Fairfax County, Virginia USA, Monday, November 7, 2011 -

Bechtel Corporation, one of the world’s largest engineering, construction and project management companies, will relocate its Global Operations headquarters and other functions from Maryland to Fairfax County, Gov. Bob McDonnell announced today. The company also will locate its Government Services business unit, its U.S.-based Civil business, Bechtel Enterprises, and corporate functions and services in Fairfax County, creating a total of 625 new jobs.

Bechtel will lease nearly 200,000 square feet between the One Reston Overlook and Two Reston Overlook buildings near Reston Town Center about eight miles from Washington Dulles International Airport.

Bechtel Corporation is among the most respected engineering, project management, and construction companies in the world. Founded in 1898, the company has worked on more than 22,000 projects in 140 countries on all seven continents. Today, its 53,000 employees team with customers, partners and suppliers on diverse projects in nearly 50 countries through five global business units that specialize in civil infrastructure, power generation, communications and transmission, mining and metals, oil, gas and chemicals, and government services. Bechtel reported annual sales of $27 billion in 2010. The company’s corporate headquarters is in San Francisco.

Bechtel already is active in Fairfax County. The company is the lead partner of Dulles Transit Partners, the contractor responsible for building Phase One of the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project extension. Additionally, the company has been active in community and civic affairs in the county, with many senior leaders serving in key roles on northern Virginia boards and chambers of commerce.

“We look forward to opening our offices in Fairfax County next year,” said Bill Dudley, Bechtel president and chief operating officer. “The Reston Town Center is an ideal location for Bechtel. We will have better proximity to our domestic and international customers, many nearby amenities, and more transportation options for our employees to and from work.”

“Because of its size and stature as an engineering and construction firm that works on some of the largest and most complex projects on the planet, Bechtel’s decision to establish its Global Operations headquarters in Fairfax County is a big step toward diversifying the local economic base, and the job opportunities will strengthen the quality of life we enjoy here,” said Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., president and CEO of the FCEDA. “The company will be able to take advantage of Fairfax County’s workforce and business assets, and we are proud to be able to add Bechtel operations to our corporate community.”

“The decision by Bechtel to locate here demonstrates yet again the strength and success of Fairfax County’s business-friendly culture and policies,” said Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova. “Bechtel is a major addition to the county’s business community, and I am proud to welcome its employees to Fairfax County.”

The FCEDA worked with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership to secure the project for Fairfax County and Virginia. Governor McDonnell approved a $1.5 million grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to assist Fairfax County with the project.

The governor also approved $5 million in funds from the Virginia Economic Development Incentive Grant (VEDIG). VEDIG was established as a self-funded program of performance-based incentives that the Commonwealth awards to exceptional economic development projects with large numbers of employees and very high wages relative to average wages for that particular area. Through its Virginia Jobs Investment Program, the Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide funding and services to support the company’s recruitment, training and retraining activities.

No, it's called corruption. These big businesses wine and dine the crooked politicians to see which State will offer the most "concessions" to entice them to locate in their State.

I guarantee Bechtel got major tax breaks to move their fucking office here. Meanwhile, we (taxpayers) get all the traffic and other shit that goes with it.

Maryland won this one. They will still get the taxes on the income that their residents earn in VA.

What kind of delusional world do you live in. They get the tax breaks that VA offers as opposed to MD. Md getting taxes from employees living there is no different than VA getting taxes for people that work in MD or DC. Va will not get the corporate tax ect

You must be one of those people that think businesses should be taxed to hell and then complain when they relocate overseas.

tax break and lobbying Virginia for overspending on lucrative road/rail projects.

CorpWatch wrote in 2003, George P. Schultz, Bechtel board member, "used his political connections to lobby on behalf of a military invasion of Iraq. Bechtel received a request to bid on the reconstruction of Iraq before the invasion even began in a secret, undemocratic process. The contract itself has still not been seen by the Congress, much less the American public. Bechtel has once again used its revolving door to benefit itself and its friends at the expense of the majorities of the world's people and the planet." [5]
