Cheapest place for a flat tire repair?
Posted by: bonoz ()

Cheapest places I have found that do a patch repair and rebalance/mount are Fair Oaks Sears and Monro Brakes at the intersection Lee highway and 50 in Fairfax.

They are charging $20.

Anyone know a place that charges less than that?

This thread interests me. I've been to a few tire shops recently and was kind of taken aback when looking at their "board" prices for the fees they charge. Places such as Good Year / Gemini charge about $29 to fix a flat. I do realize it costs money to hire tire techs and it probably takes about the same amount of time to fix a flat as it does to mount a couple of tires ... but, wow! That price is nuts.

The best (and free) tire repairs are for those tires that you purchased from Costco. The fix tires that you've purchased from them. I had 2 repairs done for free last year. To me, that's the best deal going. I'll try and buy all my future tires from Costco because of what they offer.

Traditional tire plugs are good for a solid 130 mph.

fix-a-flats are junk, they're useless. the chemicals contained in it will start eating away the thin layer of protection inside which will eventually start corroding the tire.

string plugs are also crap, they almost always leak afterwards, then again they do have their moments where it works.

patches are the best, they don't void the warranty of the tire and it's a permanent fix from the inside-out.

Burke Centre Auto will charge $29 for patches which will include balancing of the flat tire and installation.

One thing to watch for:

My wife got a nail in her car about a year ago. We took it to Merchants up on Route 29 near the Korean market - Super H Mart.

The folks at Merchants would NOT do a patch. The nail was on the "shoulder" of the tire (it was borderline, but I opted not to chance it). If you get a nail there, be prepared for most dealers and repair shops to refuse to do the repair.

As it turned out, the tire had only about 10000 miles left on it, so I opted to replace it - as if I had a choice.

I think I got my tires done at Costco. So if they do free stuff like that that might just be the best option.

Good to hear. I've kept my tire receipts from them. However, if you don't have yours, they can probably pull them up by your membership number as proof. Good luck to you.

Monro is $20?

I paid $36 yesterday after driving over a screw -- perhaps because it included a re-mount and balance of the punctured tire. But they did do a good, proper job with inside patch and plugging of the puncture hole.

Just tires charged me $30 or so for a simple repair, and imagine my delight when I walked out the next morning after the repair and saw the tire completely flat. I put the spare back on, went to Just Tires, and the retard--and I do mean retard--"general manager" told me that "old tires tend to let air through the rubber," and seemed to be satisfied with blowing me off with that explanation.

?

I asked him to just PUT THE DAMN TIRE IN THE WATER TANK!, and there it was, the original hole, not patched properly.

they grudgingly re-repaired the tire, and then I had to argue with them to re-balance the freaking tire, after they had removed it from the wheel.

I can't tell you where to go, but I can sure tell you where NOT to go...Just Tires on Maple Ave in Vienna...

Buying the kit from Auto Zone & doing it yourself (or someone doing it for you)may be the cheapest But...I just called Walmart, & they quoted $10 for plugging unless you have to replace the tire.

$5, plug kit at auto zone, I plugged a punctured tire last week and I'm talking less than a 1/4 inch, nail type puncture. No problem! Now, I got a 1 and 1/2 inch gash on a different tire, I dont know what I ran over, but you gonna need to plug it with a tree, maybe a patch or a new tire, I dont really know. Hopefully, it can be patch and driven safely. Waiting for feed back

Another vote for AK Auto - Abe and crew are fantastic. They stress honesty and education and I've found that to be true.

Took my car in to have heat shield rattle repaired - they took off offending piece and told me I would be wasting my money on a weld job and all needed parts were covered. No charge. While I was there, I asked about a timing belt change on my Subaru which I knew was coming up soon - they advised me to wait a bit as it was not quite ready and I could get some more miles on it. Had some other minor work done while I relaxed at the Starbucks across the street. I've also had some good car upkeep tips from them.

I had a nail in the center of my tire once. I went to TrakAuto bought a plug kit. Took the tire off. Used the roughing tool two punches in the hole. Used the sewing thing with the plug. Pushed the plug into the tire with glue on it. Wait for it to dry and then put air in the tire.

It took about thirty minutes and cost me $7 dollars. I had the tire for years and no leak or problem.

I was surprised how easy it was to fix the tire.

My Grandfather got a tire patch kit from TRAK AUTO, too. He also purchased a Farmers' Almanac from CROWN BOOKS and a Chia Pet from DART DRUG... All, um, circa 1980? Good to know that TRAK AUTO has risen from the grave to service NoVA again.

I have my vehicles at construction sites all the time and constantly pick up the old nail in the tire gig. The best plug I have found is from tractor supply store. It's the one you plug heavy equiptment tires with. I have one tire with 5 of those plugs in it for the last year and is still holding air. Plugs work just fine if you plug it and fill it up with air real quick.

For the record, I think people should know....

There's a difference between a plug and a patch job. A plug is where they stick that brown thing in the hole on the outside. A patch is where they take the tire off the wheel and patch it from the inside.

I just had my tire plugged in Manassas for $10. The patch was $25 I believe, but if you're willing to spend $25 for a patch, you might as well get a new tire.

How do you figure? Better tires run $100 or more. Some will argue that you need to replace two or possibly all four at the same time. If you have tires with 3-4 years left on them repairs make sense.

And frankly if you can get a good repair job done for $20-30 from a place that you trust, why would you be looking for a lower price? Seems like it makes more sense to skip a couple of Starbucks Lattes than to risk the possibility that the cheap repair job failed.

Tires are expensive. Make sure they patch it from the inside.

$20-30 is the going rate for the last 20years regardless of where I've called home.

Of course, before Dick and Bush killed the truck and the V8 engine, I used to drive big nobby tired trucks where it was a bitch to mount and balance tiers.

If the nail is near the sidewall, you need a new tire.
