What is the legality in regards to hunting deer on county parkland? There's some woods I'd like to hunt in (with a bow) and it's technically Fairfax County parkland. I know it's legal to hunt with a bow in Fairfax, but is there a law that says you can't hunt on park land?

I believe you can legally hunt with a bow on your own land. Fairfax recently announced bow hunting dates in maybe a dozen County parks. However, it seemed very organized -- I believe you had to be registered as part of a hunting group. I'm sure you can find these details on the Fairfax County Parks website.

It's legal as long as you only hunt old people.

I live near Difficult Run. Fairfax has allowed some yodels to bow hunt along the mountain bike trail that connects to the WO&D. They have to be members of some private hunting club, they have to pass a marksmanship test. Still they are yodels. They drive their ATVs along the paths marked with no motorized vehicle signs. They use Bows that on average shoot 200 yards but per the county rules only have to be off the trail by 50 feet. A lot of good that will do me when I jog past the 8 point buck they are drooling to kill, wearing my head phones, and my stylish camo jogging outfit. Fairfax County will end up paying for this crazy idea. See the guy who started this thread need only see the other Yodels along side of the road with their bows and their ATVs and he's in.

Maybe during hunting season you should run at the track at one of the local high schools. It is so much safer!!!

Why don't you call the park authority. To my knowledge, no, they do not allow it. I know for a fact that the NVRPA does not. Most parks are set up as a wild life refuge.

Try hunters for the hungry. Every few years or so they are allowed to bag a few on park property if the population is in desperate need of thinning.

You are obviously unfamiliar with bow hunting for deer. No serious
bow hunter would ever attempt a 200 yard shot to begin with. The
program is administered by the County in order to reduce the size
of the deer population which is way out of control and should have
been implemented many years ago but wasnt due to pathological whining
by animal rights crackpots. Now we pay the price in deer-car collisions,
lyme disease, and destroyed fauna.

Also forgot to mention that the hunters pay for all their licenses,
gear and transportation so the cost is paid by the hunters and not
the county.

Why don't you hunt ? If you don't then keep the hell out of the woods, these hunters are qualified and insured. They are thinning the deer out and not harming your dumbass, so keep out of the woods.

Virginia is a big fucking state, try finding a county where 1.2 million people arent stacked on top of each other.., uh , that would be all the others.

If and this a BIG if these DEER need to be thinned out, they can carry diseases that can transfer to your little Bichon, they cause on average of $2200.00 when colliding with a vehicle, grow a set and stop worrying about true outdoorsmen doing a little hunting to try and save your nadless ASS!

to answer your question they were right as earlier stated.

you first have to pass a marksmenship test where you have to hit a few arrows within a few inches, and then you have to get in a club that is allowed to hunt specific park lands. i know this from experience, as we hunt o our property and recently the parkland started getting "legally" hunted by clubs.

Every Fall Fairfax does organized hunts as part of their deer management programs. You have to register and the hunts are organized so you have to show up with the group because they have to close some of the paths in the park and some of the roads. I believe the meat is donated, don't know if you can keep it

However, bowhunting private property is absolutely legal if you can locate a land-owner who is interested in your help with controlling the deer population.
