Daughter's Teeth
Posted by: Mother ()
Date: November 08, 2010 12:58PM

I have a daughter who is 18 years old and dosen't smile much because she has crooked teeth. She has a small mouth and there is over crowding of teeth. Her wisdom teeth are now coming in and she is having more problems.

She had beautiful teeth when she was young but when she lost her baby teeth the adult teeth grew back very crooked, over laping one another.

She say's it dosen't bother her but as a mother I know it does.

My husband and I don't have dental or medical insurance because we can't afford it.
Is there anybody that would like to help?

Please don't be rude or nasty.

Thank You.

If you are willing to drive to Richmond you can have your daughter's teeth fixed at MCV/VCU by a dental student. The dental student will be in his/her 4th year. All worked is checked by a dentist during all the dental visits. It is low cost or no cost. I hope that helps.

Actually, he didn't use them in the same sentence. There is a period after Jesus and quesiton mark after WTF, so they are separate sentences.

But I agree, No need use vulgairty in the same context with Jesus.

There's not a lot of options if you have to stay within the Metro area because you don't have a car, and don't have a lot of money. That kind of work isn't cheap, even with insurance.

Maybe there's a local dental school that can help, but honestly, if you can't afford insurance or a car, you may want to be certain of your financial priorities.

You're assuming the "F" in "WTF" stands for "fuck." It could mean flip, fark, frig, fizzle, etc.

Without being rude or nasty, may I suggest having to means necessary to provide for your children before you have them?
Oh, yeah, too late now.
How about this? Your adult 18 year old daughter gets a job that provides dental coverage?
Or are you just looking for donations?

You have no clue what the circumstances are for this family.

Besides, if we all waited till we could afford to have children, there wouldn't be any children. Nobody but the filthy rich could afford them, and I wonder about them at times. I've seen first hand how some of the wealthy raise their children. Those poor kids are lost souls because their parents were too busy to spend anytime to raising them. They put them of on nannies.

Someone who instantly responds to a very helpful message noting essentially free dental service with "We don't have a car" isn't looking to have her daughter's teeth fixed.

Really???? Let's see you get to Richmond with no vehicle, no money for a bus and no money to spend in a hotel or motel.

Who do you think you ARE!!! ASSHOLE!!

The obvious answer hasn't been addressed yet. The daughter is 18. If there is no money in the family I assume she is entering the workforce. She'll need to save her own money and perhaps down the line do something along the lines of the MVC idea or pay for her own orthodontic treatment. If the parents have no money or car then they obviously aren't going to be a source of the solution. The daughter can take her non-smiling sadness and turn that into a financial goal for herself in the workforce.

Without transportation, you're pretty much screwed around here as I don't know of any dental schools. The VCU dental school option mentioned previously is good - I know a guy who used it. That would help for the wisdom teeth if you could get down there at least to get those rectified. Borrow a car, pay a friend to drive you, or whatever.

Additionally, unless your dental insurance is stellar, you're still going to have to pay an assload out of pocket regardless. Most dental insurance used by companies around here is Delta Dental and they only cover $1,500 for orthodontics. Braces alone will cost $6000 - $7000 and that's just assuming braces and no other bite correction issues that need to be handled in stages. By the time I'm done with one of my kid's orthodontics, I will have spent almost $13,000 and I still have another kid coming up on that age.

The real reason she doesn't smile too much is because she is ashamed to be associated with poor white trash. Get those wisdom teeth out of her mouth and into yours. You need all the wisdom you can find.

If you use "fuck" for the "F," then yes, that's what it means. It doesn't matter, though. "What the heck" means the same thing as "what the fuck" or "what the hell."

eyeseeu Wrote:

"Mother" already explained it. Financially, they can't afford a car or health insurance. However, they want good teeth for their daughter. Wisdom tooth surgery I can understand, but "crooked teeth" should not be a financial priority, especially given the cost of orthodontics. Gods forbid they have an actual medical emergency; their financial situation will become even more bleak.

Then maybe the OP should pass this advice on to her daughter. If anyone makes a negative comment about her teeth, this can be her response. Cheap and effective.

I would suggest a few things to try

1. Contact some of the top orthodontist (Dr. Mcgrath, Oakton VA...is one) and see if they do Pro Bono work. Check Washingtonian Magazine for other top ortho's.

2. Since you and your husband most likely can't change jobs for one that has dental insurance, have your daughter look for companies w/ dental coverage for full-time employees along with health coverage. Google "Top 100 Companies to work for". Since you live in the Washington area, she will probably have a better chance finding a full time job then other areas. Search jobs at GMU, like a clerk job, for a full time position. If she gets in there, they will also pay for her college. Also, have her try Fairfax Hospital and/or Fair Oaks Hospital for jobs. I believe they give full benefits for employees working over 16 hours a week.

Don't let the car issue get in the way. There are buses that can take the place of it.

Good luck

That sounds good.Rich people as well as the poor should stop having kids. There ARE already too many children financially and emotionally deprived, it doesn't matter who's rich or poor. There are a lot of ways to be negligent parents regardless of income.
If we all restricted ourselves to saying only nice things, this would be an empty forum. Some things need to be said and heard.
Besides, didn't YOU just judge the rich people with nannys? YOU have no clue to THEIR circumstances.
Don't judge the judgemental lest you be a douche. What does Matthew have to say about that?

Why on Earth would you come to an anonymous Forum expecting help?

By the way, you got some good advice about VCU. I suggest you get in touch with them and then find a ride. If this is legit and you can't figure out a way to do something as simple as that, it explains why you have no money for insurance.

Call the Nothern Virginia Dental Society. You will need to prove your daughter's income and you may be able to get the wisdom teeth out at the free clinic in Nothern Virginia. Ortho is $$ and not available at the clinic.

ps Dental assistants make good money and often get dental for free. NOVA offer's classes and it will also provide your daughter with a career. Dental assistant's make about $22.00 an hour.

Hope this helps.

I have doubts about how authentic this request is. In my job I do some free and reduced price work (no it is not the dental field). There is always more demand out there for free work in various fields than there is a supply of those willing to provide it. Too many people seem to believe they should get free services because they need it and they don't want to spend the money for it. The last thing you want to do when working for free is to end up working for one of these ingrates. So Mother, if you are serious, here is some advice:

1) Get real about what you and your daughter can contribute financially. It is amazing how often people who "just cannot afford it" can come up with money for something they really want. I am not saying you can come up with everything, but you probably can come up with something. Consider part time employment. For example my high schooler earns more than enough money 2-3 days per week after school to cover in a couple of weeks the monthly payment for braces. Is there anything that you could sell to raise some of the money? How about giving up something like cigarettes and devoting the money to your daughter's braces? How about bartering?

2) Be willing to be inconvenienced. If you are willing to work around a busy professional's schedule, he or she is more likely to take you on than if you are going to be taking up time that could be spent with high paying clients. If you have to travel, whether accross the county or to another part of the state, consider it your cost of getting the service. If you are guessing I believe you were too quick in dismissing the VCU idea, you are correct. Richmond is a couple of hours away, and can be reached by bus or by train, or if all else fails in a friend's borrowed car.

3) Consider waiting. Circumstances may be better tomorrow than today. As some have mentioned your daughter could obtain a job that provides dental insurance benefits enabling her to cover the cost, or you and her could save up the funds to have the procedure done later.

4) Find someone with connections. There are professionals out there who won't provide free or reduced price services to the public at large, but who will provide them to deserving friends of friends.

5) Do research. (I guess that is what you are doing here.)

If you are serious about this issue, call around and try to find some free assistance. If you can find the help, contact a local non profit. they will likely have medical outreach and van transportation to take you to the surgery. Your best bet would be seeking out a surgery center rather than a hospital/clinic. They will likely have a certificate of public need and will be happy to accommodate.

Good for you turd hurder! The feeling is mutual.

If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all. Nobody wants to hear from you.

It seems like you're always putting you two sense in on all blogs.

Obviously, nobody likes your posts.

Take my advice and stop posting!!! :) LOL

Right? Everybody knows the "If you don't have [anything] nice to say don't say anything at all" rule. That should be common cents.

You would think people would get a clue, but you're right...it should be common sense but some people don't have that.

@chuckhoffmann...I THINK YOU NEED ANGER MANAGEMENT!!! It might just help you if you're not too far gone.

There are volunteers that can drive a person to/from VCU or Richmond.

I was living in Southwest VA and had to ride a bus to Roanoke, VA to get my teeth pulled.

To the mother that wrote this..... how do you get to other appointments or to the grocery store?

The obvious answer hasn't been addressed yet. The daughter is 18. If there is no money in the family I assume she is entering the workforce. She'll need to save her own money and perhaps down the line do something along the lines of the MVC idea or pay for her own orthodontic treatment

Here's another thought...since the daughter is 18, and has bad teeth, she'd be perfect as a exotic dancer in West Virginia.
Problem solved.

You go ahead and use "WHAT THE FIXADENT". You obviously need it for your FAKE TEETH!! Even with the use of fixadent, your teeth still don't stay in.

Remember at the bar....you had a glass of liquer in your hands and you were laughing sooooo hard your teeth fell out into the glass!!! Or were you too drunk to remember?

Yep. That is closer than Richmond! Just pack a few jugs of water and take some cheap burgers off the menu at any local fast food joint (they remain edible for long periods of time under virtually any conditions) and start walking. It is maybe 60 or 65 miles. If you are speed walking at about 4 miles an hour you could make it less than a day no problem. Sleep on a bench outside and when they open in the morning just walk in and get the work done. They will probably need to put her to sleep though so plan to spend a 2nd night on that bench while she recovers before making the trek home.

Good luck. Let us know how it all works out.

Hey Mother,

Why didn't you think of this shit when your daughter was a baby?? Even if say, you had this child when you were a teen, (which I suspect to be the case), you had EIGHTEEN FUCKIN' YEARS to get your shit together enough to AT LEAST earn a decent wage so that your family can at least have necessities like a freaking car, AND hey, what about that pesky ol' health/dental insurance? You and Tommy have been livin' on a friggin' prayer for 18 yrs it seems, and time has caught up with you. I feel for your daughter and I fear for her future. If her own parents have no common sense to pass on, there's no hope in hell for her!

I know that when I visit this blog, people do not say polite things.
Even if someone dies in an accident, they start asking for graphic descriptions or show pictures of road kill.

Before you post, make sure that you understand the group.
People get to practice freedom of speech & usually are quite snarky!

Discovery Channel may pay to have you 18 year old's teeth fixed. She will need to spit out at least 5 or 6 kids first.
The public is very sympathetic to causes like that!

I heard they'll even pay for LASIK now too (At least if you go into aviation, I'm not sure about other positions).

If you can find a ride, or plan to hitch hike, this is close in Winchester, VA.
With snow on the ground this winter, you could cross country ski there or find a dog pack & sled.

Good luck! I too needed nice teeth. Still am waiting........

WE don't have money for the child's teeth but we have money for a computer to express our bad financial situation. Sell the computer that is a start. Cell phone with texting and all the extras, have just a phone for emergencies. Anybody else can you think of a way for her to cut her expenses?

Elle, I thought you were nicer than this. Who are we to judge this poor woman and her snaggle-toothed daughter? We don't know the circumstances. Be nice to this poor woman. Just because you work for NASA making spaceships and stuff doesn't mean everybody is fortunate enough to make that kind of living.

I personally know how having bad teeth can affect your confidence. The dentists always told me that my teeth would straighten out as I got older. I would even hold my head down when I spoke so people could not see how crooked my teeth are. I hated my smile.

Then, I got a JOB, made a budget I could afford while making smart financial decisions and paid for invisalign.

or at least call down to Richmond and ask how to get the procedure. Then if you chose to get it, THEN figure out how to get their. Amtrak, Bus, put an ad on Craigslist (careful which section) etc. We can not do it all for you at FXU

And the suggestion about going to the medical school was an excellent one, by the way. If what you arer saying is true - it just might be - kudos for you for bringing it to this poor homeless guy's and his crocked teeth daughters attention.

I would call down to Richmond if I could. We don't own a phone. Can anyone here just call for me, give me money and drive us down there? I could also use a manicure, back massage and help with my food stamps application. I would work if I could but I am disabled from the extra 500 pounds of weight I have on my body. We are poor, yet we all manage to stay really fat and probably smoke cigarettes. It's amazing that the three of us, all of working age, can not find work that actually has benefits... but again, the fat thing. Oh, and the laziness as well.
