ATM in Tysons rigged with scamming device
Posted by: Lurker. ()

WTOP reported today that an ATM in Tysons was rigged with a ATM card capture and camera device used to record ATM cards and PINs.

So keep your eye out for strange looking devices on ATMs.

So if anything is the totally wrong color on the machine that's a good clue I guess.

Timing was dumb but then again I can't relate to the criminal mindset.

Here's a tip on how to avoid this problem. First, cover the numbers on your ATM card when you put it into the ATM. If a camera is on the ATM, it won't be able to record your ATM card number. Second, always cover the keypad with one hand when you enter you PIN. That way, even if someone gets your card information they won't be able to get your PIN.

I think this was a drive up ATM.

The device attached looked like a surrogate reader. The card is placed in and the info is read, then transmitted to a short-range device just offsite. Hiding the numbers isn't going to protect against a card reader.

I realize that. However, they have to use a camera aimed at the keyboard to get your PIN. Covering the keypad will keep the camera from capturing your PIN information.

who cares about your pin. If you scan both sides of the card, you have all the info you need to order stuff on the internet (assuming you can find the address and phone number of the victim, which shouldn't be a problem)

Exactly. How many people know the PIN for cash allowances on their own regular credit cards (if they also have a typical bank ATM card or check card, that is)?

The CVC on my ATM card is unreadable. If I didn't remember what it is, I wouldn't be able to order stuff on the internet.

However, on a lot of cards it is readable, and therefore, useable.
