Settling into Centreville
Posted by: CMM ()
Date: December 04, 2010 07:10PM

Hello there

Where does someone go to meet people in this community, I'm not into bars or churches for that matter. I'd just like to interact with the community more as I settle into the area. Is there a local coffee shop or cafe?
I moved here from a small town of 10,000 so this is a bit different to say the least, and of course in a community of 10,000 it's hard not to know everyone.
In any event if there is such a meeting place where the locals meet for coffee etc I'd appreciate the info.

sorry but given your background you will probably hate it here and might find it hard to meet people.

When I lived in Centreville, I used to also wait for the weekend nights - usually about 10 or 11 P.M. Usually, about that time, the Fairfax County Police has their chopper flying over the area with the search lights on. These events can be played out two different ways.

1) You can install extra locks on your doors and windows - out of fear. Or,

2) You can go outside and run around your neighborhood and have the lights from the helicopter zone in on you - and you can attempt to out-run them just for the excitement.

Enjoy Centreville!! Olé !!!!

Hahahahha Love it. The chopper idea works.

I don't speak Korean or ebonics, but I should probably learn. Least I can't say there will be in culture shock from moving here.. wouldn't know which culture to be in shock from.
I do like it here though. The traffic is ugly. About the only time we had traffic jams in the little town I moved from was when some farmer was driving his tractor down a main road and couldn't go faster than 25mph. So the first traffic jam I encountered on route 66, for a split second I caught myself thinking...wonder how far up ahead the tractor is that's causing this mess....

Being a middle aged female out running a chopper isn't going to be easy though. But I'll give it a shot. if that gets boring I'll go back to playing video games.

Oh the costco eh? I'm going to check it out. thanks

Yeah, I've lived in C'ville for over 20 years and I am not aware of a general hangout/meeting place. Everyone seems to move around in their own cliques (usually by race/ethnic and income groups) and generally not eager to talk to someone they don't know.

In my experience your best chance of meeting people is going to be via some type of program-club-association of common interest. If you have kids, it will be via PTA, volunteering at schools, meeting your kids friends parents, meeting parents of your kids fellow athletes... If you like the outdoors you can meet people by joining hiking/kayaking clubs, getting involved in rec sport leagues - that sort of thing. You could find places to do volunteer work or coaching - generally an easy way to meet people. Churches, history and civic associations - they usually love to have new members.

A lot of people get into various social networks through colleagues at work - of course if you are like me the last thing you want to do is hang out with anyone from work. And although it invariably takes a long time, if you live in the same neighborhood for years one does eventually find a few neighbors that are sociable.

What town did you move here from?

I've lived in Centreville for my entire life. This used to be a real small town (well Centreville isn't technically a "town", we are an unincorporated community). Western Fairfax County was real country not too long ago.

Moved here from Zachary, La which is about 15 miles north of Baton Rouge, LA. All in all this is a nice area and I'm enjoying the cultural diversity. It'll start feeling like home When I can go somewhere without getting lost.

I depends on how far south you are talking about. If you're talking about those who have paid $6,000 (each) to ride across the Rio Grande in the back of a rented U-Haul truck where the inside temperature has reached 140 (F) degrees, then, those types of southern people should not be welcome. There's already too many of them hanging out in front of the Centreville library looking for day labor type of work.

Now, if you mean "southern" as those who enjoy crawfish and sweet tea, I'm with you there. Nice people.

That place is a "has been". Even with the "for sale" signs out in front of it, I'll bet it will be another 10 years before the property gets sold. The economy will have to get back on its feet first. Then, I'm sure we'll see another church being built on that site. In a way, that would be a bit ironic - going from a rumored porn set to a church site. LoL. Meanwhile, the stores of it being haunted and the questions about what really went on there will continue. Answers to those questions will never get resolved. Though, I did see a Fairfax County police officer parked in front of the facility on Rt. 29 just last week. Not sure what his purpose was. Maybe, he just pulled over a speeder at that location. Maybe he had a report of prowlers at Filmdex? Who knows? Too many unanswered questions.

+1, Preach on.

I have to admit that I've always liked being around our Nation's Capital, and it really is a unique place. I had a lot of great experiences growing up here, but after a while you get tired of all the garbage.

If I get enough money in the near future, I'll keep the place here just so I can keep my job options open relative to D.C., but I definitely need to take-up residence somewhere else in the meantime. A few of my original, long-time neighbors have taken that dual-residency approach, and it seems to be the only thing keeping them around here.

I'd like a house somewhere in the tropics (South Florida or the Bahamas), one in Alaska, and one overseas. Damn, I need to bring in the money, though lol. Oh well, everyone needs to have a dream, right?

1) No. Nice try though.

2) There is nothing wrong with Virginia. It's Fairfax County that I can't stand. I'm not moving far...you only have to travel about 20 minutes West on 66 and you are in a whole different world. That's where I'm moving to (Fauquier or Warren).

That's why us intelligent ones who move further out, choose gated communities. More tranquility and less cut-through traffic. Plus, no soliciations allowed. And, we don't have to look at those lines of illegals lining up to work for a contractor to perform day labor activities to feed themselves and their families.

warren county over Faq county for sure. I might even head way down 81. down in Smyth county, maybe work at the scary looking coal plant there, and maybe live in the beautiful trailer parks just next door to said coal plant.

Scary but peaceful down there. Good huntin though, good huntin!

Fairfax is not the coolest fax in Virginia. Halifax is better. Centreville in my opinion is horrid. Way too many Asians and foreigners. No Asians and foreigners in Smyth county.

Sounds like Paradise. Got a nice big lake? And golf course? And only well-to-do Honkys as far as the eye can see?

That would be Paradise

Since it's so close to Washington, must be a lot of Republicans AND DEMOCRATS (liberal ones) ;) Hell, I don't blame em. I spent a lot of time on Kennedy's yacht myself, pondering all the injustices in the world while playing with my hot little secretary. ;)

Yes, it's paradise. The thing is, the further out you go, the less Liberals there are. In my precinct alone, we voted 60% to 40% in the 2008 election. 60% of the vote went Republican. 40% went to Obama & crew.

Yes, Most definately - we need such a sheriff that is foward-thinking. As it is, we currently have an Mayberry RFD-style police department. I'm thinking someone along the likes of "Sheriff Joe" of Arizona might be the type of M.O. we're looking for in a law enforcement officer.

To the guy who said Fauquier is becoming the new Fairfax - are you serious? Have you actually been to Fauquier County recently? It's nothing but farmland.

The population of Fauquier County is 68,000. The population of Fairfax County is over 1,000,000. And Fauquier has more land than Fairfax.

Fauquier county is beautiful country. I remember when Wal-Mart wanted to build a store in Warrenton. It took plenty of time and fighting to get their store approved.

The large acerage farms are beautiful. People raise horses, and lots of other fine animals. Plus, the people are un-pretentious. You could see someone wearing dirty overalls and a plaid shirt, yet have millions in the bank. Meanwhile, people in Fairfax are spending their last dollars to drive higher-end BMWs and carry Michael Kors handbags.
