elderly care

I am looking for nursing care for my elderly father that wo'nt cost him every dime he's ever made! Anyone know of a resonably priced care situation. Ideally it would be with other seniors who are still aware and mentally capable (he's sharp as a tack")Nursing homes are outrageously priced and require signing over all his assests. Perhaps a private home, which cares for elderly persons?Thank you!Hoping for something under $3500 a month?

I think there are a couple of ladies mentioned in another thread on this forum named Lauren Day and Sydney Sweeney that are into caring for elderly men.

ZING!...?

When it comes to care for the elderly the best you can hope is to get what you pay for. At $3,500 you are talking about around $115 per day. While that may seem like alot, you are talking about room, meals and a level of professional care and monitoring.

You mentioned nursing homes. Has your father actually progressed to the point that he needs that level of care? Can he get by with a facility that offers a lower level of care, one of the residential facilities for the elderly perhaps? Also does it have to be in NoVa?

Signing over all assets is a bit unusual except at lower levels of income/assets and this may indicate they are thinking your father is a potential Medicaid patient.

thank you for the honest, helpful responses. He's not quite at the nursing home level, recovering from surgery in a rehab right now, next step in 3-4 weeks is assisted living,etc...Nursing home possibly would be medicaid patient if we went that route. No Va his family ,is here, he was in penn but on his own,no good.
Family has thought about taking him in but we all have full time jobs w/limited funds.
we are looking at residential fac. as you suggested we just do'nt know if we have found all options. Have one place in mind, but want to search throughly before placing him.I will try the website suggested.
thank you both.

The best elderly care home is called the "Fairfax Recycling Center". Dump the fogies into the proper bin, and I guarantee that they'll be revived* as 30 something yuppies with fat bank accounts. You can thank me later ;-)

*Disclaimer: I take no responsibility for failure to revive.

Hi, im sorry you are in the situation you are in.. Im a nurse and have worked in many Nursing Hms. Your right to some extent about his assets. It,s my understanding that in Northern vA. He can have nothing in his name in the past 5 yrs. And if you go to certain nursing homes, you can tell by the care who is self pay, and who is on Medicaid. It's very sad and true. At this point, i would look into assisted living, or they have aldult day care provided by the county, and i dont think it cost you anything. They are great there!! If you need help in the mean time, i would love to help you. I have done alot of Private duty, and negot. with costs. The onl thing is how to contact one another, without being exposed to these sometimes cruel people.. If you think of something, and need my help, let me know. Good luck. J

Your dad will live longer at home. Can you keep him there? Contact the county agency on aging. You can get a few months unpaid leave by law. His doctor can order at home assistance assistance (nurse thearpy, bathing etc.) which medicare can pay a limited period of time. If he is well enough he can live in manor care. Good luck!

wish it were that easy,at least set out on an iceberg is a more honorable way to die than wasting away in a nursing home,a friend of mine started w/a private room fresh flowers every day, when she ran out of money she died in a "dorm" with her sheets wet w/urine. This was 20 odd years ago...but...you must be careful, check carfully

There are many places around, but most are roughly the same story. Sad, really. Avoid Sleepy Hollow if you can. I often see patients where I work that came from there and are in really bad shape.

If he can take care of himself, he can live in an independent living facility.
He can choose to purchase a condo or rent a room. The one below is about 2500/mo.

Another option is to buy a 55+ condo and arrange for weekly maid and nurse visits. You can probably get a good rate since most there will have arrangement with same provider.

Fuck you Troll. Good thing your father abandoned your alcoholic slut mom years ago, so you won't have to deal with this issue.

Good luck finding a place for your dad. Try some of the places where you actually buy a unit sort of like a condo. They are kind of a limited retirement home where you dont exactly get 24 hour a day care but you do have someone looking in on them. I think the cost depends on how much care the person requires. If they are mobile and can do things for themselves then the cost should be quite a bit less.

OP, I have spent considerable time in the past dealing with this. My elderly parents were in AZ and both had to go into a nursing facility. Father could not travel so I could not bring them out here. Upon his death, I spent 5 month fighting with the State (light nursing care, not full assist) for Medicaid because the care was approx 5 to 6K a month. Since all their assets were gone (eat up by nursing care), I applied for Medicaid.

I attempted to get into an agreement with the State that I would pay 3K of the expected 6K month fees if Medicaid and Medicare paid the rest. It took Gov Kaine to assist. She stayed in a new nursing facility in Gainesville and she really liked it and they liked her. It's a great facility, great people. She passed away not to long ago (Sigh - I misss her very much)

Sorry for the ramblings, but 3500 will not get you much. The last two months of my Mom's care was 35K due to hospital care and rapid decline. I agreed, though I did not have to, to 7K of that. This shit is not cheap and the Commonwealth is generally not used to old people coming into the State.

The State is cutting back on Social Services. For those who would say why she did not stay at our house... she needed professional nursing care and we live in a townhouse and no way could she climb stairs.

In AZ, I had used a professional Home Healthcare service and if you keep on top of them, they can help. It's not 24/7 but I paid for a nurse in the Morning and Evening and a "helper" to assist with bathing, dressing in the am, noon, and night. Cleaning crew once a week and meals on wheels one every day. Cost was approx 1K per month but that was AZ, not Northern Virginia and 5 years ago.

I would look into that and see if Medicaid or Medicare (I know Socialist stuff) could assist in defraying some or most of the cost.

Again, sorry for the ramblings. Hope something was of value in this.

I forgot, when using a home healthcare provider, if you have your doctor order some type of limited care (physical therapy etc..) Medicare will pay for that and the Home healthcare provider can help you out with the paperwork and process. It's a bit of gaming the system but its only temp (perhaps 6 weeks) but it can defray some of the expenses.

If you get desperate enough, you can try Fairfax County Department of Family Services. http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dfs/olderadultservices/

They can give you an assessment of your father's ability to care for himself. I don't know if this is still true, but it used to be if a person's income was low enough, he/she could get free in-home care.

If he is mentally sharp....please help him stay that way. He would most likely never need nursing care. He does need "socialization" to stay sharp. Loving kids aren't doing them any favors staying in their home, if the are isolated all day, because everyone is working.

$3500 is decent for assissted living. Is that his monthly income? What sources?
There is a hugh difference when your talking NURSING care as opposed to some help daily.

Great resources and very affordable. Please, if your dad is still sharp ( I can't stress this enough) consider this. We waited too long ( because mom was stubborn) and before you knew it, the short term memory was gone, that was a direct result of isolation. We were calling/ visiting every day but it isn't the same as socializing with people. Once the memory loss comes in, that is when nursing care comes in, and this past year it was 100,000+. I really think, if I had been smarter, and insisted that she go to assisted living earlier, we wouldn't be in this position now. The most important part is that she would still be LIVING her life, instead of just being taken care of by others.

I would've added Thoreau Place in South Lakes, Reston, but there doesn't seem to be any available units. You could buy a condo there for 100-150K and arrange for the other services. Sell the place at roughly the same price in 5-10 years when you need to go to assisted living.

They make sure you have NO assets to speak of. When you apply for free in-home care, you can't own any sort of real estate, vehicles, etc without selling them first.
