There are dozens of vehicles within the Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department that are being driven to and from homes. Many of these vehicles are unmarked and are routinely taken outside of the county. These people that drive county vehicles to Maryland and southern Va don't respond to emergencies. This costs thousands of dollars a month. Ambulances are going out of service but mismanagement and abuse continues with fire and rescue department management.

I wonder why a firetruck is necessary to go to the grocery store with what looks like a full crew. I see this quite a bit. And oft times they park in the fire lane when not on a call but shopping for groceries.
Why not send a few folks to the grocery store for food in a car or truck?
Is this practice done so they can get some fresh air and get out of the fire station?

No, the reason they go to the store in the firetruck with 4 people is because the unit is still in service. If they were to send 1 or 2 people to the store in a car, they would have to place the fire truck out of service and it would not be able to respond to calls. The morale of the story, the crew travels as a crew all day. They don't split up to get dinner or for any other projects that need to get done. If one person goes somewhere, everyone does.

Seeing a fire truck at the Grocery store or at a school track doesn't bother me a bit. It can just as easily be dispatched from there as the fire house.

You sir, are either an idiot or just trying to stir up dust. Usually the only people on duty during a 24 hour shift are the ones necessary to staff a medic unit (2) or a engine/truck (3 or 4). No one else is sitting around the station with time to go shopping. As the poster above said - the crew stays together for 24 hours. They cook their meals together, eat together, work out at a gym together, and shop together. And everything they do when they are out of the station is done while "on duty", carrying radios and within a short distance of their vehicle.
It is not uncommon to get a call while in the grocery store - they leave what they had gathered in the cart and all head out.
The fire lane comment is funny. Who do you think that lane is for? let me think.... oh yeah - the FIRE department. If the grocery store is on fire, the engine is conveniently placed, eh? And if the store is not on fire, the fire lane is a close enough to get to in the event of a call.

I have an idea. How about you do your grocery shopping on your own damn time. I know some people may find this hard to believe, but I actually go to the grocery store on the hours I am NOT working for my employer. If I feel like cooking something at work to eat for lunch or dinner, I go to the store BEFORE my shift starts and store the groceries in the fridge. I find it hard to believe that firehouses don't have refridgerators. And, let's be honest. Most times these crews are at grocery stores they are scoping out hero hunnies.

I think the OP just wants the local station to take a closer look at the higher-ups and how they use the resources that are so scarce these days. There should be some transparency and accountability. If its left up to those in charge, like in DC as we are seeing, there isn't really any motive to change those behaviors.
As far as the grocery shopping goes, I will give a little latitude to the guys on the front lines. But it isn't a requirement of their job, so it really shouldn't be a point to argue. Try to focus on issues that are central to your job and not the peripheral stuff - makes you look petty. Not being allowed to go to the grocery store while you are on the clock is not worth your breath and really, there isn't any danger of having that "Perk" taken away, unless one of you decides to take a truck out for a spin in the middle of the night with some chicks and gets busted for a DUI (different county).
The problem here is that you guys are so willing to fight at teh drop of a hat, like your rights are being eroded. You have one of the strongest Unions with the most public support, just focus on your job and keep letting your Union buy your influence, because writing on a message board doesn't do your cause much good, it just makes you look like petulant children and doesn't curry the public's favor. You only isolate your view when you come across like an a-hole to others that "sound like we've never done shoft work". Please.

When my house burns, I will call a firefighter knowing full well that they are more likely to survive doing their job than the guy that picks up my trash.

I don't think this person understands that the fire HOUSE is a house where fireman stay, sleep and eat 24hrs a day. It's not an 8hrs at the office and then close up at 5pm and home for dinner.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are cooked and eaten at the firehouse and that requires groceries for the firehouse.
I suppose we could hire some service to bring groceries to the fire house every couple of days, but I don't want my taxes dollars waste on that. Let the fireman get their own groceries to the stock the fire house when there is not a fire instead of sitting on their asses or banging out some local slut.
