why is that Madison high school and Marshall High School, has high Graduation rate, higher sol scroes, HIGH SATS scores compare to Mount Vernon, Falls Church High School? Why can't we transfer all those teacher from Madison high School to Falls Church and Marshall to MVHS to see if they will make a difference? is not fair that a poor kid will get an poor education at a poor school

We don't need no puto teachers over here. They can stay wherever the fuck they are right now. What we need is more role models to show us how to handle business with real cojones.

We don't have a chance playing your pussy ass school game. So all you pinche cabrones can keep your schools and fag teachers. We ain't asking for shit. We're taking it.

Salvatrucha fuerte por siempre.

Poor scores have nothing to do with the quality of the teachers. Students across the county are not willing to work hard in school and take responsibility for their own education. These students need to work hard and take their education into their own hands instead of expecting to absorb the material by sitting in a classroom, staring off into space.

Isn't mount vernon where all the kids who get expelled froms cvill, chantilly, and whs go? I don't know why people keep complaining about that place if its more or less a juvenile detention facility.

Most kids that go the Madison and Marshall have two parents in their homes and they value their education. Not so true for those other schools. Parents make the difference, not teachers. Wake up!

It is teachers that make the difference, but teachers arent just found in the school. They are found at home, at pre-school, in play groups and almost anywhere else that those with greater knowledge interact with children. A two parent home where the kid is essentially ignored is not by itself much more likely to produce a good student than a single parent home. What usually makes two parent homes better is that it increases the chances that there will be at least one parent in the house who is engaging the child in active learning.

Theres a lot of truth to that. Teachers certainly can make a difference but I would add that you could have the best school with the best teachers and if the kid was raised not to prioritize education it would make little difference as the odds would still be stacked against the kid. A lot of it is just how the kid was raised. If they take education seriously even if they arent the smartest theyll work hard and get the necessary help. If they and their family could care less theres not really much you can do unless the kid decides they want to learn one day

It may not be the teachers' ability to teach. These kids come from families that have had a high quality nutriion for decades. The Grandparents, great grandparents, and parents all ate healthy. The child bearing woman were healthy and deilvered babies.
Young children ate vegtables and avoided eating Oodles of Noodles or the other 'junk food' noodles that parents feed their kids now a days.

Many of the parents read nursery rhymes to their children each day; read stories to the kids; set limits on video games & tv.
These parents probably can afford to put their kids in child enrichment activies and are able to take their kids on vacations that combined learning and fun.

Education of parents/grandparents and good eating habits (along with income) help children succeed in school.

Poverty is sad; FCPS doesn't teacher wealthy kids better. The kids from middle income homes tend to eat nutrional meals.

Do these poor kids get three meals a day?
Are they provided fresh fruit?
Five servings of veggies / fruit?
Do they get enough iron in their diet?

Have they had the proper diet since neonatal? Kids that aren't fed properly may not be ready to learn.

I think that you need to learn about Poverty and the impact on the brain.
There are so many studies that link mal nutrition or poor nutrion to weakend cortex functioning!

We have every color and stripe in the US of A, a black President, and the "race card" just doesn't disappear. It only hurts those who are of that persuasion, the race card and affirmative action are a joke. More harm than good, that is for sure.

tea leaves--- What am I missing here?

Living in poverty sucks. Many of us have been there. There was poverty 30 years ago.

Poverty isn't a protected class.

I don't understand the term racist and how it's being used on this thread.

Look at the subject line. I didn't put it there. That is the race card, plain and simple.

The City of Falls Church sits between your two FCPS but is number one in the HS ratings.

Parents who care and are concerned about their own community can better prepare their kids for life. It is a fact. Not a myth.

FCPS did a disservice to the Clifton ES community. Smaller schools do better all around. How come so many parents believed Jack Dale? He is a failure. Who will now will clean up his mess? I guess it will be paid for with higher taxes for all in Fairfax.

Good luck!

Parenting is hard, hard work. People who have their kids too young, don't have stable jobs, have marital problems or no spouse to help, etc. are at a huge disadvantage (which puts the kids at a huge disadvantage). The emotional and psychological security that the above factors give to a kid cannot be replicated by the school. The family does not have to be wealthy or take mega vacations. There are many things that a parent can do with a child that do not cost money and are fun and bond them together (and bond them to their community). The family does need to stay together or at least share real custodial parenting and give enough food and security so that the child does not have to worry about that kind of thing (and can focus on studying for the future). The parent needs to protect the child from adult burdens and let the child be a child.

When I was young we played outside with all the kids in my neighborhood. This was in 1986. My parents did not push sports or cram an instrument down my throat. I played one sport and we did not have travel teams.

No SOL's or worries about my SAT scores. No prep for anything. I got into a good college.

Today you feel like a bad parent if you don't push for greatness on all levels. Sad, you can only be a kid once.

1986 was 25 years ago. Unfortunately your kid cannot get into a good college if nobody worries about SAT scores or SOL's or grades, etc. Lots of us would like 1986 to return, but that doesn't seem to be in the cards. We now have to compete on a global basis and it's not turning out to be a lot of fun. The past is gone.

The last few points are great (from all posts)

Parents that have kids so young when they don't have stable jobs. a 19 yr old male is supproting his wife & child. Does he pay rent/ or pay health insurance? His paycheck only will cover one!!!!!

the stress level placed on our kids today is unreal!

I agree, the times have changed greatly. This once slightly suburban area has become an urban jungle, with sprawl and more crawl, and of course the Feds getting involved in the education business(SOL's and more) haven't helped Fairfax and other school districts.

And then of course, the increased housing costs with dwindling or stagnant income, and a whole host of other challenges, have not made it as easy, although it never was, as it was back in the day.

Yes, and 1.3B Chinese also weren't waking up every day trying to beat us in the global economy. Push your kids, or they'll get left behind. Kids will always be kids - pushing them to excel does not harm them. We've got enough lazy Gen X'ers and Millenials - don't add to the problem.

You bring up a good point here, but add an asterik next to it. In China, Japan, and in other Asian countries, only the top students remain. The rest of the less intelligent, and I can laugh about it I would be knocked out of the first round, are sent to other training instead of education. That culling of the herd, is why their test results are better than ours, also the perception.

Look at the top universities in the world. The reason folks from China and elsewhere come to study here, is proof that the education system is working quite well.

We're slipping. We used to brain drain the world a LOT more than we do now. A lot of Asian kids go to Germany and France now.

Fact of the matter is that being rich will always have benefits. You can't start everyone on third base you can only make sure they get an at bat. If you're rich, you can get some psychologist to diagnose your kid as learning disabled before their SATs so they get 7 hours instead of 3.5 hours and then diagnose them recovered afterwards. If you're rich, you can afford tutors and college consultants. If you really have money then you can talk to the folks at the college development office and just buy your kid a seat in just about any school.

You can't make the playing field flat but you gotta give these poor kids a fighting chance.

Hell! Rich school districts have poor teachers. Racism does not only occur in poor school districts. It's alive and living everywhere in Fairfax County. My kids experienced racism from their teachers and counselors. The school they attended was not in a deprived area or deemed a poor school. I think good and poor teachers are everywhere, kids just need an involved parent or parents.
