Breaking news from Bloom

elgian supermarket chain Delhaize says it is cutting almost 5,000 jobs in the United States as it closes 'underperforming' stores.

Delhaize said nationally it is shutting down 113 Food Lion supermarkets, as well as seven Bloom and six Bottom Dollar Food stores within the next 30 days.

In Maryland, the Bloom store on 8425 Woodsboro Pike in Walkersville will close.

In Virginia, Bloom stores will close at the following locations:

-7000 Columbia Pike, Annandale
- 43930 Farmwell Road, Ashburn
- 11181-A Lee highway, Fairfax
- 1050 Elden Street, Herndon
- 240 Fort Evans Road, Leesburg
- 14055 Nobelwood Plaza, Woodbridge

Five Bottom Dollar Food stores are slated to close in Virginia, and one in our area, at 8750 Richmond Highway in Alexandria.

A distribution center located in Tennessee will also be closed.

Ron Hodge, the CEO of Delhaize America, said "we believe these actions will enable us to better serve our customers in our markets with high density, while positioning the company for future growth.''

Bloom in Fairfax (Rust Rd/Jermantown) must be one of the Blooms on the chopping block. I guess Wallmart will expand its parrachute pants line. A new night club would be better. Bands , dancings, above normal bar fare food, drafts for 150 5-7pm... We Peeps need some new action. Come on investors!!

11181-A Lee highway, Fairfax
That's the one next to WalMart

I was only in the Fairfax Bloom once or twice.... was it typically a bad place to shop? If not, kinda feel bad for them... they didn't do nothing to anyone and WalMart comes in and knocks the shit out of them.

Keep dreaming. Most likely a mattress store or martial art studio. We
need more of those.

Bottom Dollar was great when they first opened. They had 36packs of Bud for $11. Now all the prices are higher then Walmart & Aldi.

Very logical for WalMart to take that spot. That's what they were probably planning on.

You're probably right. I was just being sarcastic. I liked the convenience
of Bloom because I live closeby and it was never very crowded. It still
isn't but it's been nearly empty of customers every since Wal-Mart
opened. The only consolation is that Wal-Mart groceries are cheaper
and the lines move quite fast. Parking is a mess though.

isn't the BLOOM in Annandale just a couple years old and company seemed to go to great expense to remodel that location
the fairfax city BLOOM(next to the new Walmart) was atrocious for its service. I got feeling the company sent all their worst employees to this one store. even way before the Walmart business sucked at this location

the BLOOM in Herndon seemed to draw heavily from the Hispanic population. here's an area that has had huge population increase and slated for much more with one Safeway, one Giant and one Shoppers Food Warehouse and none of them international grocery stores. seems like an underserved area but not as bad as Chantilly

Looks like the BLOOM in Fair Lakes, near the WALMART(always found this store decently run but has had a recent managerial change) remains open and the BlOOM between Chantilly and Herndon also

the only Bottom Dollar i know of around here is out in Manassas. went in last summer and found the prices were pretty much the same as most other discount grocer's i.e. Walmart with not much of a selection

I didn't realize that FOOD LION/BLOOM was not U.S. owned anymore. I seem to remember a former CEO was in a lot of their tv commercials back in the 1990's(ACC college basketball games) but he was ousted on not so good terms

I lived by the Fairfax Bloom for 4 years, got carded for beer every time. There were only 10 people who worked there so I usually got the same cashier every trip. If the people were friendlier and there was a bigger draw than beer selection (which Wegmans has them beat handily on), they could have held on.

For all you Walmart fans in NOVA, Walmart (in Fairfax) is to expand sometime in the not so distant future. Bloom is dead within 30 days and Walmart is looking to take over their store! Probably an obvious outcome with a Wally-World next door. Who's excited? (BTW, another pointless piece of information for a Facebook status update: Bloom's new hours for all who like that place is now Sunday --> Saturday (everyday) 8:00 am to 6:00 pm (that is right 6:00 pm).

Just went to the Bloom in Annandale on Columbia Pike and found out that starting today they've reduced their store hours. Used to be open until 11 and now they close at 6. They're probably just trying to unload their current inventory before they close in a week or two.

there's a Bloom next to Walmart in Fair Lakes also. I'm surprised that one stays in business. Even worse (for Food Lion), it's next to three big boxes that sell groceries.

I remember when the one off of Ox Road closed they stopped sending shipments on the trucks and the manager got transfered so they brought in this temporary guy. Then everything went on sale and the hours were reduced. Eventually they just closed down and Golds Gym came in but the phones still had the food lion on it for the longest time. I knew some people who worked there and apparently the company and they were transferred either to Manassas or Lee Highway. I never bought chicken from the store because it was prepacked. However the meat had some good cuts. The butcher really knew what he was doing so you could get some lean pieces there. That location seems to be the kiss of death for that shopping center. I remember Crown Books, Track Auto, Fresh Fields, Food Lion, and now Gold's Gym. Just a matter of time before they leave.

Which would explain why WalMart placed their centered on the building rather than their store. When they expand it will look like it was always planned that way.

Any chance that's enough space for them to be a "Super"?

If they convert that whole center to a super, they will need to do something with the flow of the parking lot. It's bad enough now. If they convert and don't do anything with the lot.. it will be the worst one in Fairfax.

Yeah, just a matter of time until the Gold's leaves. Sure. It's not like that gym isn't packed every morning, every evening, and all weekend.

Yeah and it's not like Fresh Fields wasn't packed day and night either. The people who own the shopping center are the ones who jack up their lease. However the reason behind Food Lion's departure was for mixed reasons. First, they were int he process of converting all of the Food Lions either to Bottom Dolalrs or Bloom. Second, the owners of the shopping center kept screwing around with the lease, Food Lion did not own the building. Since the location had some of the weirdest demographics, the company couldn't decide on turning it into a Bottom Dollar or a Bloom. So they just closed the location completely. Like I said there would be some of the weirdest custoemrs and people who frequented that place like the Indian guy in a Jaguar who used to go through the dumpsters and steal expired food.

Kind of saw this coming a couple years back after transition from Food Lion to updated Bloom. All things considered- Bloom food stores are pretty nice. Their advertising never did compete with Giant and Harris Teeter.

Lot's of jobs being lost 'round here and should be a concern for ALL that read this thread. Let's hope those that are losing their Bloom jobs get some kind of severance-pay benefit that affords them some time to seek new employment. No one needs to be without a job these days in N. VA!

Bloom has done a pretty good job of appealing to no one. It's like marketers came together and said,"let's make a grocery store that elicits absolutely no interest from potential customers and call it some mundane...like Bloom."

I think Food Lion strayed too far from it's rural niche.

I have a hunting camp in Lovingston, Va (about 30 miles south of Charlottesville) and for years the only grocery store was a crappy IGA that was about half the size of a CVS drug store. Food Lion built a big new store out on 29 and now the locals are happy as pigs in shit. The IGA went belly up and now Food Lion is the only game in town.

I'm not sure that bleached meat story was legit. Didn't the same Dateline bunch do a story about Chevy pickup truck fuel tanks that allegedly blew up in collisions? When their test truck failed to explode they used an explosive device to help it along.

They didn't bleach it. They would take meat that was expired, cover it in BBQ and package it as new.

In fairness, I think it only happened at one store and the employees responsible were fired as soon as Food Lion found out about it. In fact, Food Lion won the lawsuit (I think it was against ABC's PrimeTime Live, not NBC's Dateline), claiming that they were lied to by the ABC employee and hired him/her under false pretenses. If you notice, you don't see those hidden camera shows anymore because of it. Small victory, but, yes, Food Lion has never fully recovered from the bad press.

I saw this report in first run, so I can say with authority that it was on ABC's 20/20 (although I think they also aired the same segment on PrimeTime Live). They put barbecue sauce on expired meat (I think it was spare ribs), and used bleach and lemon juice on expired fish.

I got so angry when I saw the report (fucking with my food is one of the things I can guarantee will make me lose my temper, and quickly) that I vowed never to shop at a Food Lion again, and when I broke my vow 12 years later, it was only to buy canned or packaged goods where I could check the expiration date.

btws, is that Gold's Gym in Burke off Chain Bridge formerly the one that was located in Fairfax City in the old Fairfax Elementary school? If it is still owned by the brother's who started the Gold's gym's in NoVa? I think the one in Fairfax City was the first they opened in the area.

And my prediction for next grocery store to close is the Fresh Market in Vienna. Business is very slow. Poor choice of location by Fresh Market right next to a huge Giant and Whole Foods down the street. I actually like Fresh Market but they really should have located elsewhere in the county. Like out in underserved Chantilly

The Great falls plaza bloom will be returned to food lion.
I always liked food lion better than bloom.
It will be great to have food lion around again. Its king of like a cross between a 7-11 and a giant. Great place to stop on the way home from work to get a 12 pack of sam adams, some chips and baby carrots. Not so good for weekly shopping.

Here is the full list of food lion conversions
