IED Found in Burke
Posted by: Pyro ()

An improvised explosive device was found on a front porch in Burke this past weekend.

The explosive was reported at 9:17 p.m. Friday and found at the 9800 block of Burke Pond Court off of Burke Centre Parkway. The item was described as a water bottle with material inside of it that the Fairfax County Public Information Office declined to describe to avoid imitations. Some combination of a diet carbonated soda and a sweet candy known as "mentos" was believed to be involved.

No one was injured, though apparently there was a reaction with the bottle bomb, with the explosive either spilling or detonating.

A spokesperson from the Fairfax County Fire Marshal said that though he did not know of the specific case involved, the department would have disposed of the explosive according to their standard operating procedures if htey had been called. The spokesperson declined to comment on whether this could be related to eight earlier chemical bombs found in the county this year in parts of Reston and West Springfield.

If you find a plastic bottle placed in an unusual location, take caution, especially if the bottle is leaking, hissing, producing unusual odors, or vibrating. Avoid touching the item, clear the area around it of people, and call 911.

[sarcasm]Really man. The blast wave generated when a stack of Mentos are slammed into a carbonated drink is devastating.[/sarcasm]

An "IED"?!? Somewhere an EOD specialist is rolling over in his grave.

Yeah, like a google search isn't going to turn up a hojillion pages describing how to make one by typing "bottle bomb." Stellar police work. Instead of making it sound so romantic and mysterious, they should explain exactly what it is and what it does so people have an understanding of the thing they're supposed to be looking out for.

Helicopter parents everywhere will be screeching, "Get away from that bottle, it might blow up!"

Those guys have balls the size of the anti-shipping mines they disarm.

Or folks could simply do a search of FFXU, and read the reports from this past Summer (Which describe the material make-up of these bombs).

Funny, it was probably carbonation fizzing over and some dumb-fuck foreigner thought it was a bomb.
