FCPS - Everyone gets a Valentine
Posted by: get real ()
Date: January 30, 2012 10:03AM

It feels like we just took down the Traditions Tree, celebrating the dozen or so 'Winter Holidays', and now Valentine's Day is upon us.

Got a note home last week from my kids teacher that no student could bring in Valentines unless they brought one for every kid in the class. Perhaps the anti-social bully or the budding basket case might learn something in understanding that no one likes them. Nope - everyone gets a Valentine - from the nicest, most helpful kid in the class to the flaming a-hole headed to prison someday. What's next - mandatory randomly assigned prom dates, with a proper mix of same sex pairings?

It has always been this way. I don't see the harm.

It's been like this for a couple of decades and you are choosing now to bitch?

Common sense: good rule.

If this is above elementary school, it is ridiculous.

However, having been a teacher of small children, I approve this rule. Would you want to see the child who struggles to make friends be left out? The kid might just be very shy. And, FYI, the bullies would get the most Valentines--because, in the elementary school, unfortunately, the kids usually want the bully's approval. It might surprise some of you to know that the worst bullies are the cute little girls who do "everything right". They are just careful to be sure that no one is looking when they ostracize others. It's easy to identify and address the issues of the big kid who hits others--it's the subtle bullies who do the most damage.

Just eliminate it from schools and we'll be one step closer to ending this annoying Hallmark holiday.

When my son was in preschool, a girl in his class went around telling each kid why or why not they were invited to her birthday party.

There are policies out there that try to curtail kids from saying or doing dumb or cruel things.

BTW, my son was invited to her party, so, at least he made the B-List. Maybe even the A-List.

they sell them at walmart for like $2.00 if you don't have 2 dollars ask the school if they can buy them for you

My mother told me that it was rude to talk about a party in front of others who were not invited. It's also basic consideration of others.

We'd all be better off if parents would teach this to their kids=--and not let the teacher have to deal with it at school. I suspect that the little girl who told everyone why they were or were not invited to her birthday party did the teacher no favors. Yes, we all have to learn to deal with disappointment, but we don't have to have it rubbed in our faces in front of others. When this happens at school, it is often the teacher who has to "pick up the pieces"--not the parent. It is disruptive to the classroom.

If you don't care about the other kids--please consider the teacher who has to deal with it.

Agree with Ban It All above. I have two kids in elementary school and we celebrate most holidays with fun family traditions. My kids are well adjusted and I guess they feel special, I don't know, I've never thought of asking them. Certainly they don't care whether they get valentines/candy from all in their class or not. This watered down we are all winners constant celebratory buzz in FCPS. Ridiculous -- a hassle for teachers and distracts about what's really important in school. What a waste of time/effort/money.

It's been like this for 20-25 years, easy. I had the same rule back in the 80's. But I always gave the best ones to the girls.

Also, I agree that kids shouldnt talk about their parties in front of others simply because most families can't handle inviting a whole class's worth of kids. even if the child is the most popular kid and wants to invite everyone.

No doubt your kids could handle not getting valentines from some of the kids, but I suspect they would feel different if they didn't get ones from any. If it is a waste of time then lets just do away with valentines exchanges in elementary school entirely. What educational purpose do they serve?

Seems to me that's a standard elementary 1st 2nd grade rule. They say it but kids don't follow it and teachers really don't check.

Jesus, if this irks you, wait until you find out they don't make black people sit at the back of the bus anymore...

After first grade Vday should be done away with. It is a complete waste of time.

We have that same rule in our class. So my daughter dutifully brought in one of those little cardboard rectangles with a sweet tart attached for every child, and six larger personalized cards with a small bag of M&Ms for her best friends of the month.

oh enough with this touchy feely crap if a kid doesn't get a Valentine it's because they are fat, ugly, or not attractive! If they see this then they will change it. It's survival of the fittest and it brings out winners and leaders!

My kids 5th grade teacher sent home the same note, yet allows some of the more socially awkward kids to be completely ostracized in class.

When my kids were in elementary school, the teacher sent home a note saying if you want to exchange Valentines, then you must bring one for each kid in the class. It really annoyed my kids to write out ones for the kids they didn't like. It always turned out that the kids that nobody liked never brought in cards for the rest of the class. They went home with cards and candy....in the upper grades 4th, 5th, and 6th, the teacher never checked. After 4th grade, they stopped giving cards to the kids they didn't like and never got in trouble.

I agree.

On the other hand, I can imagine the harm of feeling excluded as a child.
