True. Some impatient cock-smoke had the nerve to honk at me to go through a red stop sign the other day. Just because nobody else is coming doesn't mean you can just run right through before it turns green..

there might be a problem with your all's driving if you keep hitting red lights. When i drive i can time in my head when the lights will be green so i can hit them at the right times. sometimes you have to speed up a few mph and make a few zig zags on the road to get by so you can hit miss inevitable red lights

It's all fun and games until you zig-zag into a pussy who stops when the light turns yellow.

7100 & Fair Lakes Blvd is BAD.
shortcut: go around it by taking Fair Lakes circle. I've been doing that for years, never fails. Even if a buncha tree huggers stop for some geese to cross the road...at least you're not sitting at that awful intersection.

Route 50 and Annandale Rd has an insufferably long light. And it only goes green long enough for about 10 cars to get through.

Did you look at his list? It's legit. I understand what you're saying, but it will make no difference at many of these. MAYBE at 3 AM on a weeknight will you approach one of these and it will be green. But don't get your hopes up.

Braddock Road / Ox Road, the light is NEVER timed with Roanoake Road, and always red (the one that goes into University Mall from George Mason), which is also always red. In fact, it's safe to say that every light along Braddock Road starting at the beltway is always red.

Roberts Parkway turning left on to Burke Centre Parkway... I will usually take it to avoid the PO-PO who hand out BCP and no fail, that light will be red no matter when I get there. It's a long f'n light too.

What pisses me off at that intersection is the through lanes on both Braddock and Ox have a super long green light, as in 2-3 minutes. But if you are in the left turn lanes for northbound OX, you get about 8-10 seconds worth of green arrow. If you're more than 5-6 cars back, you gotta either run the fucking light or waste another 5 minutes of your life.

I have a very itchy horn finger at that particular light, but whenever it's backed up to the entrance to UV mall on that side of Ox, I usually just go straight and turn into that first neighborhood, do a nice turn around in there, and get back onto ox and pull a right (usually Braddock is on green arrows at this point).

This is one of those intersections where some stupid f*** decided it would be better to let one direction go at a time instead of having a left turn cycle both ways then a through cycle both ways at the same time.

It was the same way at Hayfield Rd and Kingstowne Village Pkwy for awhile until apparently someone got their head out of their a** and put it back the way it used to be. I wonder who makes these decisions. Another good example of traffic light stupidity is on Route 1. Some intersections have left turn arrows that turn solid green where others have left turn arrows that turn to red. Sometimes (rarely) this makes sense but there are many, many like this that make no sense at all.

The Rt. 50 through traffic is not one direction at a time, but I think the Annandale Rd. greens are. The Rt. 50 green light (both directions) is woefully short for the rush hour direction (EB morning, WB afternoon), which is what I interpreted the post to be referring to. Of course, it seems like the decision to have each side of Annandale Rd. go one direction at a time likely knocks some time off of the green cycle for EB/WB Rt. 50.

While that area used to be my old stomping grounds, I am fortunate that it is not part of my regular drive routes anymore.

High beams will not make a light change faster. Lights are triggered by pressure sensors which are embedded in the asphalt at an intersection. I always find it funny to see some foreigner who pulls too far into an intersection so that they miss their light because they were not sitting on top of the sensors.

They don't work by pressure. "Loop sensors" are wires that are embedded in the asphalt and are basically metal detectors. But yeah, morons that pull up too far aren't in the loop and the light don't change.

I've often wondered thru the years if Vienna gets the lights to hang on red to create the traffic jam in town and get folks to give up and shop at the Gieant and etc.

Now Fairfax City seems to be an all day traffic jam also and there ain't shit to shop at along the Fairfax Blvd.

Old Keene Mill Road and Tiverton Road/Hunter Village Drive, in combination with Old Keene Mill Road and Greeley Blvd. If you get the red at one of the lights you will get the red at the next one.

Perfect crappy timing.

They are the lights that I am approaching. Some people have good stoplight karma and some don't.

Years ago the Mayor of Vienna opposed a plan to connect the two parts of Abbotsford Rd. He wanted the traffic to come through the Town of Vienna instead. Now we have needless congestion. (The Town lemmings will tell you that the land in question is not actually in the Town, but will not dispute that he successfully opposed the plan.)

He was trying to make up a dopey way of triggering an EMS green light change. That won't work though.

I recall reading several years ago that a firm based in Montgomery County, Maryland had a contract to develop an integrated traffic light system that would link lights at different intersections in Fairfax County so that lights would not always be red when you get to them because the sensor is tripped by cross traffic.

I always assumed that the system was never finished because it was some scam project to generate more fuel tax revenue in Virginia or to stunt Fairfax County growth to the benefit of Maryland, but I could be wrong.
