I am not judging an entire unit based on a few bad people. Well, OK, it is part of the equation. I am also judging them based on the reactions the management of the department has towards those bad apples. I am certain the vast majority of officers in the county would not behave in a reprehensible manner. However, when those that do behave deplorably get minimal sanctions, the department as a whole needs to be called into question. They are not above the law. They work for me and you to enforce our laws fairly - even if it applies to them. The police recieve numerous praises in accolades, maybe not in this forum, but in the media and other forums they do. As a taxpayer, I am pissed when these officers break the law and nothing happens. I don't want to open a can of worms here, but downtown there is a memorial for law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Don't get me wrong, that is a deserved tribute to these fallen men and women, but where is the tribute to those who have been the victims of police brutality and murder/manslaughter? Maybe I am setting a higher standard, but shouldn't we all be setting a higher standard for them? After all, we are taught to respect and comply with law enforcement. They have a tremendous amount of power. Couple that power with a sidearm, I want the most honorable and upstanding people in those positions. When they break the law, their brothers and sisters should condemn them and shun them rather than rally around them.
I work weekends too sometimes, I have to. I don't get paid overtime, but work needs to be done. I will grant you this, police are on duty 24/7, but it is not the same ones. They work in shifts and most, if not all still get two days off a week. Many people love working through the weekend and getting their days off during the normal work week. Plus, they pay more for certain shifts. Many officers request them.
Don't worry, I didn't want to jip your precious police department. I already deducted all sources of income the county recieves from police fines, fees, etc. The $145,506,307 figure is the Net Cost to the County.
So, lets take a look at those qualifications:
