Wtf, a bunch of fighter jets (f16s they sounded like, loud as hell) just flew over really close together with a softer sounding plane or chopper bringing up the rear or last atleast. I live off henderson, in Fairfax Station..this is not normal. Does anybody know what's going on? This happened around 12:45ish, the planes sounded really low flying almost as if they could hit the damn house! Does anybody else hear it? I couldn't see them, when I looked up I heard it but didn't see anything!

Roar of jets keeping you awake? Talk about it on our Facebook page.

F-16 fighter jets, a helicopter and the Civil Air Patrol planned to take to the skies over the Washington area between midnight tonight and 2 a.m. Wednesday.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command training operation, dubbed Falcon Virgo, is a series of flights held in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration, Civil Air Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard and other federal agencies.

The exercise is "designed to hone NORAD’s intercept and identification operations" and test its visual warning system.

In the event of inclement weather, the exercise will take place the next day.

Actually, they fly around here pretty regularly. Clearly you've been fortunate to have missed that fact.

In case you didn't realize it, there are a number of military bases in the area. They do exercises, they fly their planes and helicopters, and they make noise. It's called Military Defense. Welcome to America.

And you might want to check out this thread on the subject. Maybe you could even search for threads BEFORE you post.

Thank goodness there is another thread on this. The entire Internet was grinding to a halt with all of the discussion going on in the other thread.
