Anyone else heard about this? Apparently FCPS is banning yoga pants and or all tight fitting clothing.

This is ridiculous. I'm glad that I'm a senior but this is still unfair regardless of whether it affects me. Where will the line be drawn? If yoga pants are banned (and tight fitting clothing) it will be a matter of opinion that has students getting suspended and before you know it there will be a case heading to court for straight A students whose clothes are too tight for the standards of an overage and out of touch administration. I don't condone immodest clothing but I'm not stupid either. I don't think there's anything wrong with yoga pants; they are a major part of my wardrobe, especially in the midst of a heavy work load that apparently is causing more and more stress and suicide to students (Race to Nowhere, anyone?). Who wants to wear tight ass skinny jeans when you've got three AP tests in one day... I mean really. If school stays this stressful, then you can be sure as hell that I'm going to keep wearing yoga pants. And I'm not even pulling any First Amendment janx in this argument. Who cares what this does to adolescent boys, they'll always be distracted.

This would be obsurd! this is just one step closer to them making us wear uniforms. im a senior as well and its just stupid. if girls like the way they look then its human nature to flaunt it. if ur a parent and u dont want ur teenage boys being distracted then send them to an all boys school.

The schools are way too lax as it is. At one middle school, the girls are supposed to wear skirts and shorts that are no higher up on their legs than the bottom of their hands when they have their arms extended down their sides. The girls cheat it, and flaunt around like cheap tricks, while the administration stays mum on the issue. These girls are even showing up with sweaters that barely cover their butts, and underneath them they're wearing nothing but tights (No pants). If you want to dress like that in college, that's fine, but what business does some 13 year old have walking around like that? I often wonder how many of these girls are going to end up pregnant before they get out of high school.

thank GOD i have already graduated because this is just insane. the schools are going to have so many issues with rebelling teens they are just digging their own graves. Apparently even boys are fighting for the cause b y wearing yoga pants in protest. If they think girls are inappropriate in yoga pants just wait until a teenage boy wears them...plus what if they gets boners in the middle of the school day? hint fcps - boys will be boys will be boys. whether girls wear yoga pants or not, testosterone filled teenaged boys will be distracted throughout the day even just with thoughts of naked girls. Either institute a uniform rule or drop it!

PICK YOUR BATTLES ADMINISTRATION! clearly you have more severe issues to deal with considering you have students in your county committing suicide...is yoga pants really the top priority?

Honestly, yoga pants may be tight but they are a great substitute for sweatpants or pajama pants. I'm an IB student, which means that I spend about 4 or 5 hours a night sleeping, and wake up with just enough time to throw on clothes and be out the door in the morning. Having yoga pants to throw on makes me feel less grimy and more put together during the day while at the same time being comfortable. It isn't like I go to school to flaunt my assets. This rule is just obnoxious. They should spend their time worrying about our education rather than worrying about our pants.

I don't think its fair to say that the way a 13 year old dresses will determine whether or not she gets pregnant. I'm 16 and determine to stay a virgin until i'm engaged and i wear yoga pants, and some mini skirts in middle school that i would never dream of wearing now. We're at the age of experimentation, most of it being with clothing styles. I don't see why fcps is trying to band our yoga pants. If they want to really control what their students wear then they should just institute a dress code because they're making it difficult for students to find things to wear. Where do we draw the line? Of course there will always be those girls who wear extremely low cut shirts and barely-there skirts but that's just how they will be. It's not fair to the vast majority of us who just want to be comfortable and are comfortable with their bodies. School officials are forgetting that even as teenagers we are sexual beings and they can't try to suppress it. Boys will think of girls in however which way they please regardless of what the girls are wearing. Girls should be taught to feel comfortable with their bodies, not told to constantly cover up to the point where they may feel ashamed of their body.

Also i'd like to point out this leaves voluptuous girls at a disadvantage. Most clothes they wear could possibly be categorized as "tight" in certain areas of their body. It seems that many of these rules are unfairly prejudiced to the girls who have stuff to "flaunt". I'm not saying thinner girls are less sexually appealing, but you see them getting away with more dress code violations than the girls who are more curvaceous. They'll be forced to wear extremely baggy shirts and jeans to cover the curves the school is so desperately trying to hide. I don't think thats fair, they'll lose their choice of fashion for an outlet of expression.

My student's school makes a big deal about the "dress code" at the beginning of the school year, then the administration does not enforce it. We see girls there with shorts and skirts that are WAY shorter than the rule allows for, and it seems like no one ever gets called on it.

If they aren't going to enforce it, why do they even have it? When kids see that the rule won't be enforced, it breaks down a bit of the authority.

And interestingly enough, it's the girls who should NOT be wearing the short shorts/skirts and ultra tight jeans. Some of them are rather fat.

The rates for both teen pregnancies and teen births declined in Virginia and across the nation until 2005. In 1995, the birth rate for Virginia teens was 48.4 per 1,000 females aged 15 to 19 years old. By 2005, this rate had decreased to 34.4 births per 1,000 females (15 to 19 years old), compared to the national average of 40.5 births per 1,000 females in the same age group.

However, in 2006, both the U.S. and Virginia experienced a slight uptick in birth rates, to 41.9 and 35.2 births per 1,000 females, respectively. In 2007, the United States teen birth rate continued upward while the Virginia rate decreased very slightly to 35.1. In 2008, the teen birth rates in both the U.S. and Virginia decreased to 41.5 and 33.5 per 1,000 females, respectively. Based on this 2008 rate, Virginia had the 18th lowest incidence of teen births among the 50 states. Relative to its peers, Virginia had a lower rate than North Carolina (49.4) or Tennessee (55.6), but a higher rate than Maryland (32.8). New Hampshire led the nation with only 19.8 teen births per 1,000 females.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, Virginia's teen pregnancy rate was among the mid-range of states in 2005: the 20th lowest rate in the nation at 61 pregnancies per 1,000 females aged 15-19. The national average in 2005 was 70 pregnancies per 1,000 female teens. North Carolina's rate was 76, Tennessee's rate was 79, and Maryland's rate was 65. The leading state was New Hampshire, with a teen pregnancy rate of just 33.

Within Virginia, teen pregnancy has generally been decreasing, with every region except the Southwest having a lower rate in 2009 than it did in 2000.

2009 regional data from the Virginia Department of Health shows that the Southside (61.8) and Hampton Roads (57.6) regions had the highest teen pregnancy rates per 1,000 females between the ages of 15 and 19, while the Northern (31.5) and Valley (38.1) regions had the lowest rates. In 2009 there were 12,283 pregnancies reported among teenagers in Virginia overall, or 45.5 per 1,000 females aged 15 to 19.

AND FYI parents. Dating at age 12 is associated with a 91 percent chance of being sexually involved before age 19, and dating at age 13 is associated with a 56 percent probability of sexual involvement during adolescence.

most of these public school kids dress like bums.
the way one dresses demonstrates their self image - one of respect for yourself or slovenliness. If you are slovenly in your personal habits, such as dress, this will be reflected in your school work. Yoga pants makes the wearer look like a tart.

Uh..."banning" ultra-tight-fitting clothes is not new at FCPS - it's been the standard for a long long time.

From our fave document, the SR&R:

http://www.boarddocs.com/vsba/fairfax/Board.nsf/files/89AJ5J4B825B/$file/R2613.pdf

=========
"...All students are expected to dress appropriately for a K-12 educational environment...Clothing should fit, be neat and clean, and conform to standards of
safety, good taste, and decency. Clothing that exposes cleavage, private parts, the
midriff, or undergarments, or that is otherwise sexually provocative, is prohibited..."

a) if yr looking at high school kids getting a hard-on cause they are wearing tight fitting clothes, then YOU are the one who need to be b&, not the clothes (preferably banned in the head with a 2x4)

b) you can force the kids to dress in matching burlap sacks, they are still gonna get the hots for one another

c) catholicschooler is a bit elitist

this is just further evidence of the trend toward sexualization of younger girls, and the very sort of attitude behind that sordid episode where Janet Jackson exposed her breast at the Super Bowl. Once you go down this road, there is no telling where it will end.

I have a simple solution to this problem and it will pay additional dividends as well.

Start requiring everyone to participate in a yoga class! Once something's required the students will protest against it. But...if everyone did start doing yoga everyone would be much more mellow and tolerant and relaxed and oh so comfortable in their own bodies that they wouldn't feel the need to flaunt their sexuality.

of course I guess if boys start wearing yoga pants their might be another issue to have to deal with.

hun, I'm gonna let you in on a cpl of secret

guys were into girls when I was in HS

guys were into girls BEFORE I was in HS (you could tell cause all that "Joanie Loves Chachi" type graffiti was still all over he school before they renovated it

you may want to THINK that the world is going to pot, or whatever, cause of what you see in the media

but the REAL NUMBERS dont lie

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/checkup/2010/12/teen_birth_rate_hits_record_lo.html

and yes, there has been a study noting a recent uptick in numbers

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/25/AR2010012503957.html

but that is only one study, and we are STILL at far lower teen pregnancy rates then like 50-100 years ago

back before Janet Jackson

LoLz

In all seriousness, these yoga pants are little more than leggings, it's fucking absurd that the school now has to step in and tell KIDS that they have to wear more than that to school.

What kind of shitbag parent would look at their 16 or 17 year-old daughter going to school dressed like this and say, "Yup. No problem there."

Now this is an issue totally worthy of protests, walkouts and web rants.

Some over-the-hill or never-seen-the-hill yenta teachers, abetted by some frustrated homosexuals who feel imtimidated by nubile and desirable young bodies have made it their pet peeve. Oh, what about the children?

The "children" are adolescent, the boys like the view, the girls with the shapely booties like the attention. What is to be learned? I guess these teachers, who for the most part claim to be liberals, prefer a repressed and bland dress code that will retard and criminalize the natural sexual thoughts and awareness of the young. Let them get their awakening by looking at web porn instead, great idea.

Where does the "SDS" stand on this one?

As a society, we're at a strange crossroads. On one hand, we are fully aware that the life of an unwed teenage mother is hell. We know the dangers that accompany irresponsible sex, from pregnancy to STDs. We complain about the amount of money the government spends on poor people who breed as much possible to maximize their welfare and foodstamps. There is still a stigma attached to being a single mother.

On the other hand, we've sexualized everything. We have useless whores like Paris Hilton and those Kardashian broads acting as role models. We have the cast of Jersey Shore sliming their way through the airwaves. Stores sell clothing and accessories to underage girls that would make a 23 year-old look like a whore. People complain that abstinence only education is not sufficient, but I doubt a lot of parents would be proud to say they give their 14 or 15 year-old daughter condoms.

Kids, especially teenagers, like to have control of something, but that something shouldn't be sex. Kids are too stupid to do it responsibly. Letting them dress in a sexually-provocative way sends the message, "You're not old enough to drive, vote, drink, or smoke, but by God, you're old enough to fuck."

I can count on one hand the number of times in my life I've been told I'm "too conservative," so I'm fine with this being one of those times. There's no way in hell I'd let my underage daughter leave the house dressed like that, and I'd hope that I taught her enough self-respect to not even want to.

My high school was kind of backwoods and redneck-y, but 75% of the girls who dressed like skanks in high school ended up pregnant, hooked on drugs, or stricken with some sort of STD. Don't get me wrong; plenty of girls were having sex, but none of them felt the need to dress like total whores.

Bingo. Something like this should never, ever be a school decision, but parents aren't doing their jobs. This goes right back to my argument of parents expecting the schools to raise their kids, but bitching about everything the school does to that end.

Kids are impressionable if nothing else. They see the skanks on the tee-vee dressing like low-budget prostitutes and getting showered with praise and affection. It's only natural they're going to think, "Hey, if those girls are dressing like skanks and getting the attention their daddies never gave them, it might work for me!"

First they wear yoga pants, then they send naked pictures of themselves to people who post them on the internet. Then they go to college, get tramp stamps, and discover a burning sensation when they pee. Shortly after, they'll end up with some equally-retarded douchebag, they'll squeeze out some kids, and before long she'll be the one complaining about the school's "draconian" dress code.

Part of the problem is that the parents actually approve of it. The parents were 60s era kids and were totally sexualized. Therefore, for the 15 year old daughter to go out and party and look like a tramp, its A-OK because mom did it too. In fact, mom might go out with the daughter and cougar it up for a night.

Face it. Morality. It does not exist any more - not to any extent.

Why is this country so fucking uptight about people and the way they dress?

Why all over the world people dress nicely and do not hide it.

But in America people make it a priority to dress like shit.

Dirty tshirt? No problem

Shitty washed out sweater? No problem.

It's not even a question of morality. I know kids are going to have sex with each other. But why would any parent allow their kids to leave the house to go to school wearing something that skin-tight? What's next, body paint?

I'm going to ignore your liberals and morality comment and say that the problem is, I think, that a lot of parents just don't want to be the grown-ups.

Dress Code:
We continue to have lots of our young ladies wearing second skin pants. These come in the form of tights, leggings, yoga pants, jeggings, and other similar leg covers. Students are welcome to wear these provided they wear shorts/skirts, or a shirt/top that reaches down to their fingertips. If students wear jeans with the very fashionable holes in them, the holes may not be above the reach of their fingertips. Shorts and Skirts must be of the length that fingers do not reach below the hem. Girls’ tops should provide coverage so that cleavage and underwear is not visible.

Our goal is simple. It is to provide an appropriate educational environment for all of our students. The clothes matter. We have been and continue to enforce our dress code. Please help us in supporting the simple dress code we have.

What if your daughter was a thalidomide baby and has little flipper arms? Her fingertips are around her tits.

A great loophole to be exploited.

If FCPS were to ban yoga pants AND tight fitting pants, wouldn't tight fitting pants include skinny jeans? Even some jeans are super tight around the butt. What are the girls supposed to wear, sweatpants?! If anything, the yoga pants are no comparison to the tight pencil skirts that have been in style. I've seen the girls at school when they dress up for sports or other events, and their dresses and skirts are extremely tight and too short. I don't think yoga pants should be the number one priority of clothing to be ban. Yoga pants are a comfortable pant, and give the girls an option of still looking decent and not a bum in sweatpants. Also, the pictures towards the beginning are over exaggerating. If FCPS were to ban yoga pants, there would be an uproar no doubt about it.

If you have a child who is 13 and are already worrying about their possible future adolescant pregnancy, you have some way bigger issues to be worrying about than if another 1000 13 year old girls are wearing tight pants.
I am a high school student and I know first hand that if you're ACTUALLY dressed like a slut (ex. crotch revealing skirts), people will call you a slut. Apperantly many adults here are under the impression that girls wearing revealing clothes will be to their social advantage by "flaunting" themselves. Sorry to be the one to break this to you, adults, but you're wrong. When things get tasteless, your children are way more brutal about it than you can imagine. If you're calling a girl a "tart" or "trashy", at least 5 of her peers have already said she looks like a whore, a slut, or a prostitute. Please relax, sit back and let these kids receive their own social punishment. All banning yoga pants is going to do is make more people wear them. (HINT: there are already Facebook events circling)

What parent would allow a young girl to wear these booty pants.

Enough.

Can we all say uniform?

A uniform is cheaper and the kids stay on track without looking at someone's crack.

The camel toe is too much for a young man to handle.

Let's get on with teaching. I am tired of preaching.

Alright let's just clarify a few things:

a) they are yoga pants, not "booty pants"
b) if you have an issue, don't let YOUR kid wear them.
c) anyone wearing yoga pants low enough to show their 'crack' is already breaking a school rule and should be punished for indecent exposure rather than their pants
d) there are many girls who are aware of this certain invention called UNDERWEAR. beleive it or not, if worn correctly, you don't have camel toe.

But I'll leave you with this, "Booty call pants": Go ahead and give your child a uniform. Dictate everything that they wear for their next 6 years. Just know that they will never learn how to appropriatley dress themselves until you give them the chance to try it. Too many kids that have gone to OLGC or other uniformed schools have ended up wearing more revealing clothing just because for the first time they can. Let your kid learn the hard way what is trashy and what is not.

well I think you have aquitted yourself well until now but the word you want is "argument," (without an "e").
I still believe, however, these type garments are best left in the yoga studio so that the outline of one's pudenda isn't clearly visible in an educational setting.

I wear yoga pants all the time and I don't wear them to show off my ass, i wear them because they are possibly the comfiest pair of pants I've ever worn. The people who are upset about girls wearing yoga pants are OBVIOUSLY insecure about there bodies and get mad at other people who look good in them. Comfort must take a backseat to certain standards of decency.

These little cowards did a dumb 5 minute walkout in support of overpaid teachers, now they are totally absent on a real issue that has effect on their female students.

The FCPS adminstration is basically calling any young woman who wears yoga pants inappropriate and they are insinuating that the male students are such little horndogs that they can't handle it. I would feel insulted.

This should be like bra burning was in the 70's. Where are the empowered and fearless females?

Tsk, tsk.
the young women are not inappropriate, the pants are.

as for males being "horndogs", their hormones are raging at this age, so that is a an unavoidable fact of life.

The bra burners were not high school girls; high schoolers have no rights anyway.

as far as fearless, "empowered females," these are children, and you will only put crazy thoughts in their miinds with that kind of talk. They should be focusing on their studies and not looking like tarts.

a lotta perverts and low-self esteem ppl seem to be VERY interested in what the kiddies are wearing these days.

Scroll up to what Sofia McKewen says on this thread - she's got the pulse of the what REALITY is all about on this issue

p.s. there was no actual "bra burning" in real life back in the 60's that's just a myth.

Please keep in mind that like any other article of clothing, yoga pants can be worn both appropriately and inappropriately. I know that my parents are up at the crack of dawn handing me my lunch and checking that I am dressed apppropriately when I leave the house before 7 am. This is not a school issue, it is a parental issue.

As my mother put it, "Parents these days are just too scared to fight with their kids. They don't want to be seen as an enemy, so they let their kids do and watch and wear things that they know aren't age appropriate then blame it on the school systems." When you start feeding, educating, and caring for every child in Fairfax county THEN you can decide what they wear. Until then, keep to what you know best and deal with your own kids. Nobody has the right to dictate how thousands of children dress.
