NOVEC vs. Dominion VA Power
Posted by: deckard ()
Date: March 09, 2011 06:08PM

I'm buying a house in Fairfax County (Alexandria, Rt. 1 corridor) and getting ready to set up accounts with the utility companies. Assuming both companies offer service where I am, what is your experience/recommendation regarding NOVEC and Dominion? Is one better than the other (I'm guessing rates will be comparable)? Any good/bad experiences with either? Any way to compare length/frequency of outages?

Thanks.

Do you have a choice bettween the two?

NOVEC rarely has outages, but I suspect that is because a lot of their transmission lines are underground. That is very area dependent. Are there visible electric poles in the neighborhood?

Dominion seemed to have a lot of little (1-5 min outages) outages in Centreville. NOVEC is also a cooperative, so if they make any money, they end up cutting a check to the customers ( http://www.novec.com/Customer_Services/CashbackFAQ.cfm ) . Dominion never does that, as all the extra profit goes to the shareholders.

It is likley that either Dominion Power or NOVEC will offer service at an address, but not both.

Virginia Power sucks balls. Novec is slightly better, if you want to call a "monopoly better." However, their customer service is more reasonable, considering they own you by the balls. Fuck both of them but esp VA Power.

Go with Dominion Power, that is, if you want lots of outages. I've had two of them today -- they apologized. Well, golllly.

I've had Dominion for years and I've never had an issue with them. My power is on when others is out. Convenient for when you want to brag on the internet that your power is still on when others is out...

... and they can't turn on a computer to read it. What a brilliant waste of time.

I've had NOVEC for 15 years, Dominion prior to that. I have found NOVEC very good, very responsive. If I were to have a choice, there would be no question for me.

You do not have a choice of provider. Electric utilities in VA are regulated monopolies.

Utilities in VA are racket.

Even if you get NOVEC they are a co-op and just buy from Dominion a a negotiated rate.

And yes you will not get a choice.

You only have a choice if both run lines though your neighborhood (not likely) where you would ask one utility to disconnect their service and pay the other to put their wires in place. It's not really worth it.

You don't get to choose. Whichever one has that location is who you buy your power from.

NOVEC is the best. The respond quickly if an outage. Very professional and they always call after the fix if you have called in to report the problem. Have had them for over 35 yrs and I can speak highly of them. They care and work really hard to solve an issue.

Back in the area after years abroad. My NOVEC bill seems high compared to what my VA Power bill used to be. NOVEC charges a $15.00 monthly service charge before you have even turned a light on. Instead of a $45.00 bill - mine's always $60.00. Seems too high for a single person in a medium sized apartment.

Be grateful for your $60 bill- I lived in an apartment in Manassas that used NOVEC- my first monthly bill was over $400! In 2 months- my bill was up to $900- and I rarely used the AC or washer and dryer and was working 2 jobs so was never home!

Turns out the apartment complex was billing us residents for the power being used lights in the hallway!! Never did get my money back from that!

That doesn't sound unreasonable after an absence of several years. And NOVEC is the best. In over twenty years we've never lost power for more than two hours - and that's rare.

#1 when did NOVEC build a nuclear plant? they didnt, are just reselling power
it's not even legal to have a power plant in NOVA - DUH DUH DUH

#2 price per joule of energy is published - though you avoided that topic
Domininian is cheaper then Pepco

#3 i'm always wondering if all the new condos and luxury housing in
southern fairfax (the ones funded by bull-o-va gov hiring illegals)

will end up using more power and water than can be served: and since they
are paying with "gov printed checks" that the whole power system doesn't
just collapse
