Auto Repair Job Estimator

Mechanics used to have books with makes models and job rates. I am trying to find the hours for putting a timing belt on a Chrysler Sebring.

Are these books available online anyone know?

I know what you are talking about but don't know the name. I think they used to sell them on the Snap-On trucks and they weren't cheap. THey probably went the way of the old Hanes Directory that showed phone numbers whe internet came out. Google the shit out of it I'm sure it's there.

IF you call some shops and maybe the dealer, they might tell you how many hours it will take, it will be something like 3.75 hours, they used to list it in increments of a quarter hoour I believe.

In this economy, you should be able find someone to do it for about $300.Plus part.

You Dingus! $300 for a timing belt isn't right. Just to get to the timing belt you need to open up the engine and then after putting it on everything needs to be tuned/adjusted. More like the $1000 range, if not more.

$1,000 is what you might pay at the dealer. I know it's a bitch of a job, especially with the cramped spaces and shit that's probably on a smaller car like a Sebring. I did one (when it was still timing chains) in the 80's and it was a pain in the ass.

My mechanic did a timing belt in a Jeep of mine about 4 years ago when he did my water pump, less than $500 for everything.

$1,000 for a domestic car is lubeless ass rape.

I thought the Sebring was larger? I remember being bummed when they dumped the LeBaron.

http://repairpal.com/ Just enter your make and model, year, zip code of repair shop and it gives you pretty accurate estimates on labor rates and total cost.

Given that it is the timing belt, I am assuming it is about 10 years old. Here is the estimate, according to repairpal.com...

Estimate Includes:

Labor: $328 - $418

Parts:
$61 - $124

I would do a complete job - not just the belt. While you are in there it is time to do the water pump the rollers and tensioner for the timing belt and cam and crank seals. It will save you in the long run as most t-belt failures are not the belt but a tensioner, roller, or water pump failure and theses are not likely to last through 2 belts. I would say $900 to $1100 in this area.

How much should it cost to replace a clutch with original parts for a 2004 Toyota Solara 4cyl at an independent repair shop. Or rather I should ask, how long should the job take? I just had this job done and feel like I was overcharged. I was charged for 13.6 hours labor (seems excessive) @ $85 per hour. I used original dealer parts which was close to $400 and $85 for resurfacing the flywheel. The job cost me over $1500 plus tax for a total of $1670. Was I ripped off?

On ebay its about $150 for the clutch, and the labor at a private shop should be around $400 - $700. So yes, you got ripped off, changing the clutch on your little 4 banger shouldn't cost you that much.

What I do (as crazy as this sounds) is call pep boys. They can usually quote me a pretty accurate price over the phone...and I go from that number.

They're the only shop I know that will really take time on the phone to give you an estimate, all other shops are like "well we have to see it..." but I have had pretty good luck with them (as far as getting numbers, I only trust them for simple stuff like oil changes).

For example, they were charging ~$600 for a clutch job on my 01 jetta using DEALER parts too.... so when I called another shop and they quoted $1500 I KNEW they were overcharging by a mile. I settled on another shop that I paid $850 for (a well-known shop with good reviews online). Just meet in the middle!
