New grocery store coming to Vienna [The Fresh Market]
Posted by: ITRADE ()
Date: December 08, 2010 12:23PM

The Fresh Market - to be located in the old spot where Hancock Fabrics and/or Thats Amore used to be. My guess is that they take both spots.

A coworker down in RTP told me that its better than average grocery stores but less pricey/pretentions than Whole Foods.

A relative characterized it as Wegmans in miniature.

edit by Cary: Added "[The Fresh Market]" to subject line for clarity

It is a great store. I actually worked in the original Fresh Market while in college back in the 80's.

There is another thread on here that stated they were going to open up in the old Giant store in Fairfax City. Still waiting for that to happen.

That sounds too good to be true, especially for a space that's languished empty for what must be at least 2 years now.

Since it's Vienna, I'm betting on a bank, mattress store or carpet shop.

Yeah, I've been in a Fresh Market a few times. Good selection and upscale atmosphere, but way overpriced. Should appeal to the demographics that live in the Vienna area.

Another grocery store? You mean in the spot that would be across the street from Giant? Let's see, we have a Giant in Vienna. a Whole Foods in Vienna, a Safeway in Vienna and a Giant in nearby Oakton. Splendid idea!

We really need a *real* store like a Kohl's, a Wal Mart, something. It is a giant pain to have to race to Target for a pair of jeans for your kid.

ITRADE may be half right: it's a good grocery and far less pretentious than a Whole Paycheck store. But the weighty pretentiousness is probably a factor of where the store is located. In the tidewater area, you can't really be pretentious. The Williamsburg and Richmond patrons try to, but they live in dead cities like Williamsburg and Richmond so it's epic fail despite their Volvos.

I did appreciate the Fresh Market for the ability to purchase small amounts of staples from bulk bins. It's great for single folks or people without much storage at home. Funny how buying from bulk bins is considered a feature of upscale markets these days. Remember when Giant offered that? It was the best.

I have to agree with Mary C. Another yuppie grocery store? This area is getting ridiculous. It's like CVS and Starbucks. We really need yet another overpriced grocery for the yoga pants, Peg Perego, and BMW assholes?

Tosco or Tesco from UK is another one that might be coming here.

Tesco? OMFG that would be wonderful... IF they had similarly-priced cheap alcohol. Tesco's bottom shelf of booze is a sight to behold.

Tesco fueled several of my trips through Scotland. 99 pence for a 3 litre bottle of rank, highly alcoholic cider. Gallons of cheap cider and a few boxes of generic Tesco brand digestives can keep you alive for weeks. And regular!

Most Krogers are dirty and run down and make Shoppers look upscale.

don't know where you've been my friend. All that I've been exposed to are nice with great bakeries, produce, and precooked food. Sorry you've had a bad experience.

Probably, Charlottesville or in the Shenandoah - places like Winchester, Luay, etc. We shopped at one in New Market....wasn't too bad, but it was a step down.

There's one in Duck or Corolla. Its pretty dumpy.

I've been fortunate with my exposure. I actually prefer the Krogers to Martins (Ukrops). I won't ask you about your experience with Winn Dixie!! ha

Just wait until you can go there to buy a fifth of Smirnoff or Jack Danies.

Free market booze is a great thing. Sales in California on alcohol are even greater things.

Reminds me of an exchange I had with a Red Dot store keeper in Myrtle Beach while buying a bottle of vodka. He was reassuring by saying that one is not an alcoholic if one have a martini glass. Words to live by!!!

Do they still have that asinine rule of serving booze only in the mini bottles?

For those of you longing for a Kroger in NoVa, guess what? They were here probably before Giant and Safeway. I don't remember where all of the locations were, but we used to shop at the Kroger at Rt. 50 and Graham Road in Falls Church in the early 60's. That store (admittedly miniscule by today's standards) after it was a Kroger, a slot racing car establishment, and has been, for probably about 30 years, been the Harvest Moon chinese restaurant (across Rt. 50 from Loehmann's Plaza).

Kroger bailed on the NoVa market--probably not a good move in retrospect.

Yes, the Safeway on Maple in Vienna has closed (replaced by...another drugstore...Walgreens) but I was referring to the Pan Am (revamped) Safeway. I still contend that to add another grocery store to the mix is ridiculous and redundant.

Welcome to Vienna! World Capital of Dry Cleaners, Banks, Mattress Stores, Pharmacies, Nail Salons, Grocery Stores and Doctors' Offices!

I refuse to go the Pan Am Safeway. Crowded, unkept and understaffed.

Don't forget Magruders in Vienna too. I read that Walmart is opening smaller format stores. That would be something slightly different.

Speaking of overcrowded, dirty and understaffed, how could I forget Magruders? I wonder how that place stays open, especially since their demographic (old/elderly/practically housebound) is dying off...and they cater only to seniors living alone. Avoid Magruders, especially if you are shopping for a family. If you want the tiniest bottles of condiments produced, Magruders is your store. No warehouse packs here, folks!

Stop being a snob. I love Magruder's. Its easy to get and out of, has everything I need and no I'm not a senior and I have a family. Waddle through your paid for membership, to shop at Costco's with the other cattle to get your warehouse sized condiment jars of Kirkland mayonnaise and 1000 rolls on TP.

Its a major drag at Pan Am Safeway to go in there after 9 pm when they go to 1 cahsier. Lines get oh so long and yet its been this way forever. Some Safeway numbnuts can't figure they do good business after 9pm. I always exit now if I see line down the aisle

Magruders just closed a location at Lee Hwy and Graham in Falls Church. I was sad, although I suspect not to many other people will be. Sorry to see it go, I'd rather not pay a 20 percent markup for mood lighting. Agreed Safeway is awful.

" My guess is that they take both spot"

Agreed
Now one can walk or drive by and see the interior of both businesses has been gutted for a combined large facility. Construction appears to be actively underway. TFM website has also listed a Branch St store coming soon.

If it is anything like a miniature Wegman's then I am totally stoked about TFM coming to Vienna. If Safeway and Giant went away permanently I would not miss them. Wegman's, Trader Joes and Whole Foods would be fine with me.
