Government-owned corporation Amtrak has announced plans today for the VAT, or the Virginia Area Transport railroad, which will be built atop the historic W&OD railroad trail that runs from Alexandria to Bluemont. It isn't the first time that plans for revamping Northern Virginia's rail system have been introduced.

Amtrak's Director of Operations Mark Hamburg hinted at construction beginning in 2014, 46 years since the closing of the Washington & Old Dominion railroad in 1968. The stated goal of the railroad is not to replace or compete with the D.C. Metro's Silver Line, but to complement it with a long-distance transport alternative.

Construction is said to take far less time than that of the Silver Line due to the well-maintained paved path that already exists in its place.

I wish they would let people drive scooters or mopeds on it. That would be a great commute into north arlington or the city.

They already have trails for those. They're called "roads". Check it out some time. Bike trails are for bicyclists, silly rabbit.
