Abandoned car on my street
Posted by: Hornchurch ()
Date: December 29, 2010 08:41AM

There has been a pickup truck with Maryland tags on my street since before Thanksgiving that has not moved once. Where can I report it to have it taken away or at least a warning put on it? I wasn't sure if I should call the police non-emergency number or not.

Thanks for your help!

This is the best place to do it. We will make sure it's taken care of, okay?

If it's a public street with no sort of "no parking" restrictions, you may be out of luck. But call the non-emergency # and see what they say.

Why is it such a big deal? Is it in front of your house, which prohibits guests or yourselves from parking there or is it in front of a neighbor's house? A neighbor of my mom's parks his boat on the street that runs along the side of her house and it's not a big deal.

Warhawk - There's no house next door, just a grassy area that leads up to the next road. It's not a huge deal, but if it's abandoned that means I'll have to look at it for years to come and I don't want to do that.

Ahhh...I didn't think of the abandoned angle (even though it's in your post's title, duh), I was thinking more of a temporary situation. You don't want to look at some rusted out piece of shit 3 years from now. Call the non emergency number.

Hmm... Maryland tags in Virginia... probably left by some illegal who lives in VA but could only get a license and registration in MD thanks to their lax laws.

Do call the cops on this.

Could be a stolen car dumped. I would flatten the tires and call the cops.

Call the county and report an abandoned vehicle. They should tag it and give the owner a week or two to contact the county to claim that it isn't abandoned.

Do w/e ya have to do to find the owner I guess. Maybe find a way to claim it yourself and sell it/fix it up.. legally of course.. don't just take it and do w/e you want in case it was stolen, then YOU stole it as well.

Unattended/Abandoned vehicles on public roads
•Vehicles left unattended for 10 or more days may be towed.
•40 days after being towed, the vehicle can be declared abandoned. The vehicle can then be sold/disposed of.
•Trailers are considered vehicles in this statute.
•Police will enforce.

I had the same problem a few years back where someone abandoned their car in our parking lot. Wasn't much we could do since it had current registration and an inspection sticker. The oil slick on the way to the parking lot told us it wasn't going anywhere again. After a few weeks the license plates somehow disappeared and it was eventually towed away to the boneyard.

Pull off the plates and throw them away. A car parked on the street without plates can be towed. Yes its illegal but it was probably an illegals car so its fine.

I called my HOA and they took one away. The car had a baby seat and had a fast food cup in the cup holder. It never moved for three months so I had it hauled away. Never saw it again in my neighborhood.

I'd call the cops non-emergency and tell them about it anyway.
Once in S. Arlington a car was parked on my street for a week
and none of my neighbors knew anything about it so I dropped
the dime. The cops found out it was stolen and abandoned so they
took care of it quickly and thanked me for the call.

We had an abandoned vehicle one time in a parking lot of an office building. I heard it sat there for 6-months. Guess what we found in the trunk? A 6-month old corpse.

There is a late 1970s early 80s Camaro or Trans Am (rusted brown color) that has been sitting on Green Trails Blvd and Skylemar trail for about 6 years, never moved. HOA says they can't do anything due to it being on a publicly owned road. What an eyesore.

As long as it has valid tags and inspection (and no emissions since its that old), it can sit as long as it needs to. Owner is probably trying to save to restore it.

On Brookfield Corporate Drive in Chantilly down past the Post Office there are TONS of trailers/trucks/buses/cars that have all been there for months without moving. There's a boat on a trailer that's been there for probably 8 years hasn't moved tags on the boat are 2 years old. But there many MANY trucks/trailers/buses/cars that have not moved for well over 10 days.

I started this thread ages ago and never followed up. I called the police non-emergency number, and they placed a notice on it to move it within 24 hours or be seized. They moved it within a few hours.

The only thing you can do is see if tags or any inspection/emissions stickers are expired. If this is so you could call non-emergency police and they will come ticket it.

As long as it is within 1 foot of the curb, 20 feet from an enternace/exit to a driveway, not blocking a fire hydrant, and not in private property than it is legally parked.

Take the initiative and go out and remove the license plates from all the vehicles you are concerned about, let the air out of all the tires, smash the windshields and the taillights, then see what happens.

it's worth $600 - $800 in scrap metal (aluminum is valuable didn't you know?)

the local junkers lie to you and say it's worht nothing or ask you to pay them

matter of fact jack: reason why you can "donate your car" and get a tax write-off is because: it has value

the gov is helping these theives cover up , as gov usual
