Now that the Pre-Season is over,,,the New era of Redskin football begins

I'll be REAL positive and predict a 9-7 season,,,but the schedule is brutal,,,

Word. Most of the tough teams on the schedule are at least home games.

I think 7-9 to 9-7 is realistic.

Go Skins!

7-9 barring injuries to key players on other teams.

Cowboys just traded Crayton to San Diego,,,I think we can assume V. Jackson is officially available,,,

The Redskins love giving up draft picks,,,we may have a love connection,,,

I dont think Norv wants to help the Redskins,,,but his opinion may not matter

A defense that doesn't have the talent to support it, leading to even WORSE pass pressure and worse run D, STILL only one decent receiver, aging running backs, and a QB who will play 11 games MAX.

You heard it here first. 5-11.

While I'm not a fan of the 3-4 defense for the Redskins,I do think they will be able to take advantage of certain aspects of it,,,

I think it will bring out the best in L. Landry and D.Hall,,,allowing them the ability to make big plays and cover up their weaknesses,,,the 4-3 the Redskins played left both of them badly exposed too often,,,

I think they will do this by blitzing way more than we saw in the pre-season,,,

Orakpo will be the key,,,and you can have lots of faith in his abilities,,

While a power running team could be a problem, there aren't many on the schedule,,
Minnesota, New York and possibly Dallas are the only ones,,,

As for the running game,,Portis looks damn good and Torain might be better, we don't know yet

The receiver situation could change,,,V. Jackson and Hoos-your-mama are available

And finally the QB's,,,as shocked as I am to say this,,,Grossman looked decent in pre-season,,,not great,, but you might be able to win a few games with him if you have to,,

---9-7,,possible wild-card is probably the best case scenario this season,,,

BUT,,a New Era has clearly begun,,,

I saw nothing in the pre-season that would prompt me to change my 7-9 forecast. In fact, I may be too generous.

7-9 is probably realistic, nobody should be too disapointed if that is the final record,,,however, I do expect them to get better as the season progresses, and to be respectable even in defeat,,,

For arguments sake, heres the 2010 schedule,,,

I'm picking the Redskins to win the World Series, 0 and 100, with a 7 and 10 offensive line. More turnovers on the defensive line should result in more overtime in the tight end on the 5 and 7.

Well, its officially Dallas week,,,

But of course Haynesworth is the center of attention,,,
This guy doesn't want to play, period,,,he just wants to keep his money

I also think Shanahan is trying to frustrate the fans so when he cuts/trades him everyone will be happy about it,,,

Anyway, I'm predicting a 24-17 Redskin victory Sunday night

That could be the Heineken(s) talking,,,,

Wilbon says Dallas is TOTALLY overrated. He may be right.

Nevertheless, I think the Redskins won't score a touchdown and can't stop the Cowboys LBs. So 27-6 Cowboys.

From The Onion...funny...and entirely true...

Washington Redskins

* Strength: Acquisition of 33-year-old Donovan McNabb gives them a solid quarterback for maybe four weeks

* Weakness: Receivers, running backs, offensive line, and defense, but, um, this is the year the Redskins really turn it around

* Player To Watch: Albert Haynesworth, in that uncomfortable car-accident can't-stop-looking way

* Biggest Question: By how big a margin will the Redskins beat the Rams, and how many games will that buy Donovan McNabb before fans want him benched?

The rumors are flying that Haynesworth will be traded to Tenn.

Not exactly great timing for this,,,

Trade probably wont involve a player from Tenn. so I'm not sure how this will help us,,better to play Haynesworth against Dallas

I think his pride will take over playing on national television and he will play his ass off to make Shanahan look bad for messing with him,,,

I still don't think he really wants to play football but getting back at Shanahan
will probably motivate him

You think? We're going to run a 3-4 defense with...what at Nose Tackle? There's a reason the 3-4 isn't run much, and it's because there's about 3 guys in the league who can play NT effectively at the NFL level.

This was a great win for many reasons,,,

First and most importantly,it was against Dallas,,,DOUBLE BONUS POINTS

The Redskins OUTCOACHED the other team,,,haven't seen that in a long time

The Redskins defense looked better than expected with minimal contribution from Fat Albert,,,lots of blitzing which is what I was hoping
DeAngelo Hall looks like a playmaker in this scheme,,,,

Clinton Portis is still a vicious blocker and clearly feels comfortable in this offense,,,

On the downside,,,,the receivers need to catch the fucking ball!

Winning one of the first six games was critical, the Rams are the only cupcake,,,

We'll worry about that next week,,,,tonight we celebrate!

The defense played pretty well for most of the game, that is a positive. McNabb looked immensely more mobile than any QB in recent (or distant) memory, but that was seemingly expected.

I don't think it is worthy of celebrating a win that came mainly at the hand of the opponent having one epic failure after another.

I think it is a time to be thankful simply of not being 0-1 at this point in the season. So, thanks.

A win is a win. But minus the returned fumble, the Skins offense scored a measely six points. They won't win many games with that kind of performance.

Its looking like Cooley, Portis and Moss are still the backbone of the offense. This is nothing new, and it doesn't bode well for a long season of tough games with injury-prone older offensive players (also McNabb) in key positions. Still, I've got hiiiiigh hopes.

I wasn't one of those experts. Wade Philips did his typical Wade Philips coaching job last night. When they did that last play before the half, someone should have gotten on the horn with Romo and said, "You have two options...down field or throw it away. Don't improvise."

Of course, only an idiot would dial up a pass play in that situation.

Re: 2010 Redskins Season

Mike Shanahan's philosophy is throw to score and run to win. The Redskins obviously can't run the ball very well. This goes back to the suspect O-Line and the aged running backs. Also, Doughty can't cover. He is a back-up strong safety. They needed to bring in a true free safety before the start of the season and they didn't do it. Also, the lack of depth in the O-Line bit them when they had to bring Heyer in on a critical passing down.

Overall, though, it was a great game. The Skins were about as flawless as they could have been with some of the personnel they have. But, yes, if they could have eaten up the clock in regulation, this would have been a different story.

I can't believe that they blew a 17 point lead, their Defense sucks ass this year. It's the complete opposite of years past, they they had a Number One ranked Defense, but a horrible Offense. I knew that the failed TD conversions on the first two drives would be their death blow today.

Why can't 'Skins fans (as well as the team itself), just finally accept the fact that the Redskins are a horrible team. They've been perennial bottom feeders for almost twenty years now, but every season the fans get all a-flutter about how THIS is the season of glory that will cement their "well deserved" place in the firmament of the greatest NFL franchises ever known to man. Meanwhile, fans live on nothing but faded memories of a time twenty years ago when the team was relevant.

I guess what I'm saying is that at least horrible teams like the Browns OWN their awfulness. They've accepted the fact that they are a long ways from good and one has to respect their humble, underdog attitude. But the 'Skins begin EVERY season with a shitty "Don't you KNOW who I AM?!?" sort of attitude, as if the fact that they were Super-Bowl champions two decades ago should buy them some sort of cred today. There's no humility. They STILL think that they are "NFL Royalty", just like their fans do. They're like the "Al Bundy" of football teams, a loser trapped in a dead-end life, a guy in his fifties who's STILL reminding you about the time he caught the game-winning touchdown pass at the homecoming game back in Junior year of high-school, and expecting you to pay the same reverence now that was shown to him back then.

If the 'Skins would just ACCEPT their place as one of (if not THE ) WORST teams in the modern NFL (as stats from the last twenty seasons will bear out. They're worse than the Raiders, worse than the Cardinals, worse than EVERYONE), I think they'd be much closer to finally getting their shit together and becoming a winning team.

Not a sermon, just a thought.

dear taylor (previous poster),

your right, it is not a sermon, its just another thought

while you have some relevancy to your words the redskins really havent been god awful in the last decade. They've been mediocre, their win- loss records havent been atrocious(mostly) and they made the playoffs 3 times since the 99 season. Definitely far from satisfactory, but still you make it out worse than it has been

And your whole thing about skins fans acting like we are gonna be the cream of the crop each year... well from my experience in the last few years skins fans have been nothing but realistic... if not pessimistic.

Many people dis the redskins for having such a loyal fan base that sticks by the team even during the darkest of times. A LOT of them are bandwagon shitbags or douche's that dont know what they are talking about.

Nope, I've ALWAYS been supportive of MY team. I'm not a Redskins fan. Never said I was, but living in this area has given me ample opportunity to marvel at the ability of Redskins fans to bury their heads in the sand when it comes to the team. They suck now, they've sucked for the last twenty years, they'll suck for twenty more unless fans and team-members alike gain some humility and the hunger that comes with starting at the bottom of the ladder and fighting to climb higher instead of constantly clinging to old scraps of faded glory from days long past. It's just karma. I'm not a 'Skins hater, just not a fan, but it never ceases to amaze me how many of you all STILL believe that the Redskins are still "something special".

As for my hypothesized "Band Wagon Fan" status, I will continue to support my team. They usually do well, but I feel no urge to crow about it. See, that's the difference between Redskins fans and other fans. When you win a game you're insufferable and you truly believe that you're the greatest team in the NFL, and when you lose, you're STILL insufferable and you STILL believe that the 'Skins rate respect somehow. You don't have to change it, but I think it's one of the biggest things holding you back, and also one of the reasons that the rest of the NFL LOVES to see the 'Skins brought low year after year. Everybody likes to see a bloated ego punctured. You'd think that after a 4-12 season that MAYBE you would have learned some humility, but after narrowly squeaking out a W against Dallas I was once again reading all the same tired old crap about how the 'Skins were dominant again this season and the Super-Bowl was a forgone conclusion. You know, there's a reason that the Redskins are the constant laughing-stock of the NFL. It didn't occur in a vacuum. Think about it. Grow a thicker skin. Learn some humility. Maybe then you'll become great again.

I'm a Redskins fan whether or not they win or lose. It's a plus for the Redskins to win but I base my loyalty as a Redskin fan to just hanging out with other Redskin fans at BBQ and tailgating.

I'm not sure why every Redskins fan's automatic default belief is that "not a Redskins fan" = "Cowboys fan". For the official record, I'm not a Cowboys fan EITHER. I like them less than the 'Skins, but I will certainly admit that the Cowboys have had MUCH more success to brag about in the last twenty years than the Redskins have.

That was actually a good game. Personally, I'm pleased that they lost a heartbreaker. It made up for the game last week that they should have lost.

I have to agree with Taylor a little bit. Most Skins fans are realistic, but there is that annoying contingent that think every year is Superbowl year and that a decade of glory (20+ years ago) entitles them to be in every conversation, despite years of ineptitude. Those are the ones that give the other fans a bad name. My friend is one of those types of guys and every year I want to punch him in the mouth from draft day until the Skins are eliminated from playoff contention. Just talks shit constantly...and when they lose it was because they were robbed/jobbed/injured/whatever.

It's the same reason I hate the Pittsburg Steelers. Back in the 90's I had college friends from that area that talked so much trash about them year after year that it just turned me off to every team that comes from Pittsburg. Never mind the fact that the Steelers hadn't won jack since my friends were in diapers - that fact was lost on them.

See, Warhawk understands where I'm coming from. He even said it better than I did with his simple, folksy, country-spun wisdom. I think that one of the things that I was trying to describe that Warhawk hit right on the head is the fact that 'Skins fans (at least the ones that I encounter), can NEVER just admit that the reason the Redskins lost a game is because they are a horrible, horrible team. It's always "the Ref's fault", or "the NFL has got a personal vendetta against the Redskins because they are too powerful a franchise", or it's "the other team's fault for playing dirty", or "the other team's coaching staff has no class", or "we would have won IF (insert single play here)", or "we got robbed by (insert opposing players name, coaching staff issue, errant gust of wind, pre-existing geological condition, type of grass used on playing field, color of jersey worn for game, etc.)".

Rarely, (if ever), do I hear a 'Skins fan graciously say, "We lost because we are simply a shitty, shitty, awful team and we need to stop acting like we still think we're the best top-tier talent in the NFL and start realizing how low we've fallen in order to finally get over our collective sense of entitlement that is holding us back."

It's the same with players. For 20 years now after yet another loss, I ALWAYS hear players who are being interviewed say "We're BETTER than this! We're a GOOD team. We JUST need to find a way to win!"......................... I want to say, "No you're not. You're an incredibly deluded, sub-par team that has been on a free-fall path to the basement of the NFL for close to two decades now. You have NO RIGHT to call yourself a "good team"." If one of them would simply say "We're a crappy team but we have heart and we're working hard EVERY DAY to become better.", I would have MUCH more respect for the team in general.

Every year I see 'Skins players resting on their laurels, not working their collective asses off during training camp (if they even bother to show up AT ALL), and taking it easy during pre-season games. Then I listen to fans talking about how the season is already a forgone conclusion and any other teams may as well not even show up to play because "the 'Skins have the entire season won on paper"......... There's a reason that the Redskins are called the "Champions of the Off-Season". They brag more than other teams, play worse than other teams, and then their fans constantly complain bitterly about ALL the factors that "conspired to rob them of their well deserved victory" more than other teams.

Every season there's a new coach staring dazedly into the bright lights of the cameras during the after-game presser with a dumbfounded look on his face as if struggling internally to find SOME reason to explain how this loss could have possibly occurred when the team looks SOOOOOO good on paper. I want to scream out "It's NOT because of any mysterious reason other than the fact that you're just a bad team!"

For example, the LATEST 'Skins complaint is that they WOULD have won the 'Skins/Texans game IF only the opposing coach, Gary Kubiak, hadn't "iced" the kicker by calling a time-out. In reading the 'Skins boards I've seen incredible amounts of invective spewed about how "classless" he is, how "cheap, shady, and underhanded" he is, what an "asshole, jackass, bastard, hack" he is, and certainly ALL about how "they WOULD have WON, if only he hadn't pulled his sneaky, bull-shit move" ....................... Hey guys, it's PART of the GAME. It's a legal move that's used by EVERY team in the NFL, and if the 'Skins had WON the game because Shannahan had iced the Texans's kicker, 'Skins fans would be falling all over themselves patting themselves on the back due to their "ingenuity, craftiness, and willingness to do what it takes to get the job done." But when they lose because of another coach's smart play-calling, it's the inevitable flood of pissing and moaning again about how "the WHOLE NFL is against them" and how the "news organizations always malign them unfairly and miss-report things about them".

Have you ever played pool, basketball, touch football, water polo, etc., with "THAT GUY"? You know? The one that bitches CONSTANTLY about every single thing? Nothing is his fault? Either you didn't understand the rules correctly so you "messed him up", or that's not how they play it "where he's from", or the sun was in his eyes, or WHATEVER. At the end of the game he will sullenly refuse to shake hands or be a gracious loser and then go into the locker room and punch a locker while screaming about ALL the unfair things that caused him to lose?................ Well, the Redskins are "that guy".

So to 'Skins players and fans alike, just stop running your mouths (both when you lose AND when you win), show some humility, and (most importantly), concentrate MORE on playing the game well than looking for ANYTHING to blame for the losses OTHER than your own, current ineptitude. If you can do that then I think you'll eventually climb back up into the light again.

Taylor, as a lifetime Redskins fan (yes I remember RFK), I completely agree with you that the Redskins, while showing some positive areas this season, still suck and really have since 92'. One of the Redskins biggest letdowns is their inconsistenticy with the offense and defense. Special teams is also really sucking wind this year already with a blocked field goal and a bad snap. Ninety percent of Redskins fans drink the Kool-Aid every year thinking their gonna go all the way, cause they got McNabb or Shannahan, Trent Williams, etc. These are the same asswipes who get up and drunk dance to every retarded song Fed up Field BLASTS over the loudspeakers. They are still us REALISTIC Redskins fans who don't expect a playoff let alone Superbowl team, but I will remain hopeful and will remain a fan.

To 495, Bums and RRS540, thank you! I appreciate your willingness to listen to my opinion and offer an open dialogue (even if your opinions are different than mine). It's that willingness to consider others viewpoints, or conversely, the refusal to "drink the Kool-Aid" that I WISH that I saw in more fans of the Redskins. Honestly, when I talk to 'Skins fans like you that aren't overbearing or obnoxious, I really want for the 'Skins to do well, if only to honor your particular commitment to them. Hopefully your patience will be rewarded with a season that you can be genuinely happy with.

To "More Complete", see, YOU are EXACTLY what I'm talking about here. Because I offer my personal assessment of what I think is wrong with the team, and how they might be able to fix it and turn it around, you automatically label me a "Hater". It's like ANYONE that doesn't necessarily think that this is yet another year that the 'Skins will win the Super-Bowl must OF COURSE be a "jealous hater who wishes that they could root for a team as solid and sterling as the Redskins". I guess you think that because I don't fawn over the 'Skins and think that they're the best team in the NFL, I'm just another part of the "vast conspiracy" against the only REAL team in the NFL. The 'Skins are so powerful and glorious that ANYONE that doesn't admit it MUST be a "hater" or just insane with envy that their team isn't as good as the burgundy and gold, right?

I PURPOSELY haven't mentioned the team that I root for because I believe that would simply cloud the issue and it's not really relevent to my opinion here. Regardless of which team I follow, my opinions on the Redskins are the same. If I say that I root for "Team X", then it will become nothing but another mudslinging match where you (or other obnoxious fans) will try to say "Oh YEAH!?!?! Well, "Team X" has the WORST running back EVER!" or "Well, back during the (insert year here) season, their season record was only (insert numbers here) so THEY SUCK!!!!"

Your first and ONLY defense against my opinion is to a) attack me personaly as someone that OBVIOUSLY must have a grudge against the Redskins if I can't admit how superior they are, and b) since you can't show numbers proving the 'Skins are better than my "Team X", then you'll have to say that my team is gay, unfairly stacked against you, a bunch of cheaters, the sort of team that only people with "no class" would root for, or some other equally stupid rebuke. I see it ALL THE TIME.

Again, it's like when you beat "THAT GUY" in basketball and his only comeback is "Oh YEAH!?!?! Well, I fucked your girlfriend and I have a nicer car than you, PLUS all my shit is more expensive and YOU'RE just JEALOUS of ME anyway!!!!"

Try to be a better fan like 495, Bums and RRS540 and maybe "the curse" you guys (the obnoxious fans, not ALL Redskins fans), are always blaming everything on might finally be lifted.

The Skins' problem is the organization has a culture of failure when it comes to what happens on the playing field. This trickles down from the ownership. You have seen this is professional sports over the years. At some point during this season, Danny Boy is going to call Shanny into his office and ream his ass over the kind of loss you saw yesterday. He's going to insist on being called "Mr. Snyder" and he is going to question why Kyle Shanahan is the OC. Then, he is going to start going behind Shanny's back...listening to his pet players pet peeves about how the team is run.

It's only a matter of time.

I don't blame Shanny, Allen, Haslett, McNabb, etc. It is Snyder.

Nothing...has...changed.

Allen and Shanahan have their hands tied by Danny Boy.

Players know this and feel emboldened.

Players who should be shown the door, like Portis, are still there.

This is a debacle in the making. Snyder is going to do to Haslett, Allen and Shanny what he has done to every NFL pro who has come through Ashburn.

I think the Skins biggest problem is run-blocking. I'm not sure any RB they use will have much success with that O-Line.

Jerry Jones was sort of the same way as Snyder when he took over, but he eventually learned to shut the fuck up when Jimmy Johnson was running the show. But then Jones' ego took over again, let Johnson go and while the situation isn't as bad as the Skins since the late 90's, the Cowboys still underachieve almost every year. But they have more comparative success than the Skins because Jones has more sensibility than Snyder. Snyder is just the younger, shorter, east coast version of Al Davis. An "Al Davis Lite" if you will.

Eventually, I think the law of averages catches up with the Skins and they will have some success despite Snyder. Maybe even win it all under his ownership. It won't mean he's learned his lesson or is a better owner, it's that even a blind squirrel finds a nut every so often.

Al Davis is a crazy old man now, but he at least knew football. The Raiders teams of the 70s and 80s were always in the playoff mix.

Snyder's problem is he doesn't understand the role of the owner. His job isn't to have Scotch and cigars with players and to talk shit about his coaching staff behind its back. The Skins will never win a SuperBowl with that kind of owner.

As for Jones, apparently he likes Wade as coach becuase Jones gives him a handful of plays to call each game and Wade does it. I wouldn't be surprised if that idiotic pass play with 4 seconds left in the half was a Jones play. I think Jones is a worse owner now than when he took over the team.

I was making the comparison of the current Al Davis. The Al Davis of old knew his stuff. I had no idea that Jones actually gives Phillips plays to call. That's idiotic. It also shows that Phillips has no backbone - probably why Jones likes him. I may have to stand corrected on Jones.

The game is far from over, but when it comes to Haslett's tenure as D-coordinator, you may be seeing the beginning of the end. The Skins are making a rookie QB look like Tom Brady. Then, they give up totally on the run just in time for the Rams to have a running TD. The Skins defense is a total embarrassment.

McNabb is not the problem. I have harped on this for years. It's the shitty o-line. When McNabb had Williams in there, he played like Peyton Manning. When he has Heyer in there, he plays like Jason Campbell.

So the question is, what will be the theme this week on Sports Radio, etc. Will we start hearing about Haslett's job being in jeopardy? That seems like the natural place to start.

It's all dominoes. First a couple of guys will be cut/moved, etc. Then, Haslett will be given notice/let go. Then at the end of the season, Allen will be shown the door.

It's going to get even uglier next season when Danny Boy starts going after Kyle Shanahan's play-calling.

Here is my assessment of what would be considered a very optimistic scenario for the future of the redskin season:

Here is what we know:
1. The rams game confirmed that the redskin defense has serious issues and the offense will be the only way the skins' will have any chance of winning games.
2. In the rams game the redskins still made some nice offensive showings, but they made too many mistakes from penalties, special teams mishaps and some others that couldn't make up for the bad defense.
4. If the redskins can overcome some relatively minor issues on offense and play solid on special teams they will get in a lot of close games.
5. Best case scenario is that the redskins maintain a five hundred record till the near end of the season and play our last few games against teams that have already secured playoff berths and thus wont start their first stringers or against teams that have key players out from injury's.
8. The skins should pray they don't get the injury bug too bad.

and...
6. The redskins could make a 9-7 record and clinch a wild card spot, very best case scenario

Some other things to note that could give skins fans a glimpse of hope:

1. The NFC East has shown signs of weakness aside from the redskins in this infant season, namely the giants and cowboys. The Eagles are looking great though.
2. And I know its early but many of the non-division teams on the redskins schedule have looked beatable so far this year.
3. Also history has shown that the redskins seem to play at the level of their opponents so maybe just because they lost to the rams doesn't mean the skins cant beat good teams. The skins almost beat a good team last weekend.

I hope I am right and don't turn out to be just some painfully hopeful skins fan:)

But I'm probably going to have to accept it at some point.

The Skins were man-handled by the one team on their schedule they were expected to crush. Any thoughts of them in the playoffs is a pipe dream.

As for Portis, there was a reason Shanny pulled him from the game for a while. He looked like a QB sliding to avoid a hit. If he's that worried about being injured, he needs to retire.

The Redskins' only hope for the long term is to do so badly year after year that fans finally get disgusted, stop going to the games, and make Snyder get so tired of dealing with such a poor performing financial endeavor, that he sells the team.

Well, I can dream can't I?

I'm hoping Snyder's other business failures will eventually force him to sell his stake in the team. Everything he touches turns to shit. As for the Skins, on the business side he has been milking the cash cow because they have been the only show in town for the most part. I don't give him much credit for his so-called "marketing genius." Before, he had WJFK paying him a shitload of money to cover Skins games. Now, he has this money-losing Red Zebra endeavor that he came up with. Doesn't sound like good business judgment to me.

Maybe it wasn't all Zorn's fault after all.

He did when he was in college but not in the pros.

He does hold the NFL record for most rushing by a QB in a game, 173 yards.
