Sonic booms?

Am I the only one hearing multiple sonic booms every hour or so? I'm near Lorton, and the house gets rattled every time

I'm hearing it too, in Springfield. It's not sonic booms. I'm guessing it's something to do with construction in the EPG just off the Parkway

Also in West Springfield. Happens every so often. My guess is it's the quarry in Lorton.

I grew up with sonic booms in the early 60's (just off Lake Michigan at what was known as Billy Mitchell Air Field). You would know if it were a sonic boom---trust me. It would be hard to mistake.

I don't think they have allowed jets to fly at supersonic speeds over land for quite some time.

They're testing explosives at Quantico. They were a little surprised they were experiencing this all the way in Springfield, from what my friend said.

I was in Burke last night and thought I heard something like this.

I heard it around noon in Fairfax City. It sounded like a dumpster being dropped, but it happened so frequently.

I've been hearing it too in Burke today. Fairly consistently for the past 5 hours or so. I'd love to know exactly what this is!

It might be legal in the mojave, but not most places where people live. Also I experienced several sonic booms daily when I was a kid. They were routine. Not 2 in five weeks. Maybe that's why we're called "boomers" (ha).

I used to hear them all the time as a kid growing up near Dulles, because we used to have the Concordes flying into and out of here. Since they stopped those flights, I only hear Sonic Booms periodically when we have military flyovers.

Exactly the same description I was going to post. I thought maybe the construction at PanAm shopping center, but it sounded "far away".

Gotta say that we heard them at Cox Farms in Centreville north of 66 on Thursday. We were all wondering if the booms were part of something related to the spooky hayride. Guess not.

They are at it again - it is really loud again today; sounds like machine gun fire or something!

Is Quantico training or is it the quarry? Anyone else hear it today?

You all are some real dipshits to think that you can hear anything going on at Quantico in Fairfax. I've literally 200 yds from the base boundary on days when they are doing live fire drills (guns, artillery, etc) and could barely hear it.

Considering a handgun report is about as loud as an airplane taking of (decible-wise), it's not unreasonable to think one could hear artillery. Quantico's only about 25 miles away from Fairfax (as the crow flies).

I heard the same thing as all of you.

I contacted the Fairfax County Police and reported what I heard and they told me Quantico was testing explosives at the marine base.

They were getting alot of complaints. Normally, Quantico lets the county and gov't know when they will be testing but lately they haven't so the police were in the dark at first.

The loudest artillery report I've ever heard, was from a cannon that I was marching in front of when they let it rip (I wasn't RIGHT in front of the barrel, but about 10 feet in front and to the side). It fired over us, and holy hell was it bombastic.

I know for a fact that on a good day you can generally hear a report from at least 10 miles away, but it depends upon wind direction, geography, and the number as well as type of artillery. During the Battle of Gettysburg for instance, people in Pittsburgh, PA could hear the artillery reports (That's 150 Miles away!). There were over 600 pieces of artillery involved in that battle alone (From July 1st - July 3rd, 1863).

I was at Fort Bragg in the early 90's. One night, while on a training exercise, we could hear canons firing (155mm iirc) from several miles away, and then hear the shells wizz over our heads. Nothing close, they were maybe a half mile+ in the air. Not sure if that was a common thing or a miscommunication, but they were definitely shooting for several hours. Pretty cool.

Did it resembles a Sonic Boom, or distant Thunder?
