Apparently they were evicted.

Right next to Jammin' Java?

I was just over there Monday. The store didn't have any signs up about this at all. Did they know it was coming? Looked like they were still selling merchandise on Monday.

Weird.

Evicted?

That's a shame, as this was one of the few places (forget Lowes and Home Depot) that had a reasonable collection of metric/standard nuts and bolts you could buy individually...

Crap. It was nice to shop at a real hardware store.

Having said that, I only went once or twice, and I kinda wonder how they did enough volume to pay the high local rents.

I know a small independent hardware store has to charge more for it's items but this store(Stalcup) seemed over the top too me in what they charged.
Wasn't Stalcup a long time store in the McLean area before locating to Vienna?

shop McLean Hardware or better yet Fisher's Hardware in Springfield which I still think is best around the area for finding stuff for old shit in your house that you can't find no more

Agreed on McLean and Fisher's. A bit further afield is the hardware store in Manassas off of Liberia...long drive for a 7mm washer, though.

Stalcup had some sort of earlier presence in the area...landscaping? Another hardware store? I dunno...

Have you been to Fischer's lately? The place has gone seriously down hill since it was sold. They still have most of the knowledgeable clerks but restocking has gone to shit. The last few times I've been there, all I found was an empty hook where what I needed should have been.

The new owners of Fischer's needs to get a clue. There's a reason people bypass the big boxes and come there---and it ain't to look at an empty hook and be told they can get it for you next week!

Crud. I always hate to see an independent business go under. Guess they should have stuck to hardware and kept the shelves stocked with parts rather than filling the front of the store up with Amish grown vegetables and baked goods. FOCUS!

It was one of the few places I could go to find simple repair pieces without parking a mile from the door and another mile once inside a store. Yet, I don't think that my 50cent at-a-time purchases were helping them out much.

I also really hate to see local hardware stores close. Hope they can reopen.

Fans of old hardware stores should check out Nichols in Purcellville. In business since 1914. It is an amazing place.

10 posts about old fashioned hardware stores and not one mention of Browns in Falls Church? One of the longest continually operated stores in VA. Since 1886 or something. Still family owned. I ALWAYS go there first before the big boxes. Nice to be able to chat with someone and get good advice...

Ayers a couple of miles away in Westover is another good one.

Yeah I've been pretending not to notice but the store does seem to getting thinner in stock since the place was sold couple years ago.
Lot of the old staff still there but if it ain't in stock no more....

My memory is that Stalcup either was, or had another location on Old Dominion Drive, a separate building located in the shopping center across from Vinson Hall.

Of course, these independent stores need to charge more, which has to be offset by a knowledgable staff and good service. Being a Vienna resident, I never found the staff at Stalcup's in Vienna as particularly friendly, and grudgingly helpful. I usually left the place feeling that they were doing me a favor.Brusque.

Has anybody checked out the new hardware store that opened in Fairfax City? I haven't gotten around to checking it out yet---Twins Ace Hardware, I believe it's called. I need a Plan B if Fischer's gets much worse.

Owned by two brothers (twins?) that both worked at Strosnider's over in Maryland.

I didn't know they were sold and I was wondering what the fuck happened to the store. The shelves are so bare I feel like I'm back in 1986 Vladivostok.

I asked a clerk where the Sterno was and he actually asked, "What's Sterno?" In a motherfucking mom and pop hardware store. I think that the old-timer clerk that he then solicited for help wanted to stab him in the eye with an AIDS-tainted pickle fork when he asked. I did, too.

So it wasn't just my ugly face. They treated other customers like crap. I still think their prices were higher than say McLean hardware coupled with acting like a-holes made me avoid the joint after a while.

the ACE hardware in Fairfax city is fairly decent. Is bordering on being to big and doesn't have the feel of old time hardware stores but i hate home depot

Sadly, Fisher's in Springfield sounds like its days are numbered if they can't restock anymore

its a long drive for me out to the one in Manassas on Liberia Ave. but it is amongst the last of a breed

Ditto...I always tried to stop by Stalcup before going to a big box hardware store, but there was always this sense that I wasn't particularly wanted in the store, and I always got almost resentful service, which was odd.

I ended up just giving them a pass.

The Liberia Ave hardware store is good...on occasion I've driven out from Vienna just to buy something there...

I stopped in twice for things. The first time I got leg humped by the dog they had loose there. Neither time did the cashier (the old guy) greet nor say "thanks" upon checkout. Just complete silence towards me. Saw this coming as I heard from our own retail landlord that Stalcup hadn't been paying rent for the longest time.

That was part of the charm of the place. We sometimes got blaze paint to mark our trails there. After paying our tab the old guy would look at us and give us a disgusted sneer. It was the only place I could still find strike anywhere matches.

The old guy reminds me of Clint Eastwoods role in Gran Torino.

they gotta find a place so they can have a "going out of business" or a "Lost my lease" type of sale. Like every other store has every 6 months...

I was in Stalcups about two weeks ago. prices for the onsey, twosey type stuff wasn't bad. but the shop was a cluttered mess. always seemed dark and dingy, like a dive bar.

It seemed like they kept trying to cram more crap on the shelves than what would fit. Of course Lowes and HD do that on a regular basis, but they have 120,000 sqft of space.

I drive through Mclean on my home from work, being I live in Vienna, Mclean Hardware is my first stop, Stalcup ismy second big box third...

Hardware stores could learn from Mclean. Bright and clean, Staff always waiting up front to help you as you come in.

Fischer's is closing. Was in there the other day - shelves empty! They are selling out existing stock (at high prices) and then closing down for "renovation." Doubt they will reopen.

Liberia drive may be worth the drive for less aggravation. Too many traffic lights and crowds to get into Home Depot; let alone the useless staff and despite their size, the seslction of items really isnt that good!

The old man was an a-hole to me the only time I was ever in there. They got what they deserved. If you are rude to your customers, you won't be in business long. FU Stalcups.

Obama announced today that the closing of Stalcup's and Fischer's are both Bush's fault. The media reported the closings as more evidence that Obama's policies are good for America.

Went to Fischer's of beautiful Springfield on Saturday. Thought I better buy

some innards for my 30+ year old toilets just in case Fischer's really is

closing. Fischer's had been the only place in area I could find parts for my

old water closets but alas they did not have the parts no more. The gentleman

who served me I recalled from many previous visits and in a roundabout way I

tried to get him to say that Fischer's was closing and no they really weren't

ever going to restock those items again. But alas who wouldn't say.

On my way out I took a look around. Very few aisles were well stock and lots

and lots of empty shelving. Had never seen the place so empty.

Wekk don't forget Sheets Wholesale down Mill street from where Stalcups used to be. Run by surving son David who will give a good price if he takes a liking to you. David seems like a real character and is but is a real part of northern Virginia grew up just a block away from our historic home on Leesberg pike. David could be seen endlessly driving his subaran tractor up and down the streets in the Loyns subdivision. You can get a nut or a sack of nails there from David who hand you a bag and proclaim a price free of using a scale or looking things up. When he dose look things up he sees prices going back seven or eight years.

Good write-up on the closing, what is know now.

I went several times, but their prices compared to the big chain stores were hard to stomach.
