i heard gmu was good, but im curious. as much as i like gmu, i don't want to be stuck in nova forever. Im debating either leaving va or sticking to some other college in VA. I'm 50/50 on va tech and most likely not getting into UVA.

Howeve, my main question is which are the best U's in VA for A degree in IT/ masters in IT?

I would say that Va. Tech probably has a better IT program than UVA.

I've always wondered, wtf is IT exactly? What would your degree be BSIT, MSIT, PHD IT? I mean there are the cisco certified, ccna, msce, etc.. dime a dozen..study for a year types of certifications out there.

If you want to get a degree in what I think IT is, then go to ITT Institute or ECPI. They can teach you how to set up windows, install a network switch, set up active directory, LDAP, and exchange server.

If you want to get a worth while technical degree, get an engineering and/or science degree and get it from any of the larger schools in VA. These schools will get you a degree that you can really use.

There are two sides to IT. You described the "down in the weeds" side.

You're joking right? ITT and ECPI are bullshit schools that wouldn't even prepare someone for a job behind a Geek Squad counter. Complete waste of time.

Going to school for IT is a bit of a waste of money in the first place. That is, unless your primary interest is paying for the college experience.

In such a dynamic field, it doesn't make sense to learn material that is several years old (since it has to go through an accreditation process before being taught).

I'd recommend doing some self study and taking an entry-level technician, help desk, or junior admin position to get some experience. Certifications and experience are what the overwhelming majority of employers really care about in this field.

GMU isn't rated in the top 10 for IT in VA and UVA is better at law and literature based subjects.

Va Tech and Old Dominion are the two top VA universities for IT. NOVA actually ranks above Mason. You could save some money by going to NOVA and then getting a guaranteed transfer into a VA university you like.

Go to JMU. My friend got an IT degree from there and he is 29 and making 125K. You can get in with any of the big consulting firms with an IT degree from JMU.

Go to DeVry. If you are asking for education/career guidance here, it's about what you deserve....

IT degree has been around since the early 80's. Most universities offer it in their business college. CS is in the College of Arts & Sciences which require you to take mathematics, hard sciences and basic engineering courses.

about the only thing I know of at Tech that is nearly purely IT is

http://www.admiss.vt.edu/majors/index.php?major=1BIT

And it is a BIT degree.

They hit on some programming and on networking among other things.

Here's the web site: http://www.bit.vt.edu/

it's probably easier than CS, but you would still end up getting your foot into the door for some decent jobs
