This happens every day! It's usually a coolant hose breaking and spraying antifreeze onto an hot exhaust manifold. The buses are getting old and and they haven't bought any new ones in years. Those rubber hoses just rot out after about ten years.
Talk about smoke, I was going down the road one day and looked in the mirror and it looked like James Bond turned on the smoke screen in his Aston-Martin! What happened was the turbo housing cracked and antifreeze was being pumped straight into the exhaust.
Buses do actually catch on fire occasionally, but it's pretty rare.
