99.1, WNEW, are you listening yet?

I tuned into the new news station the other day and it was not good. I understand they are still figuing things out, but it seemed they have a long way to go. They have weather every four minutes and traffic on the one's. When do you talk about news stories? I'll check back with them in a couple of weeks.

i thought El ZOl was one of the best performing radio stations in the market

Did their demo move back to south of the border or something?

Not enough emphasis on Maryland traffic or Father Hurley Blvd. for my tastes. I love going 2 mph on 495 in Virginia while hearing about what is going on in Frederick MD.

99.1 is called WHFS and they play music like Depeche Mode and the Cure.

It's pretty bad. They don't seem to have their shit together and, yes, they give weather way too often. I imagine it will get better with time, but I really don't see a need for another news/talker in this market.

I thought that 103.5 was enough when you want to hear the lastest traffice, news and weather. How many more stations do we need lit this?

I decided to do this twice since once was not enough.

I could have sworn I heard Lisa Baden on there this morning say "Starting with Virginia," then start reporting on 270... She then reported on just about every 495 interchange in MD before she quickly said something like "Oh yeah, traffic on 66. Nothing out of the ordinary in DC"...

It's nice to have her back. I've been too spoiled by WTOP's traffic folks and their actual in depth reporting of traffic throughout the area.

Interesting how WTOP didn't buy her out of her Metro Traffic deal but this shithole did. The folks at WTOP must not have had a high opinion of her traffic reporting prowess.

How is it every traffic reporter in the area ignores the fact 66 actually continues on into DC after the Beltway? Not one of those people ever tells you about a problem for that stretch of road, why is that?

I actually hear more about 66 in the afternoon and it's generally like this:

"66 is slow from Glebe to Syacamore and then through 495/Vienna and points west through Centreville and Manassas". Vague.

I didn't think it was possible to make a WTOP light.

How about some real stories and reporting. Seems like they are only concentrating on advertising content. Makes sense because radio becomes less relevant every day so you might as well cash in.

I'll stick with 88.5 NPR thank you.

This has all the markings of ad based revenue, with little substance. I do not see how long term, although they do have a few ex WTOP folks, survives in this market, as there are already plenty of these channels.

The quick 10 second Headline news approach sucks, and its just cheesy. Their long advertisement breaks, their personalities are lame, just cookie cutter news at its worst. I give it 3-5 months max. Bring back HFS!!!

A lot goes on in this world.

WTOP teases the news on how to save on postage. Many commercials later, they described how forever stamps work.

How many of their listeners send more than three letters a month?

Hard hitting news there. How can every day be a slow news day?

Also, what's up with that reporter they have on there once in a while that sounds like he is crying while delivering the news? WTF?

I think you are asking about Mark Knoller:

http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-18564_162-524942.html

I believe he sounds like he is crying due to a bought of throat cancer a few years back, it really altered his voice. Tough thing to happen to you when you are primarily a radio guy.

I listened for about 10 minutes yesterday afternoon. It was bush league. Absolutely sub-college radio quality. The announcer started by saying it was 6 o'clock when it was actually 7, and then there was an awkward live feed from the scene of a Metro track failure where the onsite guy kept cutting in and out. Then there was a lot of banter that never went anywhere between the hosts. They could greatly improve things by hiring that "Boom goes the dynamite" guy from Youtube.

Is Mark Knoller married? If so, how does his wife let him leave the house looking like that?? Dude, lose the floppy hair and shaggy beard. Good God, man! Have some pride in your appearance!

That picture has to be about 6-7 years old......the hair is more floppy, beard more scraggly and he is much heavier now.

I stumbled on this station and liked the "History of Rock and Roll" documentary they were running as a filler. I'd rather listen to that on an endless loop (at least it was interspersed with music) than yet another news radio station.

You've been living under a rock, haven't you?

WHFS was Ninja-Transferred to WLZL in January 2005. It was quite odd to be listening to alternative then suddenly latin that day.

WHFS's format was brought back on 105.7 in Baltimore. I really lost track of them after we moved across the country, but I hear the call letters are now used by another station.

WLZL El Zol was moved from 99.1 to 107.9 (former religious). They simulcasted El Zol from Dec 1 - Dec 12th at which point 99.1 ceased Latin music and picked up the WNEW letters. They used some filler - like that History of Rock and Roll thing until they hit their Jan 22nd all-news launch.

I really can't see much usefulness for WNEW. Weather here, traffic there, newstalk? I don't know - I don't "listen" to the news cycle through the day as entertainment. After I hear what I want, I'd flip channels, turn on my ipod, audiobook.

Their news isn't all that good, but the afternoon traffic reports are detailed and to the point without all that babbling. I think Bob on WTOP spends too much time talking and saying useless things like "traffic on 395/95 runs uneventful, all lanes open" & "people shouldn't be crossing into the HOV because it dangerous and illegal and won't help you much, blah blah" vs. "395/95 is slowing from Duke to King and then from the beltway to 123", "66 is slow from beltway to Nutley street and then to 50, no accidents to report on either stretch", etc.

I just hate the idea of several news station when this market is lacking in good radio station. I guess there is always iPod and satellite radio.

Bob confuses the hell out of me sometimes. You get a lot of "A wreck blocking the left lane east of the northbound lanes close to the exit for the airports thats south of the bush that blows in the breeze.Responders will be coming so please check your mirrors." And honestly it sounds like the man is still going thru puberty.

I was really hoping this would have been more like 1010WINS out of NYC, but it is the same thing as WTOP. the fact they hired a few WTOP reporters to read news makes it more confusing because now I am not sure which station I am listening to.

Months later, its nothing but snippets from larger channels, and nothing much about D.C. at all. Amateur, college radio, with a national brand packaging, little in the actual product. TOP still has the advantage, even though its far from perfect.

I have to say, I had high hopes for 99.1 when I first discovered it; but as much fun as it is to criticize WTOP, it's the Ed Murrow of radio stations when you compare it with WNEW.
