School Closing Text Alerts
Posted by: Cell Phone User ()

Is there any service that offers text message alerts to be sent out when schools are closed/delayed due to bad weather in this area?

I checked all the news websites and they offer text services but none of them seem to offer school closing alerts to be sent out that way.

Does anyone know of another service that sends out text alerts for Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, etc schools?

Thanks

Thanks for the double post, dipshit.

Cell Phone User,

The Fairfax CEAN (Community Emergency Alert Network) mailing list provides school and government closure information, but is not as real-time as I'd like:
https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/cean/

FCPS's own "Keep In Touch" mailing list is probably exactly what you're looking for:
http://www.fcps.edu/kit/

Not sure if they provide SMS (text) alerts, but you could always http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_SMS_gateways

No problem. Some jackass was spamming the thread in off topic, guess I was expecting more of a reliable response here. Thanks for lowering my expectations.

No services provide real time text updates around here? That is unbelievable. Out in Warren County in the sticks they have a service (granted it costs $20 a year) that sends out text alerts immediately to notify whoever signs up for it. I cant believe in a major metro area nobody provides a similar service so people dont need to get up at the crack of dawn and sit around the TV or computer and wait to see if school is closed or delayed.

What a whiner. So you have to get up early every once in a while - it is your responsibility as a parent. Government will not do everything for you, you gotta step up to the plate sometimes.

Call Fairax county schools and ask them what time in AM they choose to close a school or not. *I think it may be 5AM?

Im not a parent. My fiancee is a teacher and she gets up at 5:30-6 every morning. If she just gets a text saying school is closed then she doesnt need to get out of bed and can go right back to sleep.

My sincere apologies that some people have trouble getting back to sleep again once they have gotten up out of bed and turned on the computer or tv to find out if they need to go to work. She doesnt get enough sleep as it is right now. If I can help her out on snow days by finding a way for her to get more sleep then it benefits both of us.

Thanks for the link about the PWCS notification system.

Uh oh, you've pissed off our resident moose! You better duck-and-cover while you still have the chance!

As a bit of advice as well, just visit FCPS.edu on your mobile device in the morning, then checkout the Emergency Announcements. Also, FCPS now has a twitter account/feed, so if you have that capability on your cell phone, then try it (http://twitter.com/fcpsnews).

Also, here's NBC4's mobile news alerts:

I used to be a teacher in FCPS and this is an absolutely true story.

Years ago, when there was a late opening teachers were still expected to show up at the normal time and in those days sometimes the school system would initially announce a late opening then to update with a closure for the day.

So one day, I was at school on time, when there was a late opening, then a school closed announcement was made. The phone in the office is ringing off the hook, with parents trying to be sure they knew what was going on. One mother called and asked if schools were closed, the secretary said yes they were closed. She then asked if Hybla Valley, the elementary school where this all took place, was closed and the secretary patiently said yes Hybla Valley was closed also, since it is in Fairfax County. The mother, not being totally satisfied with the answer then asked "Does that inlcude, Miss Montgomery's room, room 18?"!!!! The secretary could barely answer she was laughing so hard.

The Hybla Valley story is probably true. Consider the education of the parents of the kids that go to that school.
