For someone who supposedly doesn't care you sure are doing a lot of posting. :-)

Can you show me at exactly which point in the thread I lost? And can you explain what "lost" means in the context of a dopey message board thread such as this one? I'm very interested in hearing your thoughts on how one can "win" a discussion like this. Thanks in advance. :-)

Any thoughts on what's best for home defense? I'm thinking of a Mossberg 500, but I'd like to get a biometric safe, and I don't think those are made for shotguns. Also, what's best for home defense ammo?

Whoa, that's a heck of a comeback there. See, that's what I'm talking about: putting a little effort into it. Frankly you've been doing a piss-poor job overall. Probably no different than everything else you do in life. :-)

A 500 will get the job done for sure and they're pretty cheap. For home defense, I would prefer a Mossberg 590-A1 (metal trigger & guard, silent foregrip, and tested to military specs for durability).
Biometric vaults are notorious for failure, which would be the worst-case for a gun-safe. I have even had an electronic-key gun-vault fail to open (returned it that day). I recommend the V-Line Industries Line of products. They are not electric so they are much more reliable:
http://www.vlineind.com/

If you do go electric, make sure to get a model with a key-override. You can simply put the key in the hole while you're sleeping so you'll have easy, quick, reliable access to your gun. This new (untested) product seems very promising. Let us know if you get one:

No one thing is best for everyone - if there was, there'd only be one thing.

There are an incredible amount of variables specific to YOU and YOUR LIFE (e.g. objectives, abilities, specific knowledge, routines, skills, deficiencies, other weapons possessed, house type, house residents, budget, stature, laws) that should effect your decision to be armed, and if so, with what.

I suggest that you actively research... a lot. It isn't just buy-load-click-threat eliminated-make dinner. There are many great, relevant sources out there (including other forums), but I'll point you to an array of articles by world-class self-defense instructor Massad Ayoob:

"I you were to have only one gun for home defense I strongly believe it should be a handgun" - Ayoob

Ayoob on shotguns for home defense, starting at 2:00 mark:

Knowledge is power.

I'll give that a 3/10. I know you felt clever when you thought of it, but it's really not applicable to anything we've discussed so far. So it comes across as pretty desperate. :-)

Thanks a lot. That 10 minute video was very informative. Are the gun shows at Chantilly that much cheaper than going to a brick and mortar shop?

If you are going to get a Mossberg 500-variety shotgun, you can go to Dicks and get that for a reasonable price. For home defense I'd look into the Mossberg 500 Persuader, it has a little shorter barrel than the 500 field shotgun. I think it runs $300 or so, maybe $400 (50-100 more than the 500 field shotgun). But if you plan on using it to eventually shoot trap or skeet then get the field shotgun because of the longer barrel. If you get into skeet/trap regularly you'll be buying a semiautomatic shotgun anyway instead of using a pump-action.

If you want a really short stockless Mossberg 500 with pistol grip then the gun show is where to go. But they aren't as accurate because with such a short barrel and without a stock they aren't really aimable, just pointable. But they are very portable in a house.

Ah, so contrary to an hour ago, being an early riser is no longer a problem. Your positions are as consistent as ever. Ever considered a career in politics? :-)

You can admit you're obsessed with me. There's no shame in it. I don't mind you tracking exactly which days and times I post. Any kind of nonsense which keeps you indoors & occupied is probably a good thing for the world. :-)

Yes, you can tell with all the effort I put in these posts how emotionally invested I am. S-)

Whew, thank you for admitting it. For a moment there I thought you were going to deny being emotionally invested, in which case the only conceivable reason for your flip-flopping would be general stupidity. But you really came through with some honesty there. :-)

You think the Skins are going to win tonight? I hope both teams lose. Think that's possible?

Oops, you'd better tell The American Heritage Dictionary that they're wrong: http://grammar.about.com/od/grammarfaq/f/butsentencefaq.htm

Hey, this reminds me of something. You deserve a big "Well done" for eliminating all the unintentional grammar mistakes from your posts over the last few days. Clearly me making fun of them really had an impact, as you've really cleaned things up. (I see however that you've been making intentional mistakes to try to get me to stop making fun of the unintentional ones. So adorable!)

Anyway, glad to see I have such an effect on you. :-)

Well we both know that's false. :-) Seriously though -- great work these last few days. I didn't think you had it in you, but you've really stepped up and learned how to type in a coherent fashion.

I know it was frustrating for you when I kept pointing out your mistakes, but it was all for the best. See how that works? :-)

Ah, new tactic. Excellent. Sorry to say but I'm just doing the t-shirt and shorts thing at the moment. Pretty boring.

So wifey in fact didn't let you use the computer last night? Boy, so confusing!

Yeah I saw it. But it's such a terrible line that I didn't even bother responding to it. It's interesting though that you repeated it -- you must really think it's funny. I bet you often find yourself telling "jokes" and not getting the expected laughs. :-)

On a more important note, what is it like being the registered user that everyone knows has engaged in an inane back and forth with a nitwit for multiple days? That has to boost your reptuation here, right? A-)

That's the beauty of all this: You think I care about reputation. This simple misconception is driving all your doomed "efforts" in this thread -- you think you're going to "win" by "ruining" my reputation. LOL.

It makes so little sense that it's almost hard to imagine that you're dumb enough to believe it. After all, the majority of my posts in this forum are fairly rude -- insults directed towards people who I think are being stupid. So clearly I'm not worried about having a positive reputation. And if you try to claim that what I want is some kind of negative reputation, then you'd have to explain how our little back-and-forth here would hurt a negative reputation. See the flaw in logic? How many seconds did you actually spend thinking about this? :-)

Thanks for admitting you're a nitwit though. It's pretty obvious, but it's still nice to see you're aware of it. The first step is admitting it to yourself. :-)

I don't need to play judge or switch screen names. I leave that to you and your self declared victorys (yet again). F-)

1.) Taurus doesn't advertise the Judge as a niche role weapon. They have been aggressive to market it as the ideal personal defense weapon. They even have called it an "anti-carjacking device."

2.) Since its introduction, the Judge has flown off the shelves. People hear "shotgun revolver" and think it's the most awesome thing ever.

No, while Taurus has been aggressive with the marketing, it doesn't mean it is a good weapon or even decent build quality. I take it you don't know anything about what I am talking about.

WHO SAID OTHERWISE?

THE PURCHASE POPULARITY OF WEAPONS OF THE "SELF-DEFENSE" VARIETY IS, UNFORTUNATELY, MORE A FUNCTION OF MARKETING AND FORM THAN FUNCTION. THIS IS DUE TO THE NATURE OF THE CUSTOMER BASE.

Anyone that knows .410 bore being shot out a three inch, rifled barrel is as useful as tits on a fish.

Anyone that knows Taurus has a reputation for producing substandard quality.

Wow, your English is worse than I thought. Can you show me where in that sentence I say that I'm talking to you? ("You" as in the self-proclaimed nitwit.)

I know you really want to get me on something, but you need to be able to read carefully for that to have any chance of happening. :-)
