How atr you celebrating the MLK Holiday in Fairfax County?

While every year I thing hard about how to celebrate the MLK Holiday and it is tough because I don't work for a bank or the government and have to show up for work...

But this year is different, I am taking a floating holiday!

I am going over to my brothers house. He has 2 young kids and is going out of his way to do this right. His plans are to have the kids watch some DVDs on the subject - he got "Fat Albert (the original cartoons)" and a couple of "Good Times" DVDs including the "James is dead" episode and at least one episode with Janet Jackson. After his kids watch the program, we will have a discussion on what is probably like to be black in America.

Anybody have any interesting plans or are you waiting for the Cinco de Mayo holiday so you can do it up right?

I kid you not; my wife went to pick up my son at preschool on Friday and the kids were enjoying cake and chocolate ice cream. My wife asked whose birthday it was, and the three and four year olds all replied "Martin Luther King."

Chocolate ice cream?

I dream of a day when ice cream will be judged by the content of its cone and not by the color of its creamy goodness.

Friday was a state holiday but you wouldnt know it unless you had to go to a state office. Lee-Jackson day. I had a co-worker ask me who is this guy Lee Jackson? Another product of the Fairfax school system.

I used to work for the State. The Lee-Jackson Day State holiday goes WAY back (the 20's, I think)...on the 3rd Monday in January. Then by coincidence, the third Monday in January became Martin Luther Koon Day. The State fought it, but we ended up with a Lee-Jackson-King Day holiday for a few years....talk about strange bedfellows!

Comically, one day, some spade expressed his outrage to me about the grouping together of these holidays. I told da bro to chill...that it was actually Spike Lee-Jesse Jackson-Martin Luther King Day. That satisfied the stupid rughead, and he walked off.

Anyway, I can't remember why, but they eventually made Friday Lee-Jackson Day, and the following Monday MLK Day.

that's harsh man. Martin Luther King was a great guy and it's shameful that he was killed. i wasnt even alive during the same period of time as him but im glad he was around to help human race better itself. i wish i could have met the man.

People who actually work for a living don't get off, so no time to celebrate.
