Will Fairfax County go with the rest of the nation in making teacher ratings public?

Parents talk about teachers all of the time. You really don't need to know an official rating to know which teachers in your kid's school sucks or not.

What a GREAT idea. We need this to keep our teachers accountable. Thank you for posting this! The only place I have found for parents to rate teachers is at www.ratemyteacher. Both web sites would be great.

Either you're a parent who pays attention to who your child's teachers are, or you don't even deserve to know. Too many parents bitch over stupid stuff anyhow.

Principal, County ranking, test scores, and teacher credentials should be made public.

It encourages all teachers to become better teachers.

Yeah, that's the ticket!

FCPS could base pay raises on teacher ratings. Bad rating=no raise!

Oh wait, teachers don't get pay raises anymore. Nevermind.

So the teachers that teach the honors courses (AP/IB included) would get great ratings because their kids are naturally the smartest and get the highest scores on tests. But the teachers who work their ass off to help kids learn how to read and locate Europe on a world map, but still have kids with lower test scores, would be assumed to be a "bad" teacher.

This is fucking retarded logic. If there's that big of an issue with teachers, just privatize schools across the board (vouchers, whatever) and let the administration from each school determine who are the dynamic employees within their building. Schools that don't employ great people won't survive - it's very simple, but opposite of the socialist agenda of the current White House.

If you read the article on the way the CA schools are ranking teachers it is not based on child test scores. It is based on a combination of factors including peer and principal ratings.

That and if you got rid of the Teachers Union maybe our kids would get a better education and not just that stupid "no child left behind" crap.

Sorry but not all kids can be smart and not all kids can be normal. It makes sense to me to teach kids according to their ability instead of teaching them according to the slowest kid in the class....

R U kidding? The whole business depends on smart parents---who tend to be successful parents---who tend to make lots of money and live in certain areas where their money buys nicer houses and schools. Those public schools in those areas are great because the parents are "on the ball". (If you passed Algebra, you know that if a=b and b=c, then a=c---this is simple logic). You will not get better schools with better administrations if they are all privatized. Here's what you will get---schools in poor areas that "hand out grades" and make dumb parents happy (and we have a ton of dumb parents now because smart people have been using birth control). Those kids will still be unable to get jobs even if they get diplomas because everyone will know which private schools suck. Look at the article in the Post today about private for profit colleges and you'll get a glimpse of what those places are about---and it ain't educashen!

Good luck with your socialist paranoia. Total capitalism isn't going to take us to heaven. We became a great country through public schools and we can do it again if people start to demand it---and it has to happen on a local level---and it will when people get REALLY mad. I agree with R6---get rid of the NCLB crap and start making the kids work hard---they want it and the country needs it! Lots of money is being wasted on slow kids who are not going to lead this country out of a paper bag. Sorry to be so harsh---but we have to wake up. It's true that the feds are ruining education---but it's not because our system is public---it's because they are not letting the local areas run it (as it was designed in the first place).

Of course we now have the problem that people running our local system have been hired for their "kiss up to the feds" credentials. We have to get rid of those people and put some "creative locals" back in. This is going to be a big job (I understand why some people just want to toss the whole thing however).

If you think the "Teachers Union" had anything to do with No Child Left Behind, you are a moron. They fought it.

Nope, your hero Dubya Bush signed NCLB into law. Can you imagine having that idiot running education?

1) Qwest, you want to base how FCPS does things on how California operates. Hmmm, great logic. Let's choose the state in the worst economic shape to base our system.

2) VA is a "right to work" state. Unions have no say in VA, and by say, I mean they don't get to sign off on the budget. Does anyone do their homework anymore?

This site is clearly a place for ignorant comments on a serious issue such as education. This is sad.
