Tiping cabdrivers??

How much should I be tipping a driver for a $30 to $40 fare? Got to take the car to the shop and since the bus don't go to Fairfax Station I'll be using cabs for a few days.

Thanks

You ever hear of rental cars? It's this whole new business model where you actually rent a car for a short period of time. I hear they are catching on.

I also heard, but this is just a rumor, that renting a car is a better value as well.

I usually tell them to keep whatever change amounts to around 15%, and maybe a buck or two extra if they helped with my bags.

Tried renting before, Enterprise is the only one who will pick you up (as far as I know). It took about 2 hours for them to get me, take me to their place and process the paper work and another 45min to drop off and be taken back to the garage, What I need is a car that does not need to go to the shop for extended periods or a new car with one of those "loaner for life" deals.

I will go with approx 15%. Thanks.

you might want to look into zipcar

I have a bunch of friends in DC/Arlington that are too hip and cool to own a car, but they get zipcar, which is basically a convienent rental car. Might be worth a look.

Tiping is unsafe, so is texting.

Yup, that's would I would tip. $6 to $10. More if there are multiple people. If you are calling the same cab company at the same time each day from the same location you may get the same driver.

I usually tip about $4-5 on an $18 dollar cab ride home from the bar. That might be a little high, but I factor in listening to my drunk ass.

You've got to be kidding...$6-10 minimum for a $30-40 fare? $10 on a $40 fare is a 25% tip!

The standard tip is 15%, and you shouldn't feel bad if that's what you tip.

i hook the cabbies up anywhere i go. 15 dollar fare, 10 bucks. they've got a tough job, have to listen to everyones problems, people gabbing on the phone, drunks, junkies, creeps. they are just trying to make a living.

Go to Dulles Airport late at night. They won't see you sneaking up on them. Sneak up behind one of them when they go outside the cab to stretch and smoke a cigarette.

The only cabs allowed to pick people up at Dulles are Washington Flyer cabbies. They're more like a shuttle service, not like real cabbies who can take fares anyplace. Don't take their advice on tipping or any other cab-related questions.

I've had many good experiences renting from Enterprise.
You should give them another try. Sounds like you're near
an over-busy location. Make sure to call a day ahead for a reservation.

Y'all are the reason why this country is sinking. Tipping for a cab ride. Give me a break. The cab driver should be lucky he's getting 30-40 dollar ride. What more tip does he need. You only give tips for people who go out of their way. A cabbie is doing his job nothing extra. Here's an idea. I'll give him a stock tip...

Oh yeah I tip waiters and waitreses. I tip them 20%. Taxi drivers are a different story. 99.9% of them are rude and deserve nothing.
