timers are left with memories. The house simply wore out. Plans to save it made no economic sense. A modern replacement overlooking a new pool will be completed before the summer season.

This was the place which was supposed to have been torn down…how can the ghost hang around if the house was torn down? I thought that “haunting” ceases if the object of the “haunting” is removed.

It depends on what type of ghost it is.

There are apparitions, which are the emotional echoes of a person who has died, kind of like tape recordings, only the media they're recorded on is the physical surroundings instead of magnetic tape. Apparitions are triggered when sensitive people enter the area.

The other, rarer type of ghost is a spirit, which is the actual anima or soul of a person that has not moved on or dispersed following death. While spirits frequent places they knew in life, they are not tied to any given place like apparitions are.

Are you sure that the Febrey House in Arlington wasn't the grandparent's home?

In other news, In the 9/10/1912 Washington Post, the house @ 3547 13th ST NW in DC was for rent:

"Two rooms with private bath; gentleman; with our without board"

Well you seem like you know about this stuff. Why is Margaret's ghost still here supposedly? Were there any unusual circumstances surrounding her death such as a murder or a suicide? I know she died young but considering it was 1913, dying young was probably not all that uncommon.

For the record I don't believe in ghosts but this seems kind of interesting.

Ghost of girl appears, worker flees, 'good karma' remains

It actually sucks that we keep tearing down classic homes around here in favor of cookie cutter dwellings that have no character.

Shame the Overlee structure couldn't be preserved.

I find it interesting that earlier this year, the home in which this child's funeral was held 99 years ago, 3547 Thirteenth St NW, Washington, DC, was completely gutted and placed on the market.

I predict that a year after this house has been sold, the new owners will get a very unpleasant visit from a not-so-friendly ghost.
