New Resident: Why are there so many police?
Posted by: New to Fairfax ()
Date: March 29, 2012 08:36PM

I just moved to Fairfax from Iowa. Why are there so many police in the area? I have been here just a couple weeks and gotten pulled over twice. Not to mention I see at least three police cars when driving around locally. Seems like they got their county on lock down. Anything to know about Fairfax County Law Enforcement?

What part of the county are you in? Welcome to Hell from Iowa by the way :).

Sometimes it just depends, 400 square miles, a million plus residents, some more interesting than others. We do have a heavy police and fire department presence, some due to proximity to D.C., some due to sheer population, and also crime in certain areas. Its a mix of factors. From cornfields to asphalt welcome!

Post 9/11 over-response led to millions of wasted dollars in our "Sticker Checkers," as they're affectionately known around here.

KeeP the myriad of stickers in your car up to date. These over-paid meter maids love to stand in our omnipresent traffic jams and check stickers.

So much misinformation, as usual, from wacky posters.

If you were pulled over twice in just a couple of weeks I would look at your own driving behavior rather than too many Police. I've lived here since 1982 and have been pulled over once. Here are the facts:

FCPD has only 1359 sworn police officers (supported by an additional 345 non-sworn part-time or full-time employees). So 1359 cops provide 24 x 7 Police protection and law enforcement and criminal investigation services to almost 1.1 million residents. That is one sworn officer for every 809 residents. Compared to most localities that is a very low ratio of police officers to citizens. Yet we have one of the lowest rates of serious crime for any large urban jurisdiction of our size.

The total cost of the Police Department including sworn and non-sworn salaries, benefits, uniforms, equipment, vehicles, and helicopters is $210 million. Divided by total residents, we each pay about $194 per year for very good Police protection.

There are actually a low number of officers, and they are able to provide a very good service with a resulting very low crime experience for citizens. Of course a lot of that success is due to the education and relative affluence of most Fairfax residents who are mostly law abiding anyway.

Like the poster above said the cops arent really an issue if you arent doing anything wrong.

The best advice I would say is obey the traffic laws around here. Unlike more rural areas you wont get away with a whole lot on the roads here especially on days speed traps are set up.

As long as you arent doing anything criminal your biggest interaction with the police will be a traffic ticket and even that isnt an issue you you stay close to the speed limit and dont run red lights ect.

Theres only one inspection sticker for the windshield and that only has to be updated once a year so its really not hard to keep current. Youll also find that the majority of people in this area that hate the police are ones that got caught by them.

With a population of over 1 million, Fairfax has one of the lowest crime rates of similar jurisdictions in the country, maybe there is a correlation with the number of cops, if it really bothers you I understand Detroit is very nice this time of year, you wont see many cops there as plenty were laid off.

no, Iowa is right. I have lived in other places, even places with high crime and FC feels like a police state, they are ever present and it makes living here feel like oppression. There have been many threads on how it sucks to live here and before the Better Business Bureau posters start in, I am trying to GET OUT. This is just another reason it does not feel inviting or comfortable or pleasant or welcoming-all things that mark a healthy community. The atmosphere feels like big brother is just looking for a reason to F with you here.

I've been living and driving in the county for 30 + years and have never been pulled over. You and a few others here must be a really shitty divers (or driving a POS that screams stop me). We really dont need any more, so perhaps staying in Iowa would be a better choice.

Ever listen to Fairfax County police radio? There is constant action, morning noon and night.

It has occured to me that perhaps more officers are needed.

The calls are mostly domestic problems, drivers calling the cops on one another, and "suspicious persons".

Cops are no fun to deal with, so I do everything I can to avoid contact. Driving reasonably, auto paperwork up to date , lights functional.

All shenanigans are conducted in private.

Actually , you can hardly blame the cops for having attitudes. 80% of the calls I hear on the radio involve citizens acting up, mostly domestic problems. Sometimes, the cops get called to a home of a woman that got smacked, and both the husband and wife turn on the cops. Plus everybody lies to the police. No wonder they're cynical and have itchy trigger fingers.

The way people act around here, thank God there are "so many police".

But the OP has my condolences. Compared to Iowa, the horrific shithole known as Fairfax County must seems like absoloute hell.

Drive no more than 9 MPH over the limit, keep your tags and stickers up-to-date, and make sure your lights all work and you will have no problems from my experience. The only bad experience that I had was a drunk driving stop where I was a passenger, the driver wasn't drunk, and the police treated us like we were suspected of running a drug cartel.

There are at least 21 law enforcement agencies in this area running around in their mostly black Crown Vics or Suburbans with tinted windows, almost all of them can write you a ticket. But don't worry about the Metro transit cops unless you are on Metro property or within 150ft of a Metrobus stop.

The FCPD are not experienced at fighting, combatting, and preventing REAL CRIME. So they must justify their existence by policing traffic. That's right, the FCPD is really a revenue-generating, traffic conduit for the county government. You will find them all over the county with their crewcuts, Ray-bans, and speed gun at the ready. They need to realize this is 2012 and a metro area with over 1 million people and spend more time policing and less time sitting in cars at intersections with the speed gun pointed at oncoming traffic.

Do they run radar? Of course. We, and I mean long term residents kind of know where they usually are. Yet, when you think about it, think about ten years ago. Just ten years. How often were they running radar? A lot more then than they are now. Yup, they are busy, and while its okay to be for or against what they are doing, by all means, they do not have the time to be running radar like they used to.

Yeah cuz they pull you over for a loud exhaust instead. How about pulling over every dump truck in FFX and give them the same ticket.

I've accepted the fact that as soon as the lights go on, you loose all of your rights as a tax paying citizen of this "free" country.

They are "enforcing the law." Do they have discretion? Yes. Are all Fairfax Police great? Nope. However, I've found them to be far more professional and honest compared to jurisdictions such as Arlington or D.C. I am also thankful for them. While I obviously do not count on them for home defense, they are my backup on that.

Is their power checked? Yes, through the courts and I believe a citizen oversight committee, that's still in the works. I'd take FFX police over nothing, and over a lot of police departments in the U.S. Plus, go overseas. See what you think of "those apples" :)

Enforcing the law is one thing, but cops know they can get away with a lot, so they do.

So when i get pulled over, the cops searchs my car without concent, and finds nothing. I'm left with a fucked up interior, and some bullshit tickets. I would have flimed it, but the cops thinks cell phones contain guns. Would not allow it.

Knowles v. Iowa --- Doesn't matter because cops will write tickets after they search your car. Fucked up!

No theres not. Theres never more that 4 or 5 with overlapping jurisdiction in an area and really its never more than 2 or 3. State police done patrol anywhere but 66 in NOVA, Sheriffs rarely write tickets, and the Secret Service/FBI ect arent writing speeding tickets.

Uh, yes there are. And I know of 2 that you don't even know about. You don't know shit about where the State Police patrol, BTW. Tick the other LEOs off on the road and see if they can't pull you over and cite you for something. That includes FBI and SS.

Right the phantom top secret forces that patrol the area that only you know about. Nice attempt at trolling. You dont know anything and are just trying to sound like a hot shot.

The FBI won't but it IS a federal crime on GW Parkway and inside Bull Run Battlefield to name a few places that the Park Police Will write you. And if you have to go to court (DWI) ?? Yep, Federal District Court.

So now search's can be lawful based on a smell. Something you could NEVER prove in court. How convenient for law enforcement. You ever smell a dead skunk on the side of the road, you ever go into the woods. A bunch of things smell like weed.

I know for a fact not every cop in FCPS knows what weed smells like. I know first hand and I’ve heard stories from others.

If a cop wants to search your car, he can just say he smells weed. If he doesn't find anything, oh well, goes apon his day and you have a fucked up car. If he does, then it didn't matter if he smelled anything anyways.

I'm just saying, don't believe your 4th amendment right applies on the road. They can do whatever they want.

So many Police haters on here> If your car was searched without consent or a lawful reason, contact the Police Supervisor an a investigation will be done.

Kewl All I can say is stop breaking the law you are always on here complaining that you were stopped for no reason etc etc. I will help buy you a map if you want to leave the County so you can make sure you are moving outside of the County

So many on here say the Police only writing speeding ticket and inspections. Well guest they do a good job with crime no one is on here saying they were the victim of a crime. So I say good Job FCPD.

And that still doesnt change the fact that unless you are involved in some major criminal activity or terrorist play the 3 letter agencies/Marshalls ect could care less about you. If you were on their radar it wouldnt matter where you lived either.

The other poster who knows about the secret traffic enforcement police that none of us know about is trying to make it seem like the FBI/Marshalls/CIA/Secret Service are running speed traps

No lie...one day Fairfax pulled me over 3x in the same car in one afternoon....and all I was doing was driving to a shop on the other side of the county to get my rejection sticker repairs done- a friend of mine at the shop was gonna help me with the labor costs, I was unemployed and out of a job at the time.

I had gotten the sticker the day before (Thursday) and it was on a Friday at the end of the month when was on my way to the shop and pulled. It wasn't even serious stuff- a bad right back tire (I had my brand new spare on instead) and headlights- one was out, one needed adjustment (it was daytime) and my e-brake cable was a little rusty? OMG SO URGENT I"M GONNA DIE IF I DONT FIX THIS TODAY!

All 3 wrote me a ticket for the sticker even though it was VALID. I could see if I failed for bad shocks or all my tires were bald in the rain or no muffler on my car but damn!

They're just like Arlington with the quotas.

You only get pulled over in Fairfax when you're driving like an asshole. Either get your shit together or move to PG County and stay there.

Lived in FFxCo since 1968 and have received only one ticket for speeding in 1986. I've owned all types of vehicles: trucks, sedans, '60-70s hot-rods, Corvette, Mustang, vans, etc. To avoid tickets you have to stay within resonable legal limits -- maintain your vehicles, don't speed excessively, don't put a bunch of after-market junk on them like overly loud mufflers, don't weave in and out of traffic or drive wrecklessly, don't over-tint the windows, etc. If your vehicle screams "look at me" you're going to be looked at -- particularly by the police.

I appreciate the FFxCo police and the neighborhood involvement that they participate in throughout the year. Our crime statistics are low compared to similar-sized jurisdictions. If you don't like FFxCo, move on over to Prince George's in Maryland and see if you like it better. I'd rather see police vehicles routinely than rarely. If you see the police a lot, it also means the criminals see them, too.

Actually it does a little. If it's really fresh and really potent, it can smell like a skunk, or a skunk can smell like weed. Whatever.

OP is a 16yo white rapper from an Iowa farm, just moved to DC to become a gansta. Trying to build his cred by making improper lane changes and mouthing off to cops.

To per quote Bleh, a resident of these parts, the snakes on the CUE bus and other places around Fairfax, are out of control. Also, to another ungrateful person, there are showers at a center that help those whom are helpless, that are less than Marriott/aka Fairfax County standards.

MikeA,

So if you were the cop, would you assume you have a dead skunk in the car, or weed. Your link says it smells "similar", not identical.

As for this statement - "I know for a fact not every cop in FCPS knows what weed smells like. I know first hand and I’ve heard stories from others."

In the academy they do a controlled burn of marijuana for each and every officer when they are trained. They most certainly do, ALL, know what marijuana smells like. So maybe you should get your "facts" straight before YOU say "dumb shit".

I would suspect the cops dont really want to do all the paperwork that goes with arresting you for pot but if you get smart mouthed then they will make the time.

Then why do cops search your car when it doesn't smell like weed?

Because it does smell like weed it just doesnt smell like it to you. Much like the smoker who never thinks they smell like smoke

Our cops need real crime to deal with, because currently they just spend most of your tax dollars on busting up underage parties. (except the gang taskforce, they deal with real shit)

I actually don't smoke weed. No one else has either. Even if I did smoke i wouldn't be driving around doing it. Not sure why it even matters, my original point was a cop can just say he smells it, and it's probable cause, even if he doesn't. And there is no way you can prove it was a unlawful search.

Interesting concept. So, in essence, you are saying you would like to live in a community with more crime?

Also, please provide examples and citations of all the "fake crime" they deal with. Thanks!

Interesting how no one sees that we enjoy such a low crime rate for such a large population largely because they are good at enforcing all the small things, or "fake crime", before it develops into larger problems, presumably "real crime."

Yeah because a loud exhaust is going to turn into a international drug smuggling operation.

I still find it funny how so many people on here keep saying the Police have nothing to do. I am sure they would thank you the complement of them doing a good job and keeping so called real crime out of the County. Also poster are say they got a ticket for _____. Not they were not doing the crime just that the Police should not be stopping them for those crimes.

OK City bomber Timothy McVeigh captured after being stopped for expired tags......, shoots your theory right in the foot. Then again we could have had 5 homicides yesterday like PG County did , should we complain some more ?
