(AP)ARLINGTON, Va. - Major roads are closed near the Pentagon Friday morning as authorities investigate a suspicious vehicle on Route 27/Washington Boulevard.

The closures include the following roads:

Washington Boulevard/Route 27 between Interstate 395 and Route 110, which is all around the Pentagon;

Route 110 is closed around the Pentagon;

All ramps to and from Interstate 395 near the Pentagon, including the HOV ramps. Northbound Glebe Road is last I-395 exit you can take.

Eastbound Interstate 66 to Route 110;

Ramp from George Washington Parkway to northbound I-395.

It's not known when the roads will reopen.

There are few details at this point.

Arlington County Police spokeswoman Crystal Nosal tells WTOP police are investigating a suspicious vehicle on Washington Boulevard.

ARLINGTON, Va. (WUSA) -- An investigation into a suspicious vehicle in Arlington has shut down roads near the Pentagon.

Crystal Nosal, spokesperson for the Arlington County Police Department, says a suspicious vehicle was discovered on Washington Boulevard just before 6:00 Friday morning. Right now the investigation has shut down Washington Boulevard near the Pentagon. Ramps to the Pentagon are also closed.

Chris Layman, spokesman for Pentagon Police, says they are assisting U.S. Park Police in closing the northbound Washington Blvd. (Rte. 27) off-ramp that goes into the Pentagon Parking lot. Virginia State Police are also involved in the investigation.

ARLINGTON, Va. (WUSA) -- An investigation into a suspicious vehicle in Arlington has shut down roads near the Pentagon.

Chris Layman, spokesman for Pentagon Police, tells the Associated Press there is one person in custody and other people may be involved. According to Layman, the car is near the Pentagon's North Parking lot in bushes.

Officials tell 9NEWS NOW they have detonated a package found with the vehicle.

CBS News reports the Department of Homeland Security has a person in custody who is suspected of planting suspicious devices around the Pentagon, Arlington National Cemetery and the Iwo Jima Memorial.

Crystal Nosal, spokesperson for the Arlington County Police Department, says a suspicious vehicle was discovered on Washington Boulevard around 5:30 Friday morning. Right now the investigation has shut down Washington Boulevard near the Pentagon. Ramps to the Pentagon are also closed.

Virginia State Police are also involved in the investigation.

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Authorities found al Qaeda-related statements, a backpack containing ammonium nitrate, and spent 9mm shells Friday after stopping a suspicious vehicle close to the Pentagon and arresting a man, ABC's "Good Morning America" reported.

Pentagon Police arrested one person Friday and closed several roads around the US Department of Defense headquarters after officers stopped a suspicious vehicle and discovered a backpack believed to contain ammonium nitrate, FOX News Channel reported.

Brass shells can be used as shrapnel in the construction of an IED. If he really had ammonia nitrate in his possession, I'd say it is a safe bet that is what the shells are for.

Pentagon scare prompts probe; 1 in custody

Authorities continued to investigate Friday a man found after dark in Arlington National Cemetery whose discovery led to police finding a suspicious vehicle parked outside the Pentagon.

The man, who the FBI only described as being approximately in his 20s, was being held by the U.S. Park Police. No charges have been filed against him.

"This is all very unfolding and a continuing investigation," FBI Special Agent Brenda Heck, who heads the bureau's counterterrorism division in its Washington field office, told reporters Friday morning.

The man was detained after the U.S. Park Police came across him in early Friday morning in Arlington National Cemetery, when it is closed, triggering an investigation. The Park Police then launched a search for the man's vehicle, which was found near the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., just outside of Washington, D.C., Park Police spokesman Sgt. David Schlosser said.

The 2011 red Nissan prompted the Arlington County Fire Department's bomb disposal unit to follow protocols, including the use of a water cannon, to render the vehicle safe, a police spokeswoman told reporters.

Heck said no suspicious items were found in the vehicle.

Pentagon police spokesman Chris Layman said the car was in bushes near the Pentagon's north parking lot.

Previously, the man in custody was reported to have been suspected of planting suspicious devices in the Arlington area, at the national cemetery, the Pentagon and the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial, also known as the Iwo Jima Memorial. Schlosser did not confirm that report.

CBS News reports that the Marine Corps Memorial is open to the public. Arlington National Cemetery was briefly closed but has since reopened.

Matthew Chandler, a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security, told CBS News that federal agencies were involved with the investigation.

"DHS is monitoring a suspicious vehicle incident causing road closures around the Pentagon," Chandler said. "This is a law enforcement matter at this time, with the U.S. Park Police and the Arlington County Police Department as leads and other federal agencies on the scene."

In another incident earlier this week, a motorist found with a gun and what appeared to be a suspicious package near the Pentagon was taken into custody.

A man who was carrying suspected bomb making materials and pro-al-Qaeda literature was arrested in Arlington National Cemetery early today, triggering a bomb scare that snarled Washington's morning rush hour. The FBI, however, determined that the material in his backpack was harmless.

Brenda Heck, special agent in charge of counterterrorism for the FBI, "There was not a device and the products found are determined right now to be inert."

She said the items in the backpack were still being tested. Sources told ABC News that the backpack contained what was believed to be ammonium nitrate and spent ammunition for an automatic weapon.

Heck also said, "We believe he did act alone."

Two separate law enforcement sources told ABC News identified the suspect as Yonathan Melaku, 22, of Alexandria, Va. U.S. Park Police said no charges have been filed against him yet.

The statements were found in a notebook that contained mostly notes for a financial class. There was also was a page containing words "al qaeda," "Taliban rules," "mujahidin" and "defeated coalition forces."

Melaku allegedly told police that there were other "devices" in the area and also the location of a vehicle.

Police were investigating a vehicle, a red 2011 Nissan, that contained materials authorities were examining to determine if it was a bomb or other weapon. The possible device was reported neutralized, according to law enforcement spokesmen at the scene.

The Department of Homeland Security's spokesman Matthew Chandler would only say that the agency is monitoring a suspicious vehicle.

"DHS is monitoring a suspicious vehicle incident causing road closures around the Pentagon," he said in a statement. "This is a law enforcement matter at this time, with the U.S. Park Police and the Arlington County Police Department as leads and other federal agencies on the scene."

The Pentagon and the surrounding areas were closed this morning and police are looking for two more people who may be involved.

Park Police Sgt. David Scholsser said in a news conference the man was found at about 1:30 a.m. in the Arlington National Cemetery, located near the Pentagon. When questioned, Melaku was uncooperative but then took the police to his car.

Melaku was arrested last month for smashing windows and stealing valuables from 27 cars in Leesburg, Va. He was charged with four counts of grand larceny although the police did not find any discernible ideological motive.

UPDATE 9:11 a.m.: Police have arrested 22-year-old Yonathan Melaku, of Alexandria, in the rash of vehicle tamperings in the 500 block of Glade Fern Terrace in Leesburg.

Melaku is charged with four counts of Grand Larceny, and is being held at the Loudoun County Adult Dentention Center on a $5,000 bond.

BTW - if he was found with "ammonium nitrate" in plastic bags in his backpack at Arlington National Cemetery I wonder if he was sneaking in to fertilize a gravesite. My folks are buried there and their gravesite is typically brown and decrepit looking - nothing that a little fertilizer couldn't fix up (and, given what we've now seen, I have permanently given up on going there with a plastic bag of fertilizer - something I've thought about MANY times!).

Now that they're saying "nothing suspicious" I wonder if what he had was either fertilizer or plain old laundry detergent...

Patch spoke with an 11-year-old boy named Dagnachew who lives on William Edgar Drive, the street that has been the main focus of law enforcement attention in Franconia.

The boy said Meluku, the suspect connected to the suspicious Pentagon package, lived with Meluku's father on the street. The boy did not know Meluku, but described his father as quiet and friendly.

"We don't really know him," the boy said. He added that the father was behind the FBI perimeter on Schurtz St, being interviewed by authorities.

Pentagon attack suspect a Marine reservist

ARLINGTON, Va. - The man police detained in connection with the alleged attempted attack on the Pentagon Friday morning is a member of the military and was arrested last month for a rash of vehicle tamperings in Leesburg, WTOP has learned.

Police first found the 22-year-old man, a lance corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps reserve, in Arlington National Cemetery after 1 a.m. when the facility was closed. He briefly fled police before being detained near the Pentagon.

The man's 2011 Nissan was located in the bushes near the Pentagon's north parking lot off Route 27/Washington Boulevard. He claimed he had ammonium nitrate with him in his backpack, and that he had left material at the Pentagon, sources tell WTOP. Ammonium nitrate is a chemical compound that is widely used in fertilizers and can be used in explosives with the correct concentration.

Police also found spent shell casings and a notebook containing the words "al Qaeda" and "Taliban rules," CBS reports.

Officials say the material in the backpack was not ammonium nitrate but there were "inert" suspicious items and products in the bag. Brenda Heck, special agent in charge of counterterrorism for the FBI's Washington field office, says there also has been no suspicious activity associated with the man's vehicle.

The man has not been charged with any crimes and officials say he acted alone. WTOP is not identifying him, but Leesburg police confirm he was arrested last month in connection with a rash of auto tampering and charged with four counts of grand larceny.

Bomb squad investigators and bomb-sniffing dogs also searched the man's home in the Autumn Chase development in the Franconia area of Fairfax County, where the suspect lives with his parents. Bomb techs reportedly went into the home without a search warrant due to a possible public safety threat. They determined there was no threat and were waiting for a warrant to continue searching. No neighbors had to be evacuated.

The security scare sent the morning commute into a tailspin, prompting most major roads around the Pentagon to close. The closures started around 5 a.m. Police reopened the last of the closed roads around 11 a.m.

The closures near the Pentagon included heavily traveled Washington Boulevard between Interstate 395 and Route 110, Route 110, and the ramp from eastbound Interstate 66 to Route 110.

The investigation also forced Metro and ART buses to be rerouted. Metro diverted buses to Pentagon City.

The closures started around 5 a.m. Police reopened the last of the closed roads around 11 a.m.

Although the suspect was apprehended inside Arlington National Cemetery, spokeswoman Jennifer Lynch says no gravestones or gravesites were desecrated.

The cemetery opened at about 8:30 a.m., about 30 minutes later than usual, because of a security sweep.

Melaku claimed he had ammonium nitrate with him in his backpack and that he had left material at the Pentagon, sources tell WTOP. Ammonium nitrate is a chemical compound that is widely used in fertilizers and can be used in explosives with the correct concentration.

Police also found spent shell casings and a notebook containing the words "al Qaeda" and "Taliban rules," CBS reports.

Officials say the material in the backpack was not ammonium nitrate but there were "inert" suspicious items and products in the bag. The FBI says the backpack materials will be tested further at the FBI laboratory in Quantico, Va.

Melaku's 2011 Nissan also was located in a wooded area near the Pentagon directly off Route 27 and Route 110, the FBI says. The FBI says investigators found no immediate threat connected with the vehicle, which has been removed from the scene for further processing.

Melaku has not been charged with any crimes and officials say he acted alone. He is being held in U.S. Park Police custody.

According to the U.S. Marine Corps, Melaku joined the Marine Corps Reserve in September 2007 and is currently listed as a lance corporal and a motor vehicle operator with Combat Engineer Support Company, 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve. Melaku, who has not deployed overseas, previously has been awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Selected Marine Corps Reserve Medal.

Leesburg Police also confirm Melaku was arrested last month in connection with incidents of auto tampering and charged with four counts of grand larceny.

Bomb squad investigators and bomb-sniffing dogs Friday searched Melaku's home in the Autumn Chase development in the Franconia area of Fairfax County, where the suspect lives with his parents. Bomb techs reportedly went into the home without a search warrant due to a possible public safety threat. They determined there was no threat and were waiting for a warrant to continue searching. No neighbors had to be evacuated.

The security scare sent the morning commute into a tailspin, prompting most major roads around the Pentagon to close. The closures started around 5 a.m. Police reopened the last of the closed roads around 11 a.m.

The closures near the Pentagon included heavily traveled Washington Boulevard between Interstate 395 and Route 110, Route 110, and the ramp from eastbound Interstate 66 to Route 110.

The investigation also forced Metro and ART buses to be rerouted. Metro diverted buses to Pentagon City.

Although the suspect was apprehended inside Arlington National Cemetery, spokeswoman Jennifer Lynch says no gravestones or gravesites were desecrated.

The cemetery opened at about 8:30 a.m., about 30 minutes later than usual, because of a security sweep.

It's standard procedure when you have a suspicous person/vehicle so close to a landmark or high profile target. They caught the guy at 1:30am last night and did a thorough check of the area. If this had been a bomb (or worse a dirty bomb) you'd be complaining they didn't do enough. No the media went wild reporting all kinds of crap this morning trying to outscoop each other.

I have to turn the channel when he starts reporting.

The dramatic pauses are annoying and insulting, as if I am unable to understand what he's telling me. He has to emphasize it for me because I can't figure out when to be surprised or outraged.

I think the story is some poor loser got stopped by a low-level cop and a story got blown way out of proportion and plastic bags of laundry detergent with dirty clothes were in the backpack and the poor guy's legitimate financial course notebook with some notes from some OTHER class situation got ,isinterpreted and now the FBI/ATF/DIA/CIA?FBI/and Gawd knows what other "law enforcement" agencies are too embarrassed to just say "No story here; move along".

The Media, of course, has dropped the story already.

Melaku was arrested by Leesburg Police Department on May 27 and he made a $5,000 bond the same day, according to Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Kraig Troxell.

According to police, Melaku was identified as the suspect in the auto tampering case that occurred on May 26.

Pentagon bomb plot

Melaku was found in Arlington National Cemetery after 1 a.m. on June 17 and was taken into custody, according to the Associated Press. He was carrying a bag with a substance that appeared to be ammonium nitrate, according to the Associated Press. According to ABC News, Melaku was also carrying materials and notes that made reference to al Qaeda.

Authorities also found Melaku’s 2011 Nissan on June 17 parked near the Pentagon in the bushes of a parking lot, according to the Associated Press, but found nothing suspicious inside the vehicle. Authorities also searched his Fairfax house.

No federal charges have been made at this time against Melaku in the June 17 Pentagon incident.

IIRC, hammer strikes or pin strikes on the primers are pretty unique. Not sure if they are 100% unique like the rifling causes to a bullet, but they give a good indication as to the small universe of likely weapons used to fire the bullet.

ARLINGTON, Va. - A Marine reservist who was detained during a security scare near the Pentagon last week has been linked to the shootings last year at the Marine Corps museum in Quantico and several D.C.-area military recruitment stations, officials said Wednesday.

Ballistics evidence appears to link Yonathan Melaku, 22, to the shootings, one official said. The two officials spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

Melaku, of Alexandria, Va., is being held without bail on unrelated larceny charges involving car break-ins that happened after the shootings. He has not been charged in last week's incident or the building shootings.

Melaku, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Ethiopia, was detained Friday after he was spotted carrying a suspicious backpack near the Pentagon containing what initially was feared to be bomb-making material. Authorities later said the suspicious items were not explosive.

Melaku also had a notebook with the words "al-Qaida" and "Taliban Rules" written inside, one of the officials has said. The context of the words was not immediately clear, but another law enforcement official has said Melaku is not believed to have any links to al-Qaida or any other terrorist organization.

He was detained for trespassing after being found after-hours inside Arlington National Cemetery.

The shootings last year, all done with the same gun, did not injure anyone. The Marine Corps museum was targeted twice. Two windows were shot out at the Pentagon, and a Marine Corps recruiting station in Chantilly, Va., outside Washington was also targeted.

At the time, FBI officials suspected that the shooter had some sort of gripe against the Marine Corps.

Peter Carr, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney in the eastern District of Virginia, declined comment except to say that Melaku remains under investigation following last week's incident. FBI spokesman Andrew Ames also declined comment.

Melaku has a status hearing Thursday in Loudoun County, Va., on the grand larceny charges that accuse him in a spate of car break-ins and vandalism in Leesburg. He was arraigned in early June, and released on bail. After the Pentagon scare, more charges were added and he was held without bail.

The shootings started Oct. 17 at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, about 30 miles south of Washington. Days later, the Pentagon was hit. Then, the shooter targeted a Marine Corps recruiting station in Chantilly before again firing on the museum. The fifth shooting was discovered at a Coast Guard recruiting station near a sprawling outlet mall in Woodbridge. The buildings were within 40 miles of each other.

Melaku joined the Marine Corps Reserve in September 2007 and was assigned as a motor vehicle operator to a unit based in Baltimore. He was not deployed overseas.

Spokesman Lt. Col. Francis Piccoli said Wednesday the Marine Corps was in the process of trying to remove him from the service based on the grand larceny charges. Melaku has not tried to contest his removal, Piccoli said.

Melaku's attorney, Robert May, did not return a call seeking comment Wednesday.

Suspected Pentagon shooter to plead guilty to car thefts

WASHINGTON -- The man charged with firing shots at the Pentagon and other military targets plans to plead guilty to seemingly unrelated state charges in Loudoun County next month.

Court records show 22-year-old Yonathan Melaku was indicted Monday, and plans to plead guilty on Sept. 2 to state charges of two counts of grand larceny in Loudoun County for stealing from cars. Four similar counts were dropped.

Melaku is suspected in a series of overnight shootings at military facilities beginning in October 2010. He currently faces four counts related to shootings at the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico and the Pentagon.

Nobody was injured in any of the shootings.

Melaku was arrested last month after police spotted him in Arlington National Cemetery after dark acting suspiciously.

Federal prosecutors say they have a videotape of Melaku which shows the former Marine reservist shooting a gun out a car window near the Marine Corps Museum. In the video, prosecutors say Melaku describes the shootings.

Melaku's attorney, Robert May, has not speculated on a motive, but says Melaku does not have a grudge against the Marines.

Peter Carr, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, says once Melaku is released from state custody, he will make his first appearance in the Alexandria federal courtroom in connection with the shooting charges.
