No Chocolate Milk in FFX schools

What gives? Now my kids can't get chocolate milk in school anymore. But they're serving hummus and chips. WTF? Can't a kid be a kid anymore? Did some fatass mother with an obese kid complain or something. This sucks. I am truly pissed off.

Feed your kids chocolate and sugar at home. They will still be acting like kids at school even if you feed them gruel.

There's no reason to feed school students junk food.

Chocolate milk? It might be wiser to check on whether there is toilet paper and soap in the bathrooms.

News flash: Your kid is going to have to do without a lot more than chocolate milk in the future. He is going to be paying for your retirement and Medicare so the school is just getting him ready for that kind of sacrifice. Oh---don't forget to send in kleenex for the classroom. It was on the supply list.

Also, get a real job where you have to think about something.

Whole Foods is having some campaign right now to get salads on the menu at public schools across the nation. With parents like the OP, kids will grow up on high fructose corn syrup and sodium.

Milk isn't junk food, no matter if it has chocolate in it.

Let's see, so NYC is going to ban all smoking within city limits, even if it's outdoors. The schools around here have shutout Chocolate milk, and in PG Co. I think it was, they want to raze all of the fast food joints. What next? It's starting to sound like Chi-comm around here.

They finally posted a better reason than to keep kids from getting fat, although that was part of it. FCPS asked the vendor for a healthier chocolate milk (no high-fructose corn syrup; possibly skim as well); vendor said no; they canned the chocolate milk. Don't know why they couldn't find a different vendor who would be willing.

Now there are a lot of ES kids drinking water instead of milk because they hate regular milk but would drink chocolate milk. Water has fewer calories and is less fattening, yes, but kids actually need the calcium and some fat while they're growing (lest we old grumpy FFU folks forget).

If you think drinking 28 grams of sugar per half-pint is good for you, you should probably schedule a physical sometime soon.

THIS.

Compare the amount of sugar in chocolate milk to soda and prepare to be amazed.

I never understood why they just don't serve water. Good old H2O. It's super cheap, doesn't require delivery or storage, and has no negative impact on health. There's not a single thing to complain about.

Indeed. We do kids a serious disservice by getting them accustomed to sweetened drinks at an early age.

Other than me, no one that I work with can tolerate the taste unsweetened tea. The reason? They were raised on sweetened tea, and I was raised on unsweetened. Sweetened tea makes me want to puke. Get a kid used to sweetened beverages and you can bet that they'll be hooked on them for life.

Just pack your kid's lunch with a chocolate milk, problem solved. Just because you can't buy it at school doesn't mean you can't drink it if you bring it from home.

Not always. My family made ice tea with the consistency of fudge when you stirred the tea, so much sugar. Only because I was diet conscious (not health) I learned to drink and enjoy without the sugar. Point is you can change your taste. I prefer unsweetened, and now that I'm older, I do appreicate the health aspect of limiting our sugar intake.

Growing up we only had whole milk. What you say may be true, if you are strictly talking about fat/sugar content, but the kids weren't obese and I do believe the idea was the calicum/nutrients. It's got to beat the hell out of soda. Don't think the obesity problem is milk related.

Americans get way too much dairy these days. Milk wasn't a problem 30 years ago because people weren't wolfing down frozen yogurt and fried cheese every other hour. Americans are obese because our diet consists mainly of fatty processed crap. Switching to skim is one way of cutting back on the far without losing the cakcium and Vitamin D.

LOL. I WAS a portly little kid back in the day. Looking at the products which are marketed for kids snacks and lunches, I'm shocked more kids aren't massive.

Sounds pretty authoritative. Too bad there's no evidence whatsoever that saturated fat (the main type of fat in dairy) causes obesity.

Total fat consumption as well as dairy fat consumption has declined over the last 40 years, while obesity has skyrocketed:

This data is from the same government that tells you fat is evil.

For crying out loud, stop letting the gov't/schools control what you do as parents. Who gives a crap what the school sells or doesn't sell to the students, if you don't like it send a lunch with your kid of what you want him/her to eat. That's that. I teach preschool and this 4 year old comes in with a large bottle of diet coke with his lunch. Not my problem if that's what the parent gives him - have at it - drink up. Others are coming in with all sorts of "squeezable" food - pudding, peanut butter in a squeeze tube, yogart, whatever. And these are 3-4 year olds. Wake up parents are allowing their kids to get fat. It's not a pint of milk at lunch that's the cause its the rest of the crap they eat at home.

I wonder why the vendor would decline to make healthier chocolate milk? You'd think that sales will plummet because most kids don't like white milk.

Unless the County wants the (more expensive to make) healthier stuff for the same price. Or maybe the volume doesn't justify retooling the production line.

Is Shenandoah Pride still the FCPS vendor? I used to work for those motherfuckers.

The food at FCPS has been a joke for years now. It's basically pull it out of the freezer and shove it in the oven junk. My parents can remember a time when food was actually made in the school kitchen from scratch. But now, I remember seeing mold on the bread at Robinson, the undercooked "cookies", rotting peaches, etc. Nasty shit. So I just started bringing my own lunch. If the half-assed current generation parents would make thier kids lunch, they wouldn't complain.

I read that the vendor said it was impossible to totally eliminate all high fructose corn syrup from the milk. It's probably is impossible, but still, it's just chocolate milk. I remember when we could get milkshakes in school and somehow I survived.

Sweetened tea is garbage compared to unsweetened. FYI, you can also have unsweetened tea with different tastes, if you simply use different flavors of tea.

IMO Kids are getting bigger not because of chocolate milk but because they don't run around the neighborhood like they used to. Most of us who grew up in the region remember a time when as soon as you got home you ran around the neighborhood playing tag and kickball until dinner (usually something like meatloaf and potatoes and chocolate milk - ha). On the weekends you weren't seen at home from about 9-5 and ate lunch at whoevers house you were closest to at the time. Or McDonalds. Now kids stay home and play video games because it is such an ordeal to make "play dates" instead of just going over and knocking on the door and asking if someone can come out to play. Its all about safety...big fat bummer atually.

That said, I don't care what the school serves. They can choose whatever they want. It has always been - bring your own lunch if you don't like the menu and as far as I am concerned, it still is.

Man, that is so true! At one time, not sure it's still the rule, but all county workers could eat in school cafeterias. So, many of the mobile workers, like Park Authroity, etc would schedule their days so they'd be near Herndon Elementary because the food that was actually prepared there was soooo good.

The cafeteria managers actually had to order food and follow a basic diet regimen but the quality of the food varied significatnly from school to school. Most schools would have a regular menu, that they repeated every week or so.

Now, they have a central facility that prepares the stuff and delivers it to the schools where it's heated up and served.

Now, here's an idea that was actually tried at Robinson a number of years ago, over lunch prices at Robinson. But, anyway, organize a boycot of school lunches until they bring chocolate milk back! Every parent or as many as possible, pack the kids lunch and don't buy any of the school junk.

At Robinson, the students organized a boycott of the cafeteria food and it really pissed the admin off but there was nothing they could do about it. The principal came on the loudspeaker and admonished the students and told them how much food was wasted, etc, etc, etc. So, students being students, don't you know the boycott continued. Don't know if it had any affect but it was cool.

I totally agree. But it's so much harder now with Xbox, computers, 150 TV channels, and neighbohoods surrounded/isolated by 4 lane deathtraps. There's too many other things that compete for kids' attention or preclude them from getting out an exploring. And trying to fight that would just be...parenting. It's much easier to place blame elsewhere.

I haven't watched TV or had cable for about six years now, and think I'm better for it. Worried about your kid spending too much time with his Xbox? Don't buy him one.

This is probably going to be the most radical thing I've ever said: if your kid isn't getting enough exercise, parents should go out and play sports with them. I know, I know... that involves not only spending time with your kid directly, but being active yourself. But, it's so crazy that it just might work.

Kids need energy - they are growing, and that means that they need a little bit of fat in their diet.

My son just started grade 1 - not only is his lunch at 10:45 in the morning (they go til 3:45 except Mondays), but he gets 15 minutes of recess a day (a DAY!!) and PE only twice a week.

Get the kids off the couch and moving. They will have stronger healthier bodies if they move around, and that means moving around at school too!

I stil remember my dad playing "permanent QB" quite a few times during some 3 on 3 football. Man, parents were crazy back in the day...playing with their kids.

I have often wondered what it would be like if kids had 30 minutes of vigorous activity at school every day. It might really help to reduce ADD, discipline problems, etc, etc.

High school PE is a joke, they do almost nothing physical and they don't have to take it after the 10th grade.

Fuck yeah it would. That's why half of those kids are fidgety - they have energy they have to burn off.

It was not required past 10th grade in the late 80s/early 90s either, but you could take weight training, which I did (the easy A class)

Unsweetened tea tastes like shit. Sweetened tea tastes better. That's why Lipton, Arizona, and McDonald's sell it like that.

I just don't understand why it's taken so long for Northerners to figure out why Southerners put suger in tea. I'm not saying it's good for you, but it certainly tastes good. All the best things taste good while they're killing you.

The OP kid more than likely gets a free school lunch because OP is poor. OP's kid is fat due to the fact OP serves canned food morning and dinner thinking it has nutritional values. Now the school system has stepped in and thinks Holy $hit poor kids need to eat better because they are now morbidly obese and are having high colesterol and blood pressure at such a young age. Now the school system has to intact strict new lunch rules becasue OP is irresponsible when it comes to the well being of their child and now it affects all students becasue they just cant tell OP "hey your kid is overweight and cant drink liquid fat anymore," that would be discrimination. This is my theory- more than likely it is incorrect

The only sweetened tea taste that I like, is when it's home brewed (My friends in Southern VA make it the best). I really don't like the bottled or canned variants, they're way too sweet. When I make it my own, though (Just about every other day), I always keep it unsweetened. I got used to it like that, and plus I like the fact that it quenches your thirst better. Sometimes I'll add some lemon to it, but that's all (I always top it off with some water as well).

Loose-leaf black teas taste better when smoothed-out with a little chunk of rock sugar. No doubt.

Loose-leaf green or white tea, those don't need any sugar.

Stuff sold in bottles- that's not really tea. It's a tea-flavored concoction of chemically flavored additives.

Teas sold in bottles are like soda or Kool-Aid. Manufactured.

LOL, you want us to emulate the southerners now? They add sugar to everything and they're as fat as the day is long. And is there anything more obnoxious than a southern twang? Nope.

I'll stick with doing the opposite of what the south does.

Never! Chocolate Milk was the best!

First they served it in those 1/2 pint cartons
Than they served it in the pouches that was awesome... (i was in grade school)

I don't know how they serve it now but they did have Strawberry milk for a limited time too...

If they want to get kids off that chocolate crap, they should make healthy yogurt type drinks that give them the calcium they need plus other vitamins from REAL fruits in the yogurt. Yum!!

The food service in FCPS is self-supporting - it receives no outside funding; all the money it gets comes from food sales. This has been a successful venture for quite some time - the food service almost always has been "profitable" (I can't remember hearing otherwise in about 10 years); all profits, of course, go back into the not-for-profit service.

Unfortunately for the food service, staying in existence is NOT their only externally-mandated agenda - they're also required to supply "nutritious" food to the students. So they have to do what the never-been-in-a-school-lunchroom management folks back at HQ tell them to do. That includes whatever those same folks decide is or isn't nutritious.

One of their fairly recent decisions has been about cookies. That particular decision caused something like a 50% drop in cookie sales due to the relatively-horrible flavor of the "more nutritious" cookies. Taste, of course, has nothing to do with nutrition so the management folks don't take it into account when they require fat/sugar/whatever changes.

Pretty soon, the food service won't be able to support themselves from sales due to lack of interest by their customers. When that happens, of course, layoffs of personnel will necessarily ensue but won't fix the problem. Since food has to be served the food service will have to become county-supported - tax supported - from YOUR pocket to theirs.

Bet on it.

No chocolate milk? That's just the tip of the iceberg.

Have you ever been to school for the Thanksgiving 'banquet'? You'd think that on a day when lots of parents were invited, they'd be putting on the dog to serve the best food possible. The food they serve is inedible. I'm scared of what comes out on a normal day.

Check out these tasty entrees they serve is the ES:

- Baked Chicken Tenders w/Cinnamon Roll
- Breakfast for Lunch: Mini Pancakes w/Turkey Sausage Patties
- Pork Egg Roll w/Brown Rice
- Stuffed Crust Pepperoni Pizza

Chocolate Milk is the least of their worries.

The lack of chocolate milk in the county schools is not an error.

My youngest's elementary school no longer has it. Pretty stupid actually. Now the kids that buy lunch HAVE to take white milk. Know what most of them do with it? They THROW IT AWAY! Way to go! Great way to improve kid's lunches. Now instead of getting a little milk in by way of chocolate milk, they get none. AND the schools are throwing away gallons and gallons worth of perfectly good milk.

YOu can't get syrup either. Must make those french toast sticks and pancakes really yummy. So clearly that's a bad idea.

Some nutcase parent probably started a push to 'improve' school lunches. Instead we have kids getting less nutrition and learning how to throw away perfectly good food, because they aren't allowed to have anything else to drink and they MUST take a milk when they buy a lunch meal.

Actually quite a few kids do. There are surprising number of kids that need that meal and several more that like the hot meal at school rather than pop tarts or cereal at home. But, they've actually served both items at lunch in the past.

The reason kids throw away the white milk is because it's the funny-tasting shelf-life milk.

My kids like white milk fine, and help themselves to glasses of it at home. They couldn't bring themselves to drink the milk at school, though, unless it was the chocolate variety.

Chocolate milk no longer available? Reminds me of when Whole Foods in Vienna ended the free cookie program. Per the staff, that happened because some busybody SAHMs campaigned for it.

hmm, I tend to believe you are not a parent, but in fact, a student that is upset they can't get chocolate milk anymore at school.

Here's an idea, BRING YOUR LUNCH, and then you can bring your own chocolate milk to your hearts content.

BTW, I think it's stupid there isn't chocolate milk, kids will drink more milk if its chocolate, and getting kids to drink milk seems to be a better thing to me than them throwing away plain milk.

I remember the BBQ rib subs were the best back in the early 90's. We had fried chicken, orange sherbet, and hot dogs too. Each student had a debit card with funds that their parents would put on it. The idiots at the school wouldn't let us take them home and kept them in a giant pouch at the front of the lunch line. The poor kids (mostly the Mexicans from the nearby apartments) would just take other people's cards, so the food services would end up eating the cost when the student brought up the issue.

No, the PTA covered the costs usually.

Now they give the kids a number and they just tell the cashier their number. Same idea, no cards to swipe.
