Fairfax County General :
Fairfax Underground
Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
Progress is slow moving in Fairfax County. Too much of the delays are caused by politics and special interest groups who are more interested in their own agenda's rather than the good of the county.
Methinks they should have used the money on repair and repaving the Fairfax county Parkway. I guess some folks thought this interchange was bad. I only thought bad a couple hours a day maybe and wasn't in dire need of expansion. besides being a tree hugger I miss all them gotdamn trees. didn't the money for this redo come from a special federal allocation?
After watching MD and PA roads crews, I'd have to say VA is working at lightspeed in comparison. Shit, at least there's evidence of progress every week. Some of you people seem to think building overpasses and roads should take two hours.
@wally - you need a reality check - that intersection sucks almost 24/7, and has for over a decade and a half
@ shadow, the word you are searching for is "entitled", as in "The ppl of Fairfax County feel ENTITLED to have road construction finished in two hours" LoLz
i like how they're not actually reducing the backup, they're just putting it on the exit ramps. those exit ramps will be at a dead stop so long as those damn traffic lights are there. I'd say screw it and make it a cloverleaf

Def not a cloverleaf. The modified diamond interchange is adequate. Most traffic at that intersection is N/S. The reason why the backup exists is due to the smaller amount of traffic going E/W needing to get through the intersection. With a diamond, there will be more light cycles letting the E/W traffic to get on the parkway without delaying the N/S parkway traffic. This intersection is very similar to the Willard Road / Route 28 interchange (also a diamond); very few backups exist on the ramps from 28 to Willard.
I wish VDOT would do more diamond interchanges overall. They're far less expensive to build (vs. cloverleaf) and, when one of the roads carries less volume than the other, there's really no need. (See Westfields/28 vs. Willard/28 -- Westfields carries far more traffic than Willard and was made into a cloverleaf to accommodate it.)

And just to further emphasize this point - recall Willard when it was just a traffic light. Absolutely brutal. Despite the fact that there was far less E-W traffic, it caused major backups for the N-S. So Shadow's right - very analogous to Fair Lakes.
I have been arguing with VDOT in regards to the road barrier for the ffx county parkway, they are not willing to provide the reason for the road barrier not being installed. They have the nerves to install a new library at this location but not put a road barrier first before bringing the library in.
