People who ride the bus

Why is it there are so many people that rely on public transportation in this area of ours? I see people standing at bus stops all the time waiting for buses, why do these people not own a car? It's not as if we live in NYC where it doesn't make sense to have a car in certain areas of the city, this is suburbia for christ's sake. How do you people survive without a car around here?

Hell, nowadays you can buy a beater for $500 that will last for years. I would shoot myself if I had to rely on a bus to get around.

They are poor. Also, they smell bad.

Illegals and the poor make up a good chunk of the bus riders. Some are people who work in DC who are riding to the metrorail.

I am a driver. You should be ashamed of yourselves with your superior attitudes. Just because someone is poor ir chooses the bus doesn't make any difference in your lives! You are the types of people that would just pass by someone in need on the side of the road. You discust me!

How many homeless people do you let come into your home during cold winter nights?

Most people SHOULD NOT own cars. It's only in America is this the case. If public transportation wasn't so shitty in this country, we wouldn't have to hand out licenses to everyone that asks for one.
This is why there are so many people with licenses that don't know how to drive - American public transportation is a joke.

I didn't start this thread. Whenever I go to DC or some parts of MD I take the metrorail.

I'd take the bus now and then to work, but it's not worth it. I used the tool on Metro's website to try to find out what I would need to do. In the morning, I'd have to walk a little over half a mile (on a busy road without a sidewalk) to get to the office. On the way back home, it would take an estimated two hours to get home.

I'll keep my car.

I use Metro as little as possible. Seeing the way they handle service interruptions because of suicides, weather, etc., makes me think they don't have any sort of disaster plan. I feel like a sitting duck the few times I have to ride metro.

I use the bus every morning because I don't have parking at my building. I would love to drive but also don't want to pay $12/day for parking!

Some people take the bus to the train to the city or beyond.

Some people take the bus because it's a hell of a lot cheaper than paying for parking where they work.

Some people take the bus because there is NO parking available where they work.

Some people take the bus because their household can only afford one vehicle and the primary earner of the house takes it to work, leaving the others to ride the bus.

Some people take the bus because they are afraid to drive.

Some people take the bus because it's easy.

Some people take the bus because they've spent all extra income on an outrageously priced house here in lovely Fairfax County and can't afford a car.

Some people take the bus because they can't do anything else.

yup. I take the metro every day. I position myself near the exits within the car and remain aware of forward momentum (e.g. cranium never "behind" metal pole). I carry a headlamp, small crowbar, SW radio and a few other things. Another concern are the dilapidated escalators and their people-moving effectiveness (or lack thereof) during mass egress.
