I'm quitting the Junkies
Posted by: Bret ()
Date: January 23, 2012 01:08PM

As you probably know my little brother, Derek Oliverio, died from smoke inhalation in a house fire about 4 months ago. He was the most driven, confident, bull-headed, and hard working person I have ever known. At 24, he single-handedly started Sup Dogs Bar and Grill in Greenville, NC (home of East Carolina University). When he passed away at 27, it was one of the most popular/successful restaurants at the University and in the entire city. In fact, the weeks leading up to his death he was meeting with attorneys, real estate agents, etc. drafting up plans to open up new locations in other cities. It really is unreal what he was able to accomplish in such a short time.

After months of thinking, I have decided to leave the radio business and put all of my energy into our family business with the purpose of carrying on Derek's legacy. My goal is to make Sup Dogs as big as Derek envisioned. This is something that I want to do not only for Derek, but for my family and myself. In two weeks, my wife and I will be moving to Greenville to learn EVERYTHING about the restaurant business with the hopes of expansion in the future. I know this is a personal risk and won't come easy, but I believe with a ton of hard work and support from family and friends, that is something we can accomplish.

Working for WJFK has been a dream job since I started with the Junkies part-time in 1999. I grew up listening to the station and can remember driving slowly by the Fairfax studio hoping to get a glimpse of the DJ's through the square window. Working for such a cool radio station and radio show really has been the highlight of my life. I have loved every single day at WJFK and The Fan.

I just want to say a few words about CK and The Junkies since I have worked with these guys since I was 18. CK's passion for the radio station and CBS Radio as a whole is remarkable and something I have always looked up to. He does the job of 6 people (probably more) and makes it look easy. Our station and company are incredibly LUCKY to have someone so intelligent and devoted. He is also a very good person and has been totally supportive of me personally and professionally.

Eric, Cakes, JP, Jason are like family and have provided me a career which I have loved. I have literally laughed out loud every single day at work since 1999. Not many people can say that. It's the BEST show on the radio- not even close. On a personal level, they have been incredibly kind, generous, and loyal to me over the last 12+ years. I consider them like big brothers. I am very fortunate to have been so close to all four and their amazing families. I will truly miss spending everyday with these guys.

I could go on and on, but I will stop now. Thank you to everyone for your support- I will miss every single one of you. My last day will be February 3.

I had high hopes for the RIP Derek Oliverio thread.

I thought it would equal the majesty of the Timmy/Rusty Hall threads and more recently the Carolos Hernandez thread.

But alas it was not to be, and it fizzed out after a meager run of only a couple of pages. Sad.

I'm assuming this was up on the Junkies website and someone cut and pasted it as a joke, given how much we love the Junkies around here and how pissed off Derek's family was about the shit that was said about him on FFXU at the time of his passing.

This guy was an idiot. He fell into a job a the right time and rode the wave on the backs of those other idiots. I doubt the hot dog stand will have and "sundress sillies" parties or "Emeril contests". He'll run that business into the ground in under 2 years.

But the restaurant biz is a tough one, just ask Timmy how many restaurants he'll give credit to (and rightly so.)

Only successful restaurateur I've ever met was Osama, and we all know how that ended up.

Taking off one day to learn as much as you can about the restaraunt business isn't for everyone. The majority of restaraunts fail, the overwhelming majority of them fail. How does sitting around recording bits like "Bet on Bret" make someone ready to take over a hot dog empire?

If it really is a popular college spot, it has potential to be a good business for a while. As long as the freshman follow the seniors there every year, and you aren't terrible, you should have a consistent flow of business.

Expanding to other universities might not work so well though, as they usually have their own established spots. It is a tough shell to crack.

Is it like a place to get cheap eats after a night of drinking or something? We had a hot dog stand guy near the bars where I went to school, the guy made a killing. $2 dogs to a bunch of hungry drunk kids sounded like a bargain. If it is actually supposed to be a proper restaurant, it might be more difficult to expand.

Greenville? Isn't that East Carolina? Do they have enough year round, local traffic there? Sure, making bucks off of drunk college kids is great during the school year, but what about when they leave? College towns are notorious for tanking businesses because there isn't enough traffic for 12 months a year.

Looks like a college boozing spot. Open until 2:30 AM during the week, 3 AM on weekends.

A dog and fries is $5.50, so there is nice profit to be made there. The hot dog angle is a good one because it "looks" cheap, even though a topped hot dog and basket of fries costs about $1.50 to make.

Usually restaurant owners are going through divorices and are poor because most of them are scummy and can't keep thier dick in thier pants around the young, nubile, female waitstaff.

I'm not normally one to "give a fuck" about all the various "RIP" threads on FFXU. People are dumb for starting them and they deserve what they get.

I feel differently about this one though. The guy just lost his younger Brother and now he's leaving the job and friends that he's known and loved for years in order to try and keep his Brother's restaurant open. I give him props for that. That's a lot of loss and heartbreak to take in such a short period of time.

MOST of the "RIP" threads are along the lines of "Grieve for my Homie 'cause he got shot selling crack.", or some equally retarded line of thought.

This guy didn't ask for anyone to feel sorry for his Brother. He just posted a goodbye and expressed a love for the area and a sorrow about having to leave it. I think the dogs don't necessarily need to be "sic'ed" on this thread. Just tell the guy "goodbye" and "best of luck". That's all he was saying.

Personally I think it's a smart move to get out of radio and particularly working with the Junkies and go do something else. It sounds like a pretty solid business as it is, and if it fails it fails, but that's better than hanging onto this one gig until it just disappears one day.

if the hot dog business doesn't work out he probably could get a job at one of the many classic rock/oldies radio stations... they still exist down in them parts unlike the D.C. area

wonder if something happened over at the new CBS Radio headquarters in lanham. noticed wjfk is completely out of 10800 main street. i too liked looking thru the windows back in the ron and fez/don and mike days watching them whirl their radio magic
anyways all the furniture is gone and noticed even the old CBS radio sign on the outside of building is gone

I quit the Junkies over a year ago. How many times can you hear something be "silly" or "felted". They revel in the fact they never prepare for guests and rarely talk sports. When they "The Junkies" they talked more sports and were told to talk less, now on "The Fan" they talk less sports. They hit their demographic, of which I am squarely in the middle of, but I can't take their BS anymore, time to grow up and move on.

I went to Velocity five a few years ago to watch a WJFK sponsored UFC PPV event. Big O and Dukes were supposed to be there but instead it was EB and JP Flaim. EB was friendly and JP was peanut head, but I was talking to and being friendly with a blond chick he was also talking to. Turns out she is a "friend" of his. He got jealous when she was talking to me, told this girl "Does he look like Brad Pitt?". AS if to say why was she being friendly to me. No doubt he was cheating on his ugly wife with her. I'd be surprised if he wasn't.

EB-Married to a homely chinese woman, making fun of BDK when BDK has been with more women in a year than that sorry sack has had in his life. Also, is a pervert who likes asking inappropriate questions. I laughed when he said he's never uncomortable around women. Guy looks like the grim reaper. His window commercials with his wife and the latest one with Flaim's wife are so embarrassing, just a neurotic coward. Doesn't like watching violent movies and yet is a republican.

Lurch-One of the sorriest individuals ever to grace any radio station. Free plugs, free stuff and constant complaining. Cries everytime BDK comes on but BDK is at least 100 times more interesting. Is also a yuppie coward who will shill for anyone and becomes friendly with anyone who is of benefit to him, like Rom. Truly a tall, pale, gonnorhea faced disgrace of a man. Very boring. Crossed his legs on the Junkies only appearance on ESPN classics. Another sorry excuse of a man.

JP Flaim-Married to, or going to be married to, a fitness model/money-grubbing whroe who is looking at the zeroes in his bank account and the free plugs she gets everytime he's on the radio and pimps her, her website, blah, blah, blah.
A little shrimp of a man who is very neurotic, putting up pictures of himself and the whore in question in their snuggies along with other very corny, pathetic and embarrassing pictures with no clue as to how bad it makes him come off. Don't think he cares as his pandering people to buy his book shows he has no shame. I give him and his future "wife"/stripper less than 2 years. Hopefully she gets a nice cut from the jackass, his dumb puerco rican brain probably won't register to sign a pre-nup. For a lawyer he's still a dumb scumbag.

Cakes-Possibly the sorriest looking human being to ever walk on two legs. White trash of the highest order. How this ugly motherfer graduated college is anybodies guess. Wants to own a gun, probably that low-iq redneck in him trying to come out. His annoying wife is just as white trash as he is. Likes wearing sports jerseys all day and thinks it's a good look. Despite running marathons is fat and still a sight for sore eyes. Somewhat funny on the microphone but not somebody any decent person would want to be in the company of. Fits right in with the 3 other soft yuppie maggots, even though he's more redneck than yuppie.

EB's Mother-dumb bible worshipping cunt, annoying as hell. Small brain and neurotic disposition inhereited by her son.

EB's wife-Ugly cunt. Probably EB's one and only girlfriend. Annoying as hell, voice is grating. A 3 at best.

Bret-Big thighed moron. Only likes blondes when brunettes are very attractive. Also only eats Chicken, just an idiot who's right at home with the other 4 pieces of garbage.

Rom-Don't know why he hangs around these losers, has more going for him than these idiots put together. Yet he is very pathetic as well, how sad.

Just a sorry group.

The whore doesn't let him sleep at night. She's used to being pumped and dumped. Being with one man isn't something she's used to. That should be his excuse. That or he's a puerco rican piece of garbage.

Fire JP Lame. Hire Mr. Matthew Cahill as Exec. Producer. Bring in Oscar Santana to replace JP. Oscar can leave O'Meara. I'm sure Spewak is ready to fill his time with some references to 50s sitcoms.

Worst show ever? JP Flaim with Rob Spewak.

Oscar Santana is a bolivian indian scumbag who thinks he's white. Bolivians are the lowet form of human life, from south america, and second only to salvadorans and mexicans in their worhtlessness. Guy is another whore monger who dated some dirty cunt who was a junkette. Adds nothing to any show. Hedge hogged hair dirty indian, like a cinnamon oreo, brown on the outside, trying to be white on the inside. Oh and his mother's a dirty indian whore.

That would be horrible on so many levels. Chad's ego could not stand for being the fourth man on the totem pole.

JP kills segments. Anytime I've listened, the other 3 might get rolling on something funny and then JP chimes in and the bit immediately dies. He is also never the catalyst for a bit. They should just shut his mic off if they insist on keeping him around.

He approaches everything half-assed, blows it for everyone else, yet somehow miraculously ends up benefiting in some way (Junkette Jesse Example - Is now tagging the shit out of a "bikini pro" while the others can't leave their fucking houses at night to do live shows with "sillies")

I don't know if he's benefiting by banging a "bikini pro" since he had to basically kick his wife and kids to the curb in order to get into her cooch. He's now working for half of his paycheck for the next decade at least. She's hot now, but eventually, those looks will fade and he'll be left with some dumb cunt whose looks no longer outweigh the vast emptiness between her ears.

Is there a photo where EB doesn't look like a cancer patient?

l.jpgLiver and Skin Relation

Most people know that alcohol can do the most damage to the liver, but it is a lesser known fact that alcohol's effect on the liver actually causes a sallow appearance in the face when the liver is stressed out and can't perform its duties properly. Just as alcohol can encourage scar tissue or "bad collagen" growth in the liver, it can also have this effect on the skin.

JP is the one who never shows up on time.

EB is the one who was bitching because his car finish was being ruined by the construction on I-66 at 4:30 am. When the others pointed out he could just go down 50, he bitched that it would extend his commute. His solution? Trying to figure out how he could get money out of DOT to pay for his ruined car finish.

The junkies are just a pack of self-entitled d-bags.

Despite no discernible talent, they get paid large sums of money to BS about sports on the radio for 4 hours a day and hang out in Atlantic City.

Their ratings have really gone in the crapper since they signed their new contract. Their show ratings are in LFF/The Edge territory.

I guess what little effort they put into the show before the new contract is officially gone under the new agreement. Another great move, CBS.

All of radio is in plunder mode.

Am/fm has been dead for almost ten years now. The execs and talent know that. Why should they try to fix the titanic when only the stern (no pun intended) is still above water.

They are all amassing, and holding, as much cash as possible for when their advertisers finally force them to jump ship and swim for it.

Audio will live, radio will die and te consumer will be better for it.

Agree. I had to change my battery six months ago, and didn't bother putting 106.7 on there. In fact, I just have 103.5 for traffic and the station my XM radio transmits to.

I don't see why some station doesn't just start playing podcasts,,,

Should be a cheap alternative to "real" talent,,,pretty sure most podcasters would take damn near any deal

Make the station a variety show of what's out there

Use the podcast format to prospect for talent and re-invent the industry

The only problem would be that a lot of these good podcasts don't want to mess with the BS involved with being on the radio. Most don't bother (or want to) bleep out stuff like BOAD does (for some strange reason). Nor would they they want to deal with some Pig Virus like suit telling them how to improve the show.

Satellite has done this a little bit. I know Joe Rogan's podcast is on the Opie and Anthony station on the weekend. I think the Smodcast used to be (or still is) on the O&A network too. I don't see guys like that cleaning it up so CBS radio can use their stuff. I mean Corolla has apparently turned regular radio down a couple times for the reasons above.

Personally though, I think any old podcast from some unknown guy would be better than hack morning zoo DJs or "sports talk" featuring a marble-mouthed ex-athlete. It would probably be cheaper than paying whatever they pay Lavar or Mike Wise, let alone all four Junkies.

I hardly ever listen to these tards. I was reminded why last week when listening to EB talk incessantly about how he posted a dr's appt on the wrong electronic calender. He whined for five minutes while his colleagues begged him to move on to something people might really care about. I got creeped out by his attempt to keep this conversation going.

I'm not sure if there was a formal announcement, but it sounds like Valdez has moved into the head producer spot as he's on air quite a bit. Sucks for Drab.

I'm pretty sure if Adam Carolla could get another morning radio gig paying the $1.2 million he was getting before, he would drop his podcast and deal with Pig Virus. The podcast seems to be a hell of a lot of work without the kind of reward he was getting from a paid radio gig. While I'm sure he is making decent money from the podcast, it probably compare to what he was making at CBS radio.

Some sponsors (i.e.-NetFlix) will not provide sponsorship to a show which uses foul language. It was easier to to the free show clean and the paid show with the curse words.

I can't believe I listened to another 30 minutes or so this morning. e.b. looks like death warmed over cause he expends so much energy during a show babbling on and on and on and on. He probably thinks if I don't move this sucker along the show will careen into the road bank. Problem for me is that shtick is so tiresome and boring. same old same all the time.

I guess the yutes like how they change topics mpoment to moment but when they end up saying the same things again and again well i find it ponderous

got to get off my lazy ass and change the station. problem with that is D.C. radio sucks so bad these days not really anything worth listening too

To get my sports fix now i'll listen to Czab on a horrible AM signal over the Junks and the caliber of product is night and day.

Its clear that Czab has a pure passion for sports and radio unlike the Junks who hav neither. Thos guys barely want to put in 4 hours, Czab does two shows and still mixes in enough pop culture to keep things fresh.

Why CBS Radio doesnt realize those 4 ingrates have zero appreciation for a job that 100's of other guys would do for less money and more passion is beyond me.

The Junks are like an old casino in Vegas that been around for to long. At one time it was trendy, fresh, new and the place to be. Nothing has been changed or updated since the opening, everything is falling apart and the people who go there are without a clue. The only thing that can fix it is a razing.

He's got his own morning show on 570 (Yahoo Sports Radio network show), and he's on the Sports Reporters show in afternoon drive time on 980.

You can't compare the Czab to the Junkies. The Junkies are really a bunch of played out douche bags who marginally discuss sports. When they run out of material, they start making up words.

Czab, on the other hand, is a multi-faceted sports commentator. He can easily move from discussing the French Open to The Masters to the NFL to college hoops. He is thoroughly versed on a wide range of topics and can hold intelligent and informed discussions with a variety of guests or callers.

The Junkies have Lurch, who knows college hoops and some football. The other idiots chime in occasionally with semi-retarded analysis of UFC, which really isn't a real professional sport. When that's played it, it's "Rick, Donk, Silly, Pwning" time.

Bunch of fucktarded asshats.

Comparing them is an oxymoron

The Junks and Czab are approximately the same ages, target the same demograpic and work in the same radio niche. Yet as WTL points out there really is no comparison because Czab out classes the Junks on so many levels.

Glad we can agree something, guy!

I think that book show precisely what's wrong with JP. He is the most self centered douchbag I have ever heard! He is completely in love with himself - he always drops into conversations random self flattering comments to make him look good. He never admits he's wrong despite overwhelming evidence and common sense to the contrary.

Now he writes a book about his journey to become a boxer! A BOXER????? Are you kidding me? He did a PR stunt by steppping into the ring. Sure he went to a boxing trainer for a few months - get in line with hundreds of soccer Moms who do the same thing every week, Are they writing books about their quest to become a boxer?? No, because they know they are not boxers! JP is so into himself that he believed the PR Stunt made him a boxer. And now he has the audacity to think that anyone would be interested enough to read it.

Let's remember that the PR stunt bout was against a loser who had only a handfulof fights himself and lost most of them. He was a loser and a bad fighter yet he completely embarassed JP in every way in the ring. He beat his ass and knocked him out seconds into the fight and made it painfully obvious to everyone but JP -- that he was not a boxer nor would he ever be. He was a joke, he was a dude who went to a soccer mom boxing camp and it that's exactly what he looked like in the ring.

Get over yourself or better yet run away to some far away place with lots of mirrors and stare lovingly into your own eyes...but just do it far away from here.

One of them was complaining yesterday that the door of his Xbox was broken and he couldn't get it open. The door on mine has been broken for months, and my young son can open it in about four seconds. All you have to do is stick a pen or something in there and press a button. It couldn't be easier. I used to listen to them because there weren't any other options for morning sports talk around here. It was either the Junkies or Mike and Mike (generic ESPN BS at its best). And I fucking HATE Mike and Mike.

But I just couldn't take all of the non-sports BS they talk about and their gambling fixation any more.

I've switched to AM 570, the Steve Czaban show is much much better.

First, I wouldn;t really calling it pissing away a law degree as a good percentage of people with law degrees don't actually practice law. The contract he is on now pays more than most government jobs requiring a JD. And, let's be honest, JP would not be able to land a job at a white shoe law firm or even a top 500 firm. At best, he would be a DUI or personal injury lawyer. This job pays the same and has much less stress.

Second, he did pass the bar. Lurch never passes a bar.

Can you imagine JP arguing in front of a jury? LOL.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I implore you...there's no way my client, as much of a donk that he is, could have financed his wife's murder. He's totally felted. The evidence is trifling at best and the prosecution's best witness is just salty because she was butt-cised for him and he wouldn't reciprocate. It's probably money to think that some other rick did it."

Well out of the piss poor selection of local radio shows these days, the Junkies are still better than most I guess. Even with JP ruining every segment he tries to get involved in.

On WJFK, the best show is probably Danny Rouhier, followed by the Junkies. Wise is unbearable to listen tom and so is Lavar, although for different reasons.

The unfortunate thing is, the "stars" are the problem with the shows. Holden Kushner on his own isn't bad at all, and Dukes is much better when he is solo.

In the end, I happily pay for Opie and Anthony and Howard Stern instead of listening to any local radio.
