All Fairfax County Public Schools will close three hours early today, Monday, April 16, due to high winds in order to ensure the safety of students who have classes in trailers and modular buildings at many schools. Elementary schools will close three hours earlier than the usual Tuesday-through-Friday time.



After school and community use activities – such as extracurricular activities, middle school after-school programs, interscholastic contests, team practices, field trips, adult and community education classes, and recreation programs in schools and on school grounds – are NOT canceled, although schools will not have students practice outdoors under these conditions.

There are a vast number of trailers used as classrooms around Fairfax County. If a tree were to fall on one of them the results most likely would be tragic. The trailers do not have the structural integrity of regular brick and mortar classrooms. Given the large amount of rain yesterday and the extremely high winds today, makes this an unusual situations and I do not believe it is an overreaction.

I was at Centreville today hooking up some lights. The principal comes on, say that the power is being cut off at 11:00 am due to trees on the powerlines have to be removed. I went outside, there were 2 trees on union mill rd on the powerlines being cut down. The power had been off there until 7:15 am. Willow springs never had power today.

as mcuh as we'd all love that, no way unless there is a lot of power outages, since the wind is supossed to subside overnight.

When I was a junior at Stone Bridge High School they closed school a day in advance once for the chance of a flood. the funny thing was that it wasn't raining...the sun was shining.

Well heres the thing. Dr. Dominech would closes school in advance but we rarely got off early. Like school was canceled 2 days in advance for Hurricane Isabel.

Now, school is never canceled early but no trouble at all to cancel in the middle of the day and screw up all our schedules with havign to go pick up kids, etc.
