May 28, 2008 (The Free Lance-Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A Fairfax County employee pleaded guilty in Spotsylvania County Circuit Court today, to making online sexual advances to what he thought was a 13-year-old girl.

Instead, the "girl" Shahid Farooq, 32, was chatting with over the internet was a group of police officers from Spotsylvania and Fairfax counties.

The Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office started investigating Farooq last June when an online screen name began sending messages to a decoy screen name they set up, posing as a teenage girl, according to a plea agreement signed by Farooq.

That screen name was later determined to belong to Farooq. The messages Farooq sent were sexual in nature and made propositions that could be classified as solicitation of a minor, the agreement goes on to say.

Soon after, Spotsylvania police went to officers from Fairfax County and shared their information. Fairfax police had begun an investigation on Farooq as well.

A Spotsylvania detective, posing as the 13-year-old girl, was chatting online with Farooq Aug. 15 of last year, when Fairfax deputies went into his government office to find him masturbating in his work space while engaged in the chat, according to the agreement.

Farooq later admitted to chatting with the decoy screen name and making propositions thinking he was in fact talking with a teenager.

Farooq, however, denied in court today that the masturbation in his office took place.

After police found Farooq Aug. 15, he was arrested and charged with two counts each of electronic solicitation of a minor and attempted indecent liberties.

Farooq pleaded guilty to one of the electronic solicitation charges today and the others were dismissed.

As recommended in the plea agreement, Farooq was sentenced to serve five years in prison, with four years and six months suspended.

He was also ordered to register as a sex offender and have no online contact for three years unless mandated by his employer.

The difference between my ancestors from Ireland and the current crop of immigrants is huge. First of all, mine came legally. As soon as they could, they became citizens and then worked long and hard on the railroads in the midwest. My grandmother became deaf as a young child from measles. At that time, there were no schools for the deaf in Ireland. Her parents knew they wanted their daughter to attend school. So they found out that Ohio had a school for the deaf back in the late 1800's. They never eturned or sent money to their homeland because now the US was their homeland.

My ancestors learned the language and the customs of their new country. They wanted to assimilate and they wanted all their kids to work hard and become active citizens. Here the immigrants want to remain culturally the way they were brought up. They do not want to learn English or follow many of our laws. And we cater to this by providing signs in Spanish, driving tests in Spanish, etc. To be honest, many are not very hard workers either. When I was a teacher, it seemed that education was not real important to many of our Hispanic families. Korean and VietName families were the exceptions. I think the immigrants you are talking about are in some other world.

Working on the railroad was the equvilant of the today's work that Americans wont do anymore. yes..yes..yes...all our grandpatents were saints and royalty from Europe. Yes, they were hard working...came here to work hard..not complain...and work hard doing those jobs no one else would do. They also formed gangs...the Irish formed the most violent gangs NYC ever saw. I do not recall my grandparents feeling like they were hated. They settled in Cleveland, Ohio. I think you have been watching Gangs Of new York or Far and Away too much. And, believe me, they were not royalty at all! They came from farmers and factory workers. Their most priceless possession was their Catholic faith.
They did not have slaves. Well I guess my grandmother did. She had nine kids and they all had to help out a lot. I think the picture I painted of the immigrants in my post is a lot more accurate than yours, Vince.

Dear Trickie....thats fine..my only real point is that today's immigrants are of the same quality as your grandparents. I know you may disagree with that statement..but so be it..,I never made a point on whose ancestors owned slaves and whose didnt, so I have no idea why that thought came out. The examples of some Irish immigrants wasnt so much as to apply to your grandparents...but what some of the Irish did experience upon arrival here. Jackie-O...if immigrants legal or illegal are urinating in public so often so that you can spot them in the act at all the places you mention....maybe you ought to report it to the Police. While not a major violent crime no one should feel they can do so in public. And perhaps if these people were provided organized places to congregate and meet that would help solve the problem. Roach’s office declined to prosecute many of the cases filed by the Murphy police department as part of the sting operation.
