Need some advice on what jobs are hiring?
Posted by: Who's Hiring? ()

I have two years at a university, but I dropped out. I want to get some experience, any good jobs hiring? I really need some help. I don't want to be a waiter, does anybody know if their company is hiring in the area?

No. And if they are, the people that work there have people that need jobs too. Try temping and working a crappy evening retail/waiting job and pay your dues like everyone else.

Temping is a good way to work your way into a full-time job.

Temping is a good way to make good bucks - it's all I do (albeit I have degrees in Computer Science and a spouse who provides dyn-o-mite health insurance).

...and jobs don't hire. Employers hire people to fill positions, and when you have one you then have a "job."

Without a college degree, in about a decade, you might as well move to China and get a job working on a rice paddy because there wont be anything left for you in this "service economy" other than a minimum wage job that you wont be able to afford to live off anyway.

Sign up to sub teach for FCPS.

Once you have been approved to sub (current employees have priority), try to get hired for the school bus training program. You should be studying for the CDL learners permit while FCPS is conducting the background check for you to sub teach.

Get the CDL learners permit.

Get the CDL from the bus driver training program. You are paid to do this.

Pay for the medical card yourself. If you don't, you are qualified only to drive a school bus.

Leave FCPS with the CDL.

FCPS is ALWAYS hiring bus drivers. The only thing is, you have to have a clean driving record and pass a drug test. (this eliminates at least 90 percent of the applicants)

It starts at about $17 an hour. The actual job itself is kind of fun, but management works 24/7 trying to piss you off.

Another drawback is you are out of work for 2 months in the summer. Everybody loves to gripe that school employees are "off all summer" like it's a paid vacation. The fact is, we are unemployed in the summer and NOT eligible for unemployment compensation. There used to be summer school runs, but that is pretty much history. The little summer work there is goes to the old timers (20+ year drivers).
