Kincheloe property in Prince William Co.

Just over the county line, at the end of Lake Occoquan Dr. there's a spectacular piece of undeveloped waterfront property owned by Mary Kincheloe of Clifton. Appears to be maybe an old farm, nothing there except a little run-down cottage or gazebo that's visible from the water, and maybe an old foundation. Anybody know any history behind it?

Why are you so interested in the Kincheloe's business?

Perhaps you're more entertained by all the inanity on FFU, but occasionally it's a source of interesting tidbits on local history, Clifton in particular being a recurring theme; remember all the discussion on Ivakota Farm? I am wondering if this property is a historic home site or something like that, since it's been preserved despite being surrounded by an affluent development. The ownership and assessed value are in the public tax records. It sure would make a nice park site if it were more accessible

I can tell you all about the property at the end of Lake Occoquan Drive. I know because I grew up there. My parents lived there from 1959 until 1973 when the Kincheloe family bought it. The original farm encompassed approximately 300 acres and went all the way to Yates Ford Road. There were no other houses on the road except an old log cabin which is still there but has the logs covered up now. The building you are seeing from the river is the old "wash house" which was connected to the main house. It was a beautiful old house with 9 rooms, a grand staircase, a back staircase, mantels in every room. Lovely. (I have lots of pictures) There was also a large barn (foundation is still there), a dairy barn, corn crib and lots of other buildings. They were all knocked down after the Kincheloes bought it. It was a wonderful place to grow up. Swimming, fishing, horseback riding. There was no other houses on the river then-so we kind of had the place to ourselves. The farm is where the Bull Run river and the Occoquan river converge. The old farm originally belonged to the Bell family (early 1900's) and was partially flooded when the Occoquan dam was built. The property still belongs to Mary Kincheloe (her husband died in 2006) and I believe there is an open space agreement with Prince William County on file. It would make a perfect park-however-Lake Occoquan Drive is a private road the homeowners don't want all of the traffic. I know-because I live on that road myself. The farm is going back to nature now-you would hardly know that people lived there and it was
a very beautiful old farm in those days. One note of caution: if you are going in there by boat and walking around-the old well (over 90 feet deep) is still there near the house site. Watch out for it as the old pump house which covered it is gone now. If you have any further questions-let me know. Wish I could buy it-but it is out of my league. I have to settle for living up the road now.

Thanks for the info Becky. I live on Lake Occoquan too but my side of it ends right into Waterfront Dr., is that property down by Sierra Ct.? I thought all the Kincheloe's property was on the other side of the river in Ffx Co. Love to hear what you know about this area but am reluctant to post any more revealing info here.

I went to high school with kinchloe grandkids and we use to trespass on their property to camp out down near hemlock. Most of the remaining kinchloe holdings are on Clifton side of the river except for the awesome old farm property at the end of lake occoquan. My brother in law lives on lake occoquan and also owns an empty waterfront lot further down the road closer to the old farm property so whenever we are down there I always check out that spot.

Props to the Kinchloes for not selling all of their land to developer over the years or the one decent area left around here would be as shitty as the rest of nova.

I'll ask Will Kinchloe how much his grandma is selling for next time I see him at the pub.

To LOD resident- I too live on the Waterfront Drive side of Lake Occoquan Drive. The farm is on the other side of Lake Occoquan Drive-not the side with
Sierra Court. I have lived in this area my whole life-so I will be glad to
tell you what I know. I don't think the Kincheloes own any other property on
our side of the bridge-but not sure. I would love to see the old farm turned
into a park-but that would put more people on the river and it is nice and
peaceful out there now since the Bull Run Marina was closed to the general
public. (You can pay a fee and get a key for the gate at the marina-it is a
yearly fee) After living at the farm-my family lived on Main Street in Clifton
for 30 years-so I can tell you a few things about that area too. My grandfather was the Town Policeman there in the 1960's before Fairfax County
took it over. It used to be "Mayberry"--lots of stories--------

Clifton never had it's own police force. It's been patrolled by the FCPD since they were formed, and the FCSO before that. I highly doubt the veracity of your story.

Kinche was a great man to have on the radio, but it was hard to send him into town since the Germans would have picked him out right away. Klink and Schultz were no problem, but Major Hochsteader would not be fooled.

I'm glad he found a nice property in NOVA after the war.

Correction: Clifton did not have it's own Police Force-you are correct-however
if you look in the Book "Brigadoon of Clifton" -you will see my grandfather as
the Town Policeman. I have pictures and his badge to prove it. He was a member of the Fairfax County Police-however-he was the designated "Town Sergeant" and handled all of the calls before it became just another part of
the Fairfax County Patrol area. Believe what you want.

Reminds me of the little old lady in great falls who owns over 300 acres along the Potomac river and has not sold out. Until the mid 90's it was the last dairy farm in fairfax county. Its great to see property owner holding out to massive payouts.

Becky: I've been so intrigued by this property ever since we moved into the small gray house on Lake Occoquan Drive/Yates Ford. I would love to see the old photos you have when the buildings were still present.

Great info! I used to play soccer games there in the late 80's! Thought it was so cool that some family let kids come there every sat/sun to play!

Fond memories !
