Good place to sell jewelry?

Where would a good place to sell some jewelry be, preferably around the Reston/Herdon/Vienna area? Not a pawn shop, but a real jeweler.
I figure with something like a watch, there's a brand and all that so Ebay might work well. But with a diamond ring or necklace, nobody knows the quality, or if it's real, so it's better to go to a physical shop that can appraise it and authenticate it. I want a shop that is good and reputable, and will pay the best possible prices for what we have. Any recommendations?

Jewelers aren't much better than pawn shops.
I administered my parents' estate and had to have some jewelry appraised. Example: One diamond ring appraised at $18K and when asked, the guy offered me $500. I went to other jewelers who agreed with the appraisal, but the top offer was $800.
Jewelry, even good stuff, seems to have little resale value.
Rather than give the stuff away to strangers, I gave it to my daughters-in-law.
